Cheri Young, Andrew Young's Wife, Testifies In John Edwards Trial

Cheri Young

MICHAEL BIESECKER   04/30/12 10:31 PM ET  AP

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The wife of an ex-aide to John Edwards broke down on the witness stand Monday as she recounted how the candidate asked the couple to hide an affair he was having and justified using wealthy donors' money to do it.

Testifying at Edwards' campaign corruption trial, Cheri Young said she huddled around a phone in her Chapel Hill home during December 2007 with her husband, Andrew Young, and Edwards' pregnant mistress, Rielle Hunter.

On the call, Edwards emphasized the need to preserve his campaign and keep the affair from his cancer-stricken wife, Elizabeth, Cheri Young said. It was a couple weeks before the 2008 Iowa caucuses, and two suspicious tabloid reporters had already tracked Hunter from a doctor's appointment to the Youngs' home.

Edwards made the plan sound "as if it was for the good of the country," Cheri Young said.

Asked by a prosecutor why she went along with it, Young put her hands together, pressed them to her chin and bowed her head as if in prayer. As she began to weep, U.S. District Court Judge Catherine C. Eagles dismissed the jury to give her time to compose herself.

About 25 feet away, Edwards sat back in his chair and put two fingers to his pursed lips. As Young dabbed her tears with a tissue, the former U.S. senator glanced at his watch.

Once the jury returned, Young answered the question.

"I felt like everything had been dumped in my lap," she said. "Everybody was on board but me. ... I didn't want the campaign to explode and for it to be my fault. I ultimately decided to live with a lie."

During the call, Edwards suggested that it would only be a one-day story if Andrew Young took responsibility for the baby.

"'Nobody cares about two staffers having an affair,'" Young recalled Edwards saying.

Hunter had earlier been paid as a videographer by one of the organizations linked with Edwards, who is accused of deliberately using money from two wealthy donors to hide Hunter as he sought the White House.

Edwards has pleaded not guilty to six counts related to campaign-finance violations. He faces up to 30 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines if convicted on all counts.

At issue are payments from a wealthy Texas lawyer, Fred Baron, who served as Edwards' campaign-finance chairman and an elderly heiress, Rachel "Bunny" Mellon. Andrew Young, who testified last week under an immunity agreement, has acknowledged that he kept about $1 million in payments from the two campaign supporters.

Earlier in her testimony, Cheri Young said she had doubts about taking the "Bunny money" and using it to cover up the affair. She said Edwards hatched the plan to have her deposit the money into an account controlled by her and her husband. Concerned about violating the federal $2,300 limit on individual campaign contributions, Young said she reluctantly agreed after insisting on hearing Edwards himself say the scheme was legal.

"I heard Mr. John Edwards tell me on the phone that he checked with the campaign lawyers and that this was legal," she said.

Cheri Young took the witness stand late Friday after a full week of testimony by her husband, a former fundraiser and close aide to Edwards.

Though Andrew Young testified last week that the couple spent much of the money provided by the donors to build his family's $1.5 million home, the couple also supported the pregnant mistress out of their checking account, paying for her medical care, a BMW, a $2,700-a-month rental house and a monthly allowance of thousands of dollars in cash.

Cheri Young said she agreed to handle the money because if the public found out about Edwards' affair with Hunter, the campaign and her husband's job were in danger.

"I cannot tell you how disgusted I was. Why me? This was my husband's fight," she said. "Now I had to fix it."

After reporters for the National Enquirer tracked Hunter down in December 2007 and the Youngs agreed for Andrew to issue a public statement accepting paternity, they embarked with the pregnant mistress on a cross-country odyssey of private jets and luxury retreats, all paid for by Baron.

Eventually they settled into a $20,000-a-month rental mansion Baron paid for in Santa Barbara, Calif. Cheri Young said Hunter chose the location because that was where her "healer and spiritual advisor" lived.

Cheri Young said Hunter also had her write checks totaling thousands of dollars to the New Age healer, Bob McGovern, whom the mistress said she wanted to be with her when she gave birth.

There was also tension between the Youngs' family and Hunter.

"We were not allowed to touch the baby," Cheri Young testified. "My kids were not allowed anywhere they might breathe on the baby."

Edwards had also stopped returning Andrew's calls, prompting the Youngs to fly to Texas to meet Baron at his home. They met with Baron and his wife, Lisa Blue.

Cheri Young said she told Baron she wanted to go home, but he told them they could never return to North Carolina or live close to the politician. Baron's wife, a lawyer and psychologist, had recently visited the Edwardses and she advised them to steer clear of Elizabeth, who was angry with the Youngs over their role in her husband's affair.

"'Mrs. Edwards is not well," Young recounted Blue as saying. "'I'm a doctor and she is not mentally healthy. There is a very good chance she would be a harm to you and your family.'"

Blue is expected to testify later in the trial. Baron died of cancer in October 2008.

After a mid-afternoon break, a lawyer for Cheri Young told the judge she was suffering from a migraine. The judge dismissed the jury early, telling them Young was expected to retake the stand Tuesday.

After Young completes her testimony, the next witness called by prosecutors could be Josh Brumberger, a young aide who was with Edwards on the night in 2006 when Hunter walked up to the candidate in the bar of a New York hotel and introduced herself. Brumberger was later pushed aside by Edwards after he tried to dissuade his boss from continuing with the affair.

I cant get over how many people make judgements based on things that arent facts. No charges were filed in any way related to tax fraud. This is mostly about somebody being railroaded because they had an affair. Has anybody stopped and wondered if this was about campaign finance laws that were broken, why isnt the person that donated the $ on trial or charged with anything? That would be Bunny Mellon. Yes she is 101. The answer is because she didnt break any laws because the $ in question was given as a gift and not a political donation and taxes were paid by Bunny on this gift. And Edwards chose to use this gift to keep his mistress under wraps. An overly ambitious prosecutor brought charges and is now running for edwards former senate seat from NC. The government is prosecuting a useless case trying to make the argument that a gift to a presidential candidate, made out to individuals, exceeding by 100s of thousands of $s the max campaign contribution, was a political contribution instead of a gift because supposedly using the $ to keep the mistress out of site benefited the candidate, even tho, filed with the IRs was the proper gift tax form with taxes paid by the giver on said $ in question. I just hake my head at this craziness.

McCain's staffers felt badly about promoting Palin after the campaign. Edward's staffers covered up his sleazy behavior. When do people just stand up and say, "No" to these guys? Does anyone out there have a code of personal ethics? Mitt Romney certainly doesn't when it comes to his own greed and ambition. Edwards' behavior was so egregious that I wonder about John Kerry's judgement.

I don't have any sympathy for the Youngs or Edwards in this. They took money, lied about paternity and were part of the cover up. They have milked this for all it's worth.

I make no excuse for Edwards or the Youngs. They all did some questionable and illegal things and they will have to face the music. The shining light in this tawdry business was Elizabeth Edwards, her biography is an amazing story of strength, courage and love. I recommend it to all.

Hopefully the immunity the Youngs' got doesn't cover any IRS crimes - like not reporting their ill-gotten gains that they used for build their mansion. The IRS used tax evasion to get Capone, hopefully they can do the same here.

Shame on Andrew Young for dragging his wife into this mess and expecting her to support his lies (which she did). Would I want to support my husband to the extent that I'd allow him to claim that he fathered a baby???????????????? NO WAY JOSE!! How stupid and 'loyal' and dishonest am I supposed to be Actually, now that I think a little more about its........she's lying thru her teeth.

This is the most disgusting story about Edwards I've heard/read. I can't wrap my head around an attitude like his. Is it: I'm good looking and rich so I can get away with anything and don[t dare question me?? Or is it: My country, my wife and my children are not as important as my self-indulgence. You are a sick puppy that makes this country and our government look bad, bad!

fascinating story of evil in the justification of the myth of the ability of Edwards to become a profoundly positive public figure and force.... his actions exceeded even Newt's by virtue of his use of money, whether ultimately judged illegal or not....

But the aide and his wife configure a fascinating subtext to all of this, given that they built the "dream house" on the strength of maintaining, at great emotional cost, this lie of innocent brilliance that Edwards pitched to his public, quite successfully for a time. One can only suspect that the money was an angry retort for the pain and anguish they experienced, the unknown destinations, the presence of Hunter herself, and the living of a lie with every breath..... but, two wrongs don't make a right....

So, what do we have left?
-a pol whose public image is toast
- an aide who will never be an aide to any political figure again, and who by now, has already shaken the money tree twice, once for the house, the second with his tell most of it book. And a marriage based on the knowledge that they know each other can lie....
-a mistress with a kid... will it be a book or a movie, given her vidiography history. Will she be her own producer and star?

They are all disgusting. I feel bad for the children caught up in this. Frances, who was disowned and lied to for as long as Edwards could get away with it and the Youngs' children whose parents were willing to lie about paternity.

There is nothing illegal in having a mistress or for that matter a harem. Marriage to more than one is considered a crime in U.S. although apparently not in Mexico, and certainly not in Muslim Countries. A presidential campaign is expensive we know, But for a high roller the expense of a secrete lover is high, a pregnant one too much. The humane effort of wealthy Fred and late heiress Bunny of a cash infusion was a lifeline at a time of crisis. The basis for the crime was not the use of the money It was the stupidity of not thinking of a dying wife or that a gloating public would not know.

I wonder what "Bunny's" state of mind was when Edwards was fleecing her. This guy would take candy from a baby if he could benefit from it.

John Edwards is yet another fine example of a democratic politician. He couldn't even carry his own home state for crying out loud. That's because we saw right through him and we knew how he is. Too bad all of you didn't see that Obama was a phony.

VA JILL.......frankly it is not about the party....Dem's or GOP....this is a character issue of the candidate. Once a cheater, always a cheater and liar. Look at Newt, how many marriages has he been through? 3.....look at Clinton and his antics in the White House with Monica L. John Edwards....his wife was so sick and look at what he did. And than you have a person like Jimmy Carter who adored his wife....no, he was not the best President, but he is a man of character and morals. Some guys just can't keep it in their pants. I believe it is all about their ego and POWER. Look at the stories of JFK. So whether they are Dem's or GOP'ers it does not matter. That is why I vote for the person and not the party....R. Reagan was a classy guy, a great President, I voted for him. The Bush clan, I never voted for them. They are horrible!

Young used 1,000,000 of 1,200.,000 for himself? And he got immunity? S omewhere, somehow, there is something terribly wrong with this scenario and with EVERYONE involved. All we're hearing here is pots calling kettles black.

I hope they throw the book at the self-absorbed AH. The news of his affair was going to go public sometime yet he kept running for President. If it happened during the campaign, he would have given the Presidency to the Republicans. He wanted to be president so bad he was willing to commit crimes and when found out, given the presidency to his opponent. He had no caring for the nation, just for himself. Pathetic.

I agree with you about Edwards being a rat, but that is not an excuse for a sham trial and grandstanding prosecuters. It's all a waste of time and money, just so a few government lawyers can get some publicity.

They spent a fortune on themselves out of the money and bought themseves a big fancy home. I think they should be on trial too.

Agree - and they have been milking this for all they can.
02:39 PM on 04/30/2012
Wow, isn't Andrew Young a lawyer? Correct me if I'm wrong but these two people, Andrew and his wife, were not capable of thinking and researching for themselves? I don't buy that for one minute. I think they both added to the Edwards deception because they were dazzled with potential power and future fame. Why aren't they being charged right along with Edwards?
02:51 PM on 04/30/2012
I agree. If she thought it was all legal, why is she so upset? Living a lie? Really? She wasn't crying on her way to the bank back then now was she? I think she went along with it for the money and fame. A million is a lot of dough, even for these slime balls. Edwards acts like a louse and a weasel. Any guy who would betray a very sick, dedicated woman....just plain self-centered, selfish, egotistical, and weak. I'm so glad he never became anything other than a loser. I hope he learns from this, but, by the way this trial is going, it sounds like he's just slipping further and further into denial and it probably won't be long before we hear about YET ANOTHER betrayal. I wish they would save us the details and just go right to a movie. And these people are PARENTS no less!!!

If he had somehow managed to succeed in becoming the party nominee for president or vice-president, Edwards risked bringing the Democratic Party down. Thankfully he failed.

His failure in his marriage however, is nobodies business.
