VERACRUZ, Mexico -- Authorities in the Mexican state of Veracruz say the body of a journalist with the national newsmagazine Proceso has been found dead inside her home.

The Veracruz Attorney General's Office has released a statement saying Regina Martinez's body was found in the bathroom of her house in Xalapa, Veracruz, and that authorities believe she was murdered.

The statement said that the journalist's body showed signs of "blows to the head and body" and initial evidence suggested she died of asphyxiation.

Martinez was the Xalapa correspondent for Proceso, one of Mexico's oldest and most respected investigative newsmagazines, and often covered drug trafficking in her stories.

The Attorney General's Office said that Veracruz Gov. Javier Duarte had ordered an investigation into her death. She was found on Saturday

Authorities provided no motive for her killing.

For too long the police, business and political corruption in Mexico was tolerated by the public.

Nothing will change until the people of Mexico stand up and demand a government that provides safety, security and jobs for its people.

It is time for the Mexican people to demand more from their leaders. In the past they have chosen to leave rather than improve their country.

Yes, as if it's so simple as "Mexican leaders". U.S. political and business interests have as much, if not more say in Mexico's situation. Ever heard of NAFTA? Plan Merida?

The people of Mexico have been standing up for quite some time, they have one of the most active and resilient civil societies on the planet. The problem is that Uncle Sam and the cronies they're paying off in the Mexican government continually put the profit motive over the interests of the Mexican people.

"Pobre Mexico, tan lejos de Dios y tan cerca de Los Estados Unidos" (poor Mexico, so far from God, so close to the United States).

Then perhaps you should return and get them sorted out. Please tell them we are bad and do not come to America. I ( for one ) would appreciate that.

You can't deny the influence of easy weapons coming into Mexico from the USA as a factor, but to lay all blame on Uncle Sam is intellectually void of reality to say the least.

For the year 2005, there were 16,692 murders (about 5.6 per 100,000 people) in the United States.
Very clear information at:
http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/tables/totalstab.htm

So in six years, there would be over 100,000 murders in the USA. More than in Mexico.
02:32 PM on 04/29/2012
We should invite these murderers to America. They can just walk in with no questions asked.
02:09 PM on 04/29/2012
They believe she was Murdered? In Mexico? No way! It has to be natural or suicide.
01:49 PM on 04/29/2012
Legalize everything
05:06 PM on 04/29/2012
I am 100% for that.
01:42 PM on 04/29/2012
Let's legalize drugs and allow/encourage our American nighbors south of us to do the same. Prohibition gives power to criminals.
05:04 PM on 04/29/2012
First of all. We need to clean house in Washington. They hold the key to freedom to our nighbors south. I blame Washington for all the killings of innocent people here in the us and south of the border. United States is the #1 buyer of all drugs. They are also #1 in selling waopons to Mexico. The cartel keeps 99% of all drugs sales tax free. War on drugs is no different from the prohibition days. It only make more criminals. If drugs are legalize in the us? Mexico will be free. Also the us. Cartel will take business to else were? War on drugs is just a job security for law inforcement!

Do a little research on the drug usage in Mexico. Since the screws have been tightened on the drugs crossing the border into the U.S., the cartels have picked up the slack by selling more to their own people. Per capita, the drug usage is as bad in Mexico as it is in the states.

I used to travel to Mexico quite regularly as a tourist. I have not been there for six years and won't go there again until the country and its leadership take this problem seriously, becoming a part of the soution, not a part of the problem (as the members of Mexican "law enforcement" (LOL) currently are). When the Mexican government sees a serious dent in tourist dollars, it may grease the wheels of change. (Hear that Cancun Cruizers and Spring-Breakers)! I have been going to other, more responsible Central American countries instead, taking my tourist dollars with me.

And Mexico's. They do a pretty good job of snorting their fair share down there....and shooting up....and lighting up. You didn't really think that the U.S. is the cartels' only customer....did you?
