The phrase "Like mother, like daughter" holds special meaning to Turkish jewelry designers Aysegul and Sebahat Cetinkaya. For them it's more than just an old expression -- it's a way of business.
Working from Bolu, Turkey, the mother-daughter duo spends painstaking hours hand-weaving bright fibers and beads together into elaborate, one-of-a-kind pieces of crocheted jewelry, available for sale at their Etsy shop, Irregular Expressions.
It's an intricate art Aysegul says she picked up from her mother, who continues to inspire her with her beautifully embellished creations. "The things she's done, the pieces, her work, it really surprises me," she says.
Since opening their shop in 2007, the two have worked together every step of the way from picking out colorful bundles of yarn to collaborating on the design of individual pieces. But despite their close relationship, keeping the business running isn't always easy. The time consuming work has become harder for Sebahat, who is beginning to struggle with poor eyesight.
Still, Aysegul says she's happy to help her mother continue to do the craft she loves. "She has the courage to try new things in her age," Aysegul says. "It gives me courage also."
