Joe Biden Celebrates Cinco De Mayo Early

Posted: Updated:

Vice President Joe Biden is celebrating Cinco De Mayo a little early.

Biden and his wife held a breakfast at their D.C. residence at One Observatory Circle Wednesday morning. About 40 people were there, including Mexican-American leaders, the Mexican ambassador to the U.S., Labor Secretary Hilda Solis and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

According to a pool report, Biden said that it was "Dos de Mayo," but added "any excuse to celebrate with you."

Biden wanted to make a toast at the end of the event, and grabbed a glass of water to do so (he doesn't drink). But then he said it was "bad luck" for the Irish to toast.

"So I'm not going to do that," he said, adding that he could hear his grandfather saying, "Don't do it Joey."

But he went ahead anyway.

"To friendship, to Mexico and to America, Happy Cinco de Mayo," he said.

Biden continued, poking fun at Mexican Ambassador to the U.S. Arturo Sarukhan. "We have the ambassador now serving drinks?" he said to laughs, grabbing the tray Sarukhan was holding. "He's an all purpose ambassador, I tell you."

The vice president is known for his humor. At a fundraiser on Friday, he told an audience that they looked "dull as hell" to laughs.
