Tony Award Nominations 2012: Surprises, Snubs And The Totally Expected (UPDATED)

The Tony Nominations Are In

The 2012 Tony Award nominations were announced this morning by Kristin Chenoweth and Jim Parsons, with the musicals leading the pack. "Once" -- adapted from the popular indie film -- came out on top with 11 nominations, The Gershwins' "Porgy and Bess" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It," both also musicals, trailed close behind with 10 a piece, and "Follies" and "Newsies" took a respectable eight each.

"Peter and the Starcatcher" picked up nine nominations, the most for a play, edging out this year's closest thing to a favorite, Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman," which gained seven. Philip Seymour Hoffman predictably earned a nod for his turn as Willy Loman in "Salesman," alongside fellow big names James Earl Jones ("The Best Man") and John Lithgow ("The Columnist"). Ricky Martin's divisive portrayal of Che in "Evita" got no love. "Evita," however, did snatch three nods, including one for best revival of a musical.

Over in the actress category, heavyhitters Linda Lavin and Stockard Channing gained nods for their leading roles in "The Lyons" and "Wit," respectively, as did Cynthia Nixon for "Wit," while relative newcomer Nina Arianda picked up one for her talked-about role in "Venus in Fur." This year's buzziest new star, Jeremy Jordan, was also nominated for his leading role in "Newsies," one of two plays he starred in this year, while Andrew Garfield -- our future big screen "Spider-Man" -- picked up one as well for featured actor in a play.

The controversial Broadway take on "Spider-Man" was mostly ignored, as was director Julie Taymor -- the $75 million show gained only two nominations for best scenic design and costume.

The Tony Awards will be broadcast live on June 10 from the Beacon Theater, with Neil Patrick Harris as the host for the third time.
