KANO, Nigeria, April 29 (Reuters) - Gunmen killed at least 15 people and wounded many more on Sunday in an attack on a university theatre being used by Christian worshippers in Kano, a northern Nigerian city where hundreds have died in Islamist attacks this year.

Security sources said gunmen arrived on motorbikes and threw small homemade bombs into the theatre before shooting fleeing worshippers. There was sporadic gunfire in other parts of the city later on from attackers driven from the university by the army, the sources said.

"I counted at least 15 dead bodies. I think they were being taken to the Amino Kano teaching hospital," said a witness who did not wish to be identified. He said he saw many more people being treated for injuries.

A security source said at least 15 people were dead and a source at the hospital said by telephone he had seen 10-15 dead bodies brought in with gunshot wounds and dozens more wounded were being treated.

Bayero University spokesman, Mustapha Zahradeen, said two university professors had been killed in the attacks.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi condemned the attacks.

"The latest terror attacks in Nigeria ... during Christian religious celebrations are horrible and despicable acts to be condemned in the strongest possible way," he said in a statement.

He added that people must be encouraged to not fall into the "vicious circle of murderous hatred".

Radical Islamist sect Boko Haram, which wants to carve out an Islamic state in northern Nigeria, has killed hundreds in bomb and gun attacks this year. It mainly targets police and authority figures but has also attacked churches.

The army said it had secured the area.

"The attack took place in one of the lecture theatres used as a place of worship by Christians. For sure there are casualties but I can't say how many," said Ikedichi Iweha, an army spokesman.

"The elements came, used explosives and guns to attack them. We have repelled them and cordoned off the area," Iweha said.

Red Cross officials said they were trying to get access and had no details on casualties.

BOMB EXPLOSIONS

"For over 30 minutes a series of bomb explosions and gun shots took over the old campus, around the academic blocks," said Mohammed Suleiman, a history lecturer at the Bayero University.

"It started at about 9:30 (0830 GMT) this morning ... our school security men had to run for their dear lives. You can see smoke all over," Suleiman said.

Clashes between Boko Haram gunmen and security forces have flared up several times in Kano since the sect killed 186 people in January, its deadliest attack so far.

On Easter Sunday, 36 people were killed when a suspected member of Boko Haram attempted to force a car packed with explosives into a church compound during a service in the northern town of Kaduna.

After being stopped by security he turned back and the bomb exploded near a large group of motorbike taxi riders.

Boko Haram set off a series of bombs across Nigeria on Christmas Day last year, including one at a church outside the capital Abuja that killed at least 37 people.

Africa's most populous nation of more than 160 million is split roughly equally between a largely Christian south and a mostly Muslim north.

Suicide car bombers targeted the offices of Nigerian newspaper This Day in Abuja and in Kaduna last week, killing at least four people in coordinated strikes.

This Day is based in southern Nigeria and is broadly supportive of President Goodluck Jonathan's government - the main target of Boko Haram's insurgency.

Jonathan has been criticised for failing to get a grip on the sect's wave of violence, which has gained momentum since his presidential election victory a year ago.

The president has relied mostly on a heavy-handed military approach to dealing with the violence and an attempt at mediated dialogue with the sect broke off last month after details of negotiations were leaked to the media.

On a visit to the This Day bomb site in Abuja on Saturday Jonathan refused to be drawn on whether talks with Boko Haram were under way but he did not count them out.

"Just like a war situation, you may dialogue, you may not dialogue, depending on the circumstances. But we will exploit every means possible to bring this to an end," Jonathan told reporters. Be strong brothers and sisters. Pray for the fallen and stand tall and strong on God's word, for we know that we would be teased, humiliated, raped, beaten, jailed, exiled, and even murdered for the name of the risen son. I mourn not in grief, but celebrate God's word for if we loose our life here for Jesus, we will receive a gift eternal and nothing like this world. For we all know that even these bodies are temporary and things like money, homes, and even entertainment all end at some time.

God have mercy on those who have lost family and friends who have been taken from this world. And may we stay in your world and meet hate with love.

It's ironic that Boko Haram's primary complaint is that the west is corrupting their values.
I see no evidence of values to corrupt.
They're just fame-seeking terrorists who feel significant when they get themselves into the papers, and they're willing to kill people to do it.

Look at how America was created. While what the colonists and founding fathers did was not widely covered and most of it swept under the rug, never to be revealed. In more foreign places, where they don't have the power of numbers or ignorance of people, and where there is a worldly presence, the powers that be seek to find subtle ways to accomplish the same things they did here elsewhere.

Your comment provoked a lot of thought, but in the end I'm still not sure if you're comparing Boko Haram to our founding fathers or not.
I personally see them vastly differently, as our founders did things like destroy tea, but not bomb churches--where BH is simply trying to establish themselves as a force, and other than saying western teaching is forbidden, they don't really seem to be working towards any specific goal other than terror and fame.

My wife and I have donated many goods to a teacher named Gus from Nigeria. He comes to the states to visit his son and take back any donations to help his people. He is christian. He is in constant fear for his students because of the aggression of the Islamic thuggery. I'm atheist, but if I had to side with who's right and who's wrong in Nigeria's case, i'm siding with Gus.

Oh I get it this is part of the Divine Plan . . . You're basically killing each other to see who's got the better imaginary friend

The only position that leaves me with no cognitive dissonance is atheism. It is not a creed. Death is certain, replacing both the siren-song of Paradise and the dread of Hell. Life on this earth, with all its mystery and beauty and pain, is then to be lived far more intensely: we stumble and get up, we are sad, confident, insecure, feel loneliness and joy and love. There is nothing more; but I want nothing more.”

What happened to my post responding to the miss information of someone here blaming Christians for the crusade " when it was about self defence, i dont know why a post like that wouldn't be allowed here, unless someone doesn't like to hear the christian side and only wants anti Christian propaganda to be posted here.

Self defense? It was fought in the Holy land....Europeans armies went there to fight...Doesn't sound much like self defense to me if you go into someone else's home and attack them....
04:05 PM on 05/01/2012
Only after the Muslims invaded their holy land where Christians lived for 600 years, until the invading Arabs came, so yes self defence, think of it like this what would happen if an army invaded mecca ? would not Muslims fight to get it back ? of course,

It amazes me how little people in the west know, they think they know, but most westerners have been indoctinated instead of educated by radical secularist.

Your comment if I have a very violent side...one thing you learn when thousands of innocent people are murdered in your own home town, when you see the incredible savagery, is that you cannot reason with lunatics.

Matthew 5:10-12 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven" . These are Jesus word, where Christians in relationship with Jesus share in his suffering and promises.

Lovely. None of which happened in Nigeria. They were killed because of lunacy justified by twisted religious beliefs that few on either side wish to end apparently.....This" my God is mightier than your God" drivel has got to stop or expect to eventually become a victim of it ...

I think that American evangelists are to blame for a considerable deal of this violence. Wherever they spread their heresy(not Christianity in true sense of the term) religious conflicts flare up, and not necessarily between peoples of two different religious beliefs. In some African nations evangelical propagandists managed to create extremism and hatred on mass level. One only has to look at Uganda to get the true sense of the magnitude of the problems that they have created. This extremism can be found on both social and government levels. I am by no means an advocate of separate rights for homosexuals, but to make it an crime deserving death or lengthy prison sentences seems to be going overboard. Even many European nations and various "human rights" NGOs protested what several prominent American evangelicals have done in the said country. There are plenty Youtube videos where homosexuals are openly attacked on the streets and sometimes set on fire. Not surprisingly, some of those attacks are at times pinned on Muslims(radical or otherwise), which in my opinion is absurd. If these countries want to avoid this sort of violence and intolerance, the governments need to close their boarders to American missionaries.

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace

Judging from these comments, a lot of supposedly tolerant folks think murder is ok, as long as the victims are Christians.

The war of religions. Christians killed muslims in the crusades and jews in the pogroms and now muslims kill christians. An important part of most religions seems to be to kill people belonging to other religions. And this will continue as most religions have monopoly on the truth, and everyone else therefore must be wrong and hence, their practitioners a fair game.
05:55 AM on 05/02/2012
Gosh I love people who use the crusades as an example of Christianity fighting Islam (sarcasm). If you actually did research you would realize the crusades were brought on by a whole number of reasons. Such as power hungry leaders seeking more land for their growing states, aiding needy kings from smaller states within the regions, etc. If you actually read the bible, you would realize Jesus's teachings never teach on killings or violence, but the power of scripture, and the love and power of Christ. If you actually opened your eyes, you would see all the miracles still being performed in many countries around the world. Miracles such as healing men and women born with blindness, just by speaking the name of Christ! Stop saying what everyone else is saying, and actually read the bible for yourself, do research, and look of the original meaning in Hebrew and Greek, and you will see the truth.
