During an episode of PTI on Wednesday afternoon, Mike Wilbon connected Seau's apparent suicide to the suicide of former Bears player Dave Duerson:

My second thought -- and I'm sorry if some people think this is a leap but this is my second thought -- it goes to Dave Duerson taking his own life. Dave Duerson, the former Chicago Bear, who suspected he was suffering from the head trauma that leads to CTE and that was later shown through examination of his body after his death to actually have happened. Junior Seau, Tony, you have to be suspicious that he thought the same thing. Junior Seau [has] been involved in a lot of things, from "Man Of The Year" in the NFL in the 1990s, early 1990s, to some very bizarre, uncharacteristic behavior later in his life that led him and others to think, "What is going on here."

McCoy indicated that a woman who identified herself as Seau's girlfriend placed a call to 911 at 9:45 a.m. PT. The caller informed the dispatcher that she found Seau in a bedroom with a gunshot wound to his chest. McCoy indicated that handgun had been recovered near Seau's body

The Associated Press has reported that Seau's girlfriend discovered his body with a gunshot wound to the chest.

If this gunshot wound is proven to be self-inflicted as is suspected, Seau's decision to shoot himself in the chest while committing suicide will be reminiscent of the death of former Chicago Bears player Dave Duerson 2011.

Duerson's fatal wound enabled scientists to study his brain to determine the damage that his NFL career had caused.

Junior Seau's mother spoke to the media outside of his home, per NESN. NESN noted that some of her statement contradicted the reports of a suicide, reportedly asking why someone would take her son.

Per the blog RumorFix, Seau's mother told the press, “I’m shocked … I appreciate everybody — show your love to my son! Thank you, I appreciate you guys show your love to my son. I don’t understand who would do this to my son. I pray to God — ‘Take me not my son,’ but it’s too late.”
