'Benjamin Button' Brothers Said To Have 'Age-Reversing' Disease: What Do Experts Say? (SLIDESHOW)

They're being called the "Benjamin Button" brothers--a reference to "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," the 2008 movie in which Brad Pitt plays a man who ages in reverse.

Matthew Clark, 39, of Lincoln, England and his brother Michael Clark, 42, last year were reportedly given a vague diagnosis of terminal leukodystrophy. The brothers' particular version of the disorder caused them to lose the ability to think and behave as adults, The Telegraph reported.

After a phase of throwing temper tantrums and watching cartoons, the brothers have gradually lost the ability to talk and walk, leaving them crawling around their parents' home, the U.K. tabloid Mirror reported.

“It’s a devastating disease," the men's father, Anthony Clark, told The Telegraph. "Both of them are very childlike now.”

Neither paper indicated which form of leukodystrophy the men have--there are about 40 known types of the largely genetic brain cell-damaging disorder--or who diagnosed the brothers.

Is it really possible for adults to revert to a childlike state? Experts in the U.S. told The Huffington Post that it is--though it occurs very rarely.

"'Leukodystrophy' is a term used for progressive disorders that causes damage or deterioration to the white matter of the brain," Dr. Robert Marion, chief of genetics and developmental medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, told The Huffington Post.

Dr. Marion, who said he had no specific knowledge of the brothers, added that the disorder they reportedly have is hereditary and that the mental deterioration happens gradually.

There are infantile, juvenile and adult forms of leukodystrophy. As for cases that apparently arise in adulthood, Dr. Marion said, "It’s possible that nobody has really noticed it [until] its gotten so bad that it's reached this level of detection. They reach adulthood or later adolescence and they’ve attained everything they could, then start having neurological symptoms. They can have dementia, they start losing their memory or their ability to function...they’ll lose their ability to walk, wind up wheelchair-bound."

Dr. David Wenger of Jefferson Medical College in Pennsylvania, has diagnosed many leukodystrophy patients. He told The Huffington Post that a number of diseases could cause a deterioration of mental capability--for example, Krabbe disease, and even multiple sclerosis.

"You have to be really careful," Dr. Wenger said about diagnosing neurological diseases. "These are tough disorders to treat."

So that is what has happened to the Republican party, a mass outbreak of Leucodystrophy!
It's Epidemic!

That's mature. Let's take an incurable genetic disorder and make fun of Republicans with it. I'm extremely liberal and I find this is very poor taste.

YAY good for you extreme liberal. I am a liberal (not extreme mind you) and find it humorous, relax buddy. Bellla could have said the same thing about the democratic party and i'd still chuckle.

Capitol Hill is plagued with terminal leukodystrophy. You see these grown men on CSPAN or other news media bickering like 12 year olds, uncivil and nothing gets done.

We are so quick to diagnos without degrees...It is very sad and tragic, probabloy more for the parents, and the boys just do what is coming naturally. There are so many brain illnesses and prognosis, that we could never be well informed without studying. Anything that puts the brain in reverse is sad, becauce as we grow we learn,,,and with this obviousloy, what is learned is forgotten. People have many different brain injuries, where therapy can help them function from ocusive strokes from blood clots, or hemorrhagic strokes from brain bleeds...different types of therapy is given depending on the damage. Things like this are not easy to explain in simple forms so people do the best they can to get the message across.

God's Blessings to this family and all those we don't hear about that suffer. Life is changed.

I believe for every illness there is a cure and for every problem there is a solution sometimes we try to hard to get answers. If it is bad we blame Satan and if we have goodness we give God the glory there is more to it than that and when we start really expanding our thoughts we will find more of the solutions, cures and answers.
02:32 AM on 05/04/2012
Naw! The universe is a dark, cold indifferent place that only exist because I am here. There is no reason, and nothing really matters, ultimately. ;)

Furthermore, solutions, cures and answer serve only to perpetuate our demise, do we really want them?

We are creating our own demise ignoring all the warnings. Yes I want the aforementioned three things. The universe appears quite bright to me.

yes lets stop trying "to hard" to get answers

My cousin has 4 children and 2 of them have been diagnosed with this disease. Another one is a carrier & the 4th is free of the genetic disorder. The 1st was diagnosed at 12 when she went from A's to failing in school & suddenly developed behavioral issues in class. When I heard she was actually ill & not being rebellious, I was so sad. I obviously would have prefered just plain old being naughty...

"Is it really possible for adults to revert to a childlike state? Experts in the U.S. told The Huffington Post that it is." ...YES! It's called LIBERALISM! Where perfectly able bodied/able-minded adults grow increasingly dependent on government! And it IS a disease!

One of the tragedies in this story is the media's willingness to deliberately misunderstand in favor of exploiting the commercial possibilities. These unfortunate men have a disease that destroys specific cognitive functions, and progressively devours brain cells. If becoming neurologically demented is a more sensational story when associated with childhood, then someone in the media is going to immediately connect the two, regardless how tenuous the thread.
12:20 AM on 05/04/2012
This headline is practically a lie, not to mention misleading. All adults who get neurological diseases lose ability to walk, talk, and remember. This is not some "age-reversal" disease.

Please, stop with the purposefully misleading titles!

Really? This is a sad article and you revert to attempting to slam the GOP?

Chew on this... I was only going to post that this was a very unfortunate situation, and it was upsetting to see the mother looking quite sad assisting in holding up her childlike-adult sons. (I cannot imagine what she has been through)

You however, took the road of using a very rare and very sad disease, to take a shot at the political party you oppose.

You are just pouring with compassion. I guess this family serves you no gain. They live in another country, and have no money for you tax.
