Bear Rescued From Tree With Bouncy House (VIDEO)

Black Bear
When a black bear climbed a tree in a central Arkansas city and refused to come down, authorities turned to unconventional rescue tools: bouncy houses. Conway Police spokeswoman La Tresha Woodruff says Foster the Bear is named for the residential street where he holed himself up in a tree, straddled a branch and wouldn't budge.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — When a black bear climbed a tree in a central Arkansas city and refused to come down, authorities turned to unconventional rescue tools: bouncy houses.

Foster the Bear – named for the residential street where he holed up in a tree – wouldn't budge from his branch Monday. So, authorities turned to a local hardware store owner who rents inflatable houses and castles for children's birthday parties.

They asked him to set up two of the bouncy contraptions beneath the tree. Then, wildlife officials shot the bear with tranquilizer darts.

"He would slide to one side, and we're like, `Oh, oh, oh, he's going to come down, he's going to come down,' " Conway police spokeswoman La Tresha Woodruff said. "And then he'd balance himself again."

Foster finally passed out, but he still didn't come down from his perch. Eventually, firefighters turned a hose on him until he tumbled down onto the edge of the inflatables below.

The bear, about a year old, wasn't hurt, though he did land in between a blow-up castle and the other inflatable house – kind of "like if you get something stuck between the wall and the bed," as Woodruff put it.

Spectators who had been watching the bear in the tree for hours cheered and clapped, Woodruff said.

"Foster was fine, just knocked out," she said.

Wildlife officials plan to release the bear somewhere in the Ozark Mountains.

Police said the bear's big-city adventure in Conway, about 30 miles north of Little Rock, started before he moseyed up the tree on Foster Drive. Someone had spotted the bear in a different tree on a nearby street before dawn Monday.

"Somehow, he crawled down out of the tree without them seeing him and got away," Woodruff said.

Then, he managed to climb into another tree and inspire a Twitter feed, where someone posted updates – from the bear's perspective – into the night.

"You ever have that dream where you're falling and then you wake up with a dart in your butt?" one post read.

Another tweet summed up the bear's day out.

"The cops want to shoot me," one post read. "Fire dept says I'm too big for their cat getter-downer and 75 townies are below cheering my name."

I have SO MUCH RESPECT for the conservation/wildlife officers in the USA. They do their jobs properly and SAVE animals instead of killing them like they do here in Canada. Case in point - a magnificent grizzly bear named Homer in Squamish, B.C. was shot to death by a conservation officer instead of saving and re-locating him. As it is the grizzlies in Canada are an endangered species. But that doesn't seem to be a concern here which is truly horrifying! We just seem to kill anything that "gets in our way".

The media in this town need to educate their residents to not leave bird feeders outside at night and to make sure garbage is in secure containers or kept in the garage. If the residents don't learn anything from this incident, it will just continue to happen. Stop attracting the bears & they won't stick around.

Actually, this is a very rare thing in Arkansas. There just aren't that many bears.

(My folks live not too far from Conway)

Ok, let me get this right. Instead of trying to find out from the bear why he was refusing to climb down the tree, they decided to shoot first with tranquilizer darts and ask questions later?

Black bears are typically the masters of tree climbing. I've seen a cub get stuck in a tree but an adult bear? Just weird. At least it got down alright.

more lighting would have been nice. the fire/police probably never heard of spotlighhts before lol. it's good that he is going to be released somewhere else. i like that idea

Wow! Here's an idea! Have everyone put away their trash cans, bring in their bird feeders, and leave the bear alone? I get bears in the yard all the time and if they have no food, they move on. And aren't dangerous, as long as they don't have a cub with them. Since this was a yearling, no problem. Guess the cops and firefighters were bored.

Exactly. Keep your distance and be loud if you run too close to a bear. And dont run. They like chasing...

Exactly the technique I used to get my ex mother in law out of the house. The bear had lessbody hair and was less smelly, though.

I would have just gotten out my Husky chainsaw, 36" blade and took the tree down. That would have solved the problem and given some of the home owners firewood for the extreme winters they have in Ark.

Mmmmhhhh......yup...why-sure, you bet-'cha.
