TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Officials say a soldier has fatally shot himself while standing guard at the front gate of Taiwan's presidential office building in downtown Taipei.

The Defense Ministry said the 22-year-old soldier, surnamed Kao, shot himself in the chest before dawn Thursday. It said fellow guards witnessed the incident but were not able to intervene.

Officials said President Ma Ying-jeou was not at the office building at the time of the incident. Local media said the military was seeking to close any security loopholes.

The Defense Ministry said that Kao was known to have broken up with his girlfriend recently and that his supervisors had tried to ease his distress.

This is the 2nd "shot-in-the-chest" suicide story in two days. I hope the trend has ended!

Must have had his mind on Obama's next secret service party. Didn't know Obama was headed to Taiwan. Oh I forgot Hillary is in China. Maybe this guy thought Bill was stopping off on his way back to the States.

Wow, that was the lamest attempt at funny I've read all year. 4-year-olds telling knock-knock jokes are so much funnier.

He's just got real pissed because the U,S,Presidents guards get to get some from time to time. All he gets to do is constantly watch his president. It's just not fair, sorry buddy!

So sad. I wonder why he chose to do it while standing guard. Most have felt he's life was over and only 22 yrs old so much more life to be lived. May God rest his soul

He chose to do it on guard because that is where he knew he would be given bullets.

A poor joke on the current texting while driving, or driving while texting phenomenon. Doesn't fly.

It has occurred to me that some might misconstrue "poor soul" as condemning Kao. I truly believe. He was in great distress and my heart goes out to him and his family.
