Victoria Chakwin, High Schooler, Gets Lung Transplant Before Prom

High School Lung Transplant

Victoria Chakwin was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis when she was 11.

At age 17, the high school senior from Martinsburg, W.Va. went into pulmonary failure and her lungs became starved for air, according to WJLA.

Doctors, desperate for something that would keep the disease at bay, hooked Chakwin up to a machine that oxygenates blood and "then pumps it back into the body," the station reports.

According to CBS Baltimore, though the machine bought the doctors time while they looked for new lungs for Chakwin, the machine also made it less likely that the transplant would be successful since, "a patient needs to be put into a mild coma while the machine is connected, the muscles a patient needs to breathe on their own atrophy."

Despite these odds, the transplant was successful and Chakwin is now well enough to attend her prom.

With a new pair of lungs, Chakwin is looking forward to the future, according to TODAY.

“Now I have the whole world ahead of me," she said.

Battling a deadly disease, facing what were very possibly her last days, and she is graduating on time...quite the inspiration I would say.

I have a friend who is a double lung transplant because of pulmonary fibrosis--she's doing very well, and I wish you well, Victoria, as you begin your "second" life. My son is an organ donor--kidneys, liver and heart, just 2 years ago, and tomorrow we will be meeting his heart recipient as part of a celebration of April, Organ Donor Awareness month. Recipients have a second chance and there is such an organization here in Kentucky. You might want to check to see if West VA has one. Ours is called Second Chance @ Life It's a great support group and it's wonderful to be around people who have many of the same issues as you will have as a recipient. Good luck and have a great time at your prom!!

My very best to your fine family Ms. Lyons and to all those your son did so wonderfully help. I wasn’t accepted as an Organ Donor, but my younger son was and we were very happy about that.

Nice to see all the positive comments. Maybe stories like these will help people realize how important it is to be a donor. When you've left this earth, think of your "legacy" continuing and the incredible gift you can give to someone. I promise you, the person receiving the organ and their family thank you more than you can imagine. I know some people think they're too old or not in good enough shape to be a donor. Check the "donor" box on your driver's license anyway. You'd be surprised at what you have that is desperately needed. And wouldn't it be great to have your last "act" on this earth be one of giving life (lives) to others.
