Osama Bin Laden's Death Anniversary Prompts Security Alert At LAX (VIDEO)

LAX and other Southern California airports are on high alert today because of the one-year anniversary of the death of Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.

American and European authorities told ABC News that Al Qaeda may soon try to surgically implant explosives into terrorists' bodies, but for now, intelligence agencies haven't received any credible information that would lead them to believe a terrorist attack is imminent.

FBI and the Department of Homeland Security also sent out alerts to local law enforcement agencies like the Los Angeles Police Department about the significant date, reports CBS2/KCAL9.

LAPD Cmdr. Blake Chow confirmed to CBS2/KCAL9 that police have received no credible information about an attack planned for Tuesday, but authorities remain vigilant.

"We’re paying more attention tomorrow [Tuesday] to that type of chatter and some of the intelligence that’s coming out," said Cmdr. Chow in a CBS2/KCAL9 video report. "We and the intelligence community will have our ears very close to the ground."

LAX is juggling heightened security measures amidst an airport worker walkoff protest for May Day. Over 1,000 protesters are expected in a march that will shut down Century Boulevard in both directions, and travelers going to and from LAX are advised to plan for possible schedule delays. When Bin Laden was killed one year ago, Los Angeles authorities were on high alert around potential terrorist targets like LAX and the metro system, as well as potential hate crime targets like mosques and synagogues. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck assigned more police patrols near the Staple Center, at that time hosting the Lakers' playoff games, and LA County Sheriff Lee Baca urged Angelenos to report suspicious behaviors or objects.

A blue ribbon commission released an LAX airport safety report November 2011 confirming that while LAX has "improved significantly" in security since before the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the facility will remain a significant terrorist target. As the world's biggest origin and destination airport and the sixth busiest on the globe, LAX has sustained more "incidents" than any other airport in the United States.
