Carl Ericsson To Plead Guilty To Killing Norman Johnson Over High School Grudge

MADISON, S.D. -- A 73-year-old South Dakota man accused of fatally shooting his long-ago classmate will plead guilty but mentally ill to a second-degree murder charge, his attorney said Tuesday.

Carl Ericsson has been charged in the Jan. 31 killing of retired Madison High School teacher and track coach Norman Johnson. Johnson was shot twice in the face after answering his door. Johnson's wife, Barbara, found him lying on the floor and saw a man walking to a dark sedan parked outside.

An arrest affidavit suggests the incident might have been sparked by a decades-old grudge stemming back to when Johnson and Ericsson were students at Madison High. No new details emerged during Tuesday's court hearing.

Ericsson, bearded and with gray hair, sat in the courtroom wearing gray and white prison scrubs and headphones to amplify the judge's and lawyers' microphones.

He pleaded not guilty to a first-degree murder charge in February and requested a jury trial. That charge can carry the death penalty if prosecutors choose to pursue it. The second-degree murder charge to which Ericsson is to plead guilty carries a mandatory punishment of life in prison.

A defendant can be sentenced to the state penitentiary under South Dakota's "guilty but mentally ill" law. Treatment for the mental illness can be given in prison, or the inmate can be transferred to other facilities under the jurisdiction of the Department of Social Services for treatment and then returned to the penitentiary to complete his or her sentence.

Defense attorney Scott Bratland said during the hearing that Ericsson has been examined by a psychiatrist but an affidavit has not been finalized. He was not available for comment afterward.

Lake County State's Attorney Kenneth Meyer was asked after the hearing whether the plea agreement was acceptable to Johnson's widow, Barbara.

"I can't speak for her," he said. "I can tell you we talked to her."

Meyer also said he could not comment on a motive or evidence while the case is pending.

Ericsson's brother, Madison resident Dick Ericsson, said in an affidavit filed shortly after the shooting that his brother suffers from depression and alcoholism and the two last talked about six months earlier. He said his brother was a sports manager at Madison High years ago and "there was an incident where Norm Johnson did something to Carl," and he held a grudge.

Barbara Johnson and her two daughters sat in the front rows on the prosecution side of the courtroom during the hearing. They declined to comment afterward.

Ericsson is scheduled to be arraigned May 15.

this guy probably never liked the guy he murdered from day one and he's using his depression as an excuse..people depressed shoot themselves not other people and being an alcoholic plus depression he would have and should have shot himself...depression does not cause a depressed alcoholic to shoot other people only themselves...there is more to this story than meets the eye..i'd classify this 73 yr old man as a sociapath or pyschopath..if anything and he is using the grudge thing for his killing this innocent man..hoping it helps with his defense if possible

This sort of reminds me of Slaughterhouse-Five.

About thirty years ago, an elderly man walked into the North Beach substation in San Francisco. He spoke only Sicilian. After a while, the police located an officer who spoke Sicilian. He was startled to discover that the man wanted to confess to a murder that he had just committed. It turned out the the murderer and the victim both came from the same village in Sicily. As a young man, the murderer had fallen in love with a woman, who was "stolen" by the victim. The victim and the woman married and emigrated to the US. The old man had followed and waited more than 50 years until the woman died. He then went to her home and killed her husband. He had waited so long because he had not wanted to upset her by killing her husband while she was alive.

He must have done something that was really bad for this man to hold a grudge for so long. From that day on, his life must of been really complicated. Everyday he must have thought about killing this man. Out of curiosity, what took him so long???

At 73 years old, what's the difference?  May as well have gone to a jury trial and hope to win.  Life in prison, death penalty, both pretty much the same thing for someone that old.  By the time the trial is over and the appeal process is exhausted, the average wait time on death row is 12 years.  This guy would have been 85 by then.

Reminds me of the scene in the movie Billy Madison where he calls the kid he bullied in high schools to apologize. The kid, now a grown man, crosses him off his list of people to kill.

Any reason to murder is ok in the USA, often there is no reason at all...

Not sure what your comment means. If it was "ok" he wouldn't be arrested.

We had an incident similar to that some years ago. An elder man was charged with child molestation. It wasn't until near the end of the trial, that the truth came out. It was the sheriff who filed false charges against him, for marrying "HIS" childhood sweetheart. They found that the sheriff had a crush on this girl in school, but she was dating the other guy. After school they got married and started a family. And the sheriff carried a grudge against him for all these years. The sheriff was even charged with tampering with the brakes on the elder man's son's car. Which led to an accident, causing the son's death. The sheriff finally got out of prison after twenty years, but, after sixty years, the county to this day is still divided over that case.

SEE!!!! Some of the people posting here don't get it. You never know what will make someone snap. I see people like that everyday. I talk to random strangers...a LOT. I see people going after people for some perceived wrong and the "culprit" 99.99999999% of the time has no clue about it. I'll bet, throughout the years of the elderly man's marriage, the sheriff was cordial and somewhat friendly towards him. You never know what will make someone snap and they will go after their target. He accused him of child molestation!!! Are you in Utah?

I can relate to this guy and his grudge - I'm still angry at the nurse who assisted with my birth because of video that shows she spanked me.

Some times someone may violate a person . The violation may be so extreme one just don't know how to handle it at first . Then anger and hate set in for what was done to the violated one . Even years later , the violation can be as vivid as it just happened hours ago , 50 year's means nothing . I would imagine the guy who got killed must have done something pretty nasty to this guy for it to go this far .

you are kidding, right? how can anyone hold a grudge that long?
you're blaming the victim? the violation only remains vivid if you let it consume your life

Believe it or not, Dom is right. I know a man right now. 27 years after his divorce is STIll trying to find his ex-wife and screw her life up. You know there are all kinds of trees with funny nuts in this big old world. He's not blaming the victim, but you really need to pause and think about this one. The victim, did something SO horrific that it traumatized a man to the point he held on to it for probably decades. Dom is just stating a fact.
