Virtual Humans In The Wild Wild West (VIDEO)

Posted: 05/03/2012 7:48 am Updated: 05/04/2012 2:42 pm

Have you ever had a conversation with a computer that wasn't one-sided? Virtual humans are the newest attempt to cross the uncanny valley and present individuals with computer-generated, interactive characters that can empathize, understand, and exhibit emotions. Artificial intelligence has come a long way, and research at the University of Southern California's Institute for Creative Technologies is pushing the limits of what's possible in modern computer science.

I sat down with William Swartout, the Institute's Director of Technology, to discuss the future of virtual human interaction. He also let me play in their virtual saloon, where I got into a gunfight that was just a little too real.

I agree with the comments about losing the lip ring. Sinned39 is so right. But that said, I think this type of display would be great for parks. You could interact with characters from history. Ask them questions about their day, political views, etc.

Cara, please lose the lip ring - you are so pretty without it!

She's hot but has to lose that lip ring!

Lip rings are really hip...if you're living in the early '90s. What else can you expect from the minds of HuffPo?

Amazing.

Next thing you'll know, Bronies will use this to interact with My Little Pony characters.

"Saloon Shootout Goes Viral"

In what sense is this viral? Is author using the phrase purely because she thinks it sounds neat?

Didn't they realize a wild west theme would be a little tacky, because of "Westworld"?

Interesting. I wonder if in the future this will go far enough to become something like our holodeck.

Well that explains the resurrection and the road to Emmaus!

Interesting. By the way, does anyone else find it awkward that some answer a question by starting with "so" ? Just askin'.
02:00 PM on 05/08/2012
Each of them began their first few sentences with the preposition 'so.' They subsequently used that word several more times - several times it was used correctly; other times, it was not. ...quite distracting!

Can you say Westworld? For you "kids" out there who don't know what I'm talking about, "Westworld" was a early 70s Sci-Fi movie about an amusement park for the rich ($1000/day) that a company name Delous built that was populated by AI style robots that interacted with the guests very much like Cara interacted with the virtual humans in her video. Take this new AI programming and transfer to sophisticated robots and you have "Westworld" for real. Unfortunately for the human guests at ficticious Westworld, there was a glitch in the programming and the robots started shooting back accurately, killing the "real" people. But that surely couldn't happen today... now could it?!! We are the masters of our technology and don't make those kind of mistakes. By the way, one of the scientists in Westworld mentions that they don't fully understant how all their machines are programmed because some of the programming was done by other computers. Sound familiar?
