William Joseph And Michael Bennett, Former NFL Players, Arrested For Tax Fraud

Michael Bennett and William Joseph, two former National League Football players, were arrested by the FBI on Monday and are being charged with identity theft and tax-related fraud, the Miami Herald reports.

The two arrests were part of a larger crackdown on a group of people filing fake tax returns in order to steal victims' tax refunds.

Bennett was a running back drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2001. Joseph was originally drafted as a defensive tackle by the New York Giants in 2003 and played for the Oakland Raiders between 2008 and 2010. Louis Gachelin, who was briefly on the New England Patriots' roster, was also arrested in connection with the scheme.

Taxpayer identity theft is a growing problem.

In 2011, the IRS halted 262,000 fake returns and $1.4 billion in refunds because of identity theft -- a large increase from the 50,000 falsified returns the IRS saw in 2010.

Not only does tax-related identity theft steal money from the federal government and cause undo frustration for those scammed, it also delayed refunds for legitimate taxpayers.

The Miami Herald points out that stealing someone's tax refund is a relatively simple feat, due to lax security and oversight on behalf of the IRS:

The IRS does not actually match tax returns to the W-2 income forms that employers file until months after the filing season ends on April 15... That’s way too late to catch identity thieves who file false returns in others’ names early in the year.

All that's needed to steal a tax return is the victim's name and social security number, along with a new address and bank account. Oftentimes a scam is not discovered until the victim tries to legitimately file a tax return and is told that a return has already been filed in his or her name.

The Identity Theft and Tax Fraud Prevention Act, introduced by Sens. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), seeks to curb tax fraud by making it a felony that carries up to five years in prison. The law would also help fund tax fraud prevention initiatives.

They should have hired Mitt Romney's tax lawyers and accountants. They would have probably been able to pay at the Romney tax rate of 14.9%.

Hey doofus, you obviously didn't read the story. As far as Romney's taxes go, he pays more in taxes every year than most of us pay in our entire lives.

I just love the way the Vikings keep making the headlines - even the old timers are getting all the wrong press. In MN Joe Senser's wife is being tried for homicide hit/run. Maybe it is better if they leave.

I am sure Republicans will be opposed to the identity theft legislation. After all, it targets stealing from the government, which is something they do not consider should be a crime.

Your comment is way out of line. We are not talking about politics or politicians here. We are talking about NFL football players. What do Republicans have to do with them in any particular way that Democrats do not. Stealing from the government is in a ball field that few our likely to succeed in doing. Enough about politics. I think here we are talking about NFL football players committing tax fraud. Seems to me that you put your two cents worth in no matter what the subject. Off of your political crate box. Study the facts and figures making sure that you know what you are talking about before you open your mouth. Do Republicans do things that the Democrats do not. When you blame the Republicans for stealing money from the government as though they have acted in the same way as two football players in the NFL, folks are prone to knock you down a notch. When this begins to happen, folks do not bother to start reading what you have to say. Trust that. Leave politics out of anything that is not pertaining to politics except, of course, the fact that because the Formula One race car drivers have formed a tightly bonded union. I am sure the Democrats will not support this union because it targets the spectators of the sport in regard to how much more money they will have to spend to be allowed into the race car facilities.

They should hire a few lobbyist like the bankers do when they get caught stealing. That would fix this problem.

That's why they call it the National Felon League.

1)Do the crime do the time. IRS probably has a tax force that specializes
on athletes and entertainers.

2) When is the last time you saw a positive about an athelete, at this website.

3)College athletes are not allowed to make a dime. They can't even get part time job.
Meanwhile the NCAA makes billions and some coaches make millions. That restriction
should be lifted.

The Professional life of the average NFL player is only 4 years.
So without some serious financial planning, it's not hard to see why some ex athletes get
into financial trouble. Still no good excuse for the crime.

Sounds like the same excuse the athletes would use.

I hear some people owe less than $1,000 and they end up in debtor's prison. But athletes and movie stars (like Pamela Anderson) owe almost a million and it's ok.

That's the problem with the American economy - it's ok for the rich to be deadbeats but not the poor.

These college athletes had at their disposal a free four year degree of there choosing. They could have picked any degree. If they choose the NFL over school then that is there issue.

If the average NFL earning years are 4 years then not getting the best degree for the future was really dumb on their part.

All non athletes, even the cheerleaders can make money during their college years. But not the athlete. You can't even lend him your car for the weekend. Some schools have preset courses for athletes. A friend of mind was playing starting quarterback for a college, but wanted to major in electrical engineering. They told him no. He left went to a different college and got his degree. We only see the game, but think how many hours a week big name college athletes spend to prepare for the game.

What is stopping them from going back to school? If I were offered a 4 year job worth millions, I would take it and finish school later. Problem is, they were not qualified to go to college in the first place.

It reallyis disgraceful. NFL first and second round draft choices earn over a million dollars a year, and can do endorsements on top of that (even if it is for local car dealerships or furniture stores), but they have to make a big splash wherever they go, have a paid entourage, throw around money. Everyone thisks HE is the exception and will have the money never stop and EVERY one is wrong. They ware all rich now they are all broke, all because they are irresponsible and no one will enforce some form of restraint and long term planning.

NFL stands for Not For Long!!!! I really have no sympathy.
