Kentucky Derby 2012: Name A Future Filly Champion

Rachel Alexandra became the first filly to win the Preakness Stakes since 1924.

Much to the dismay of HuffPost Women, we've learned that there are no fillies among the 138 horses running in the 137th Kentuck Derby's Run for the Roses at Louisville's Churchill Downs this Saturday. Regret (1915), Genuine Risk (1980), and Winning Colors (1988), the only three fillies to win the race, are possibly rolling over in their graves. Rachel Alexandra, who in 2009 became the first filly to win the Preakness Stakes since 1924, is perhaps at this very moment in her retirement stable, gazing at a framed copy of her August 2009 Vogue profile (and accompanying portrait by photographer Steven Klein), wondering whether she made any difference at all.

But all is not lost. With any luck, there will be another filly champion soon, hopefully several.

To usher in those future female champions, let's brainstorm some names, shall we? If you could own a horse, and know that she would be the future derby champ, what would you name her? (Note: No fair copying names from the lineup for Friday's all-fillies race at Kentucky Oaks). Tweet her name @HuffPostWomen using the hashtags #runlikeagirl #derby. We'll include your responses in the slideshow below.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story indicated that a female jockey and two female trainers would be participating in the 2012 Kentucky Derby. No women are riding or training this year.
