BRAD: UC Berkeley's 'Ridiculously Automated' Dorm Room

Posted: 05/ 1/2012 11:32 am Updated: 05/ 1/2012 1:29 pm

Brad

Ever wanted a "ridiculously automated" dorm room with mechanical curtains? You are in luck.

Derek Low, a freshman at UC Berkeley, has tricked out his room in an epic fashion. His abode, which he nicknamed BRAD (short for Berkeley Ridiculously Automated Dorm) has automatic curtains, light sensors and music befitted for every time of day or emotional experience possible. When his room is on "romantic mode," for example, music plays and the lights dim. On "party mode," loud music blares and there is a light show!

Check out BRAD in the video below.

Now who are you jiving with that cosmik debris?

Needs to install quieter motors for opening the curtains. Excellent light show while in party mode. Certainly was high tech.

What? Are you saying that UC Berkely was wrong in accepting this obviously intelligent young man? Or that he shouldn't have any free time to be able to do this? You never know. He might be designing housing for quadriplegics in the future. I think it's a GREAT job!

Oh, HA! Good catch. I type to fast. But it could still apply, LOL.

Wow... The negative comments about the this kids ingenuity are amazing. People saying things like "what's the point"? Seriously? The young man apparently was displaying his technological skills, probably something that a lot of the people posting negative comments know nothing about. When he's making millions of dollars a year and you're still posting comments on HuffPo news articles, he's probably going to sit back and look at you folk and say "what's the point"....

I could have used one of those when I was at Berkeley. After a day of hurling pipe-bombs at half-tracks, it would have been really nice to have a technologically-inviting place to unwind.

This kid is going to make money hand over fist when he becomes a smart-house residential interior architect. This video is his resume.

He could end up designing housing for quadriplegics!

Good for UC, but dorms are very expensive to live in; some people have to borrow loans just to live in dorms. I would rather live off-campus than on-campus. College is not about living in luxury, it's about getting an education.

He IS getting an education. He's a very bright student. If he can do it, good for him!

Tell that to a quadriplegic who wants to live alone. It IS a BFD to them! Maybe this guy will end up designing housing that allows them to live independantly in the future! If all you care about is money, this could save a lot of money, instead of warehousing them in nusing homes or assisted living centers in the future! Think about it!

maybe if he invented something. He just set up his room with already existing technology.

Looking out his window, the top floor of the opposite dorm was where my daughter stayed her first year at Berkeley. I understand her constant complaints better now. NERDS, they're everywhere at Berkeley. Too much time playing with computers, lights electric motors and disco balls, and too little time interacting with people!!

I agree. He needs to engage party mode and make some friends.

A daughter college age and you're engaging in name calling? You may have a point, forget books and studying, let's all just use school as a way to go out and party with friends all the time!

I'm not name calling... I was using her word! She graduated with a 3.8 gpa.. and Berkeley is very academically oriented. Just getting accepted is an accomplishment. The student body as a whole, is very serious about their education and very competitive. They wouldn't even be accepted unless they were in the top 5% of their high school class. Less than a year ago I was walking around the campus actually saw a student with a pocket protector, pretty definitive!

I've seldom been on the Berkeley campus when there's not some form of protest going on. This kid should have a link in his dorm room to a camera that looks over Sproul Plaza and alerts him when a protest develops and to the type of sign he should bring.

This technology could be used to help the disabled live on their own in the future. THAT would be a GREAT purpose!
