Colorado Bear Killed After Falling From Tree

REMA RAHMAN   05/04/12 01:51 PM ET  AP

DENVER — A bear that became famous after it was tranquilized and fell from a tree at the University of Colorado died when it was hit by two cars after returning to town, likely looking for food.

A photograph captured an image of the 280-pound black bear in midair, its arms and legs spread, after it was tranquilized April 26. It was relocated 50 miles away to the mountains and was struck on U.S. Highway 36 – which connects Denver to Boulder – around dawn Thursday.

The spot where the bear was killed was a little more than 2 miles from the university's campus. Both cars were towed from the scene and one driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, the Colorado State Patrol said.

Wildlife officials believe the unusually warm and dry climate in Colorado has left limited sources of natural food for bears, prompting them to wander into town.

"We are absolutely concerned if it continues to be dry we're going to see more bears," Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill said.

Churchill said there is a high rate of bears returning to the Boulder area in particular because of the lack of natural food sources.

When bears find food in an area, they adapt to that environment thinking it's a home range, even when there are people nearby. They often return, especially if there are no other male bears around they have to fight for food, water and space, Churchill said.

The bear was identified by a tag placed on him after he was tranquilized. Officials track bears that are captured after coming close to people. Bears that are considered a nuisance – meaning they become habituated to certain areas that create a public safety issue for people – are sometimes euthanized.

On Monday, a bear wandering around a suburban Denver neighborhood was also tranquilized and returned to the wild. A bear that appeared unwilling to leave the city of Craig in northwestern Colorado was euthanized Sunday.

Churchill stressed that people need to keep their trash secured and remove other food sources, such as bird feeders, from their yards.

"We really need everyone to do what they can to remove those attractants," she said. "It really means the life of a bear."

Wow how sad.

After not being able to marry his sweetheart Yogi, the bear illegally smokes a doobie to dull the emotional pain and thanks to a case of the munchies, he wonders into on coming traffic looking for food.

Still think drugs are cool?

Bears and all kinds of wild animals and birds are confused and disoriented with all the developments and destruction of their habitats that is going on. for the longest time, there was a massive Arabian spiny-tailed lizard, locally known as Al Dhub, that used to hang out in the burrows of the rocks of the hill next to our area. It was shy and cute, and it never hurt anyone. It would just be seen basking in the sun, sunbathing, at different times of the day. Until one day I saw it killed on the road. It was a residential area, the driver could have slowed down! but of course not, god forbid he/she paid attention to anything on the road. Probably texting away as most drivers here. Poor thing had no chance...I buried it near its burrow....never seen another al dhub since then..this was 5 years ago. Wild animals have no place anymore. We can't blame the few that wander about for acting out or returning to an area that was once their home, like this bear..

he came BACK????? why would he travel 50 miles to hunt thru garbage cans and bird feeders? is it that much easier then scrounging in the wild? He would have most likely had to be euthanized. Next time relocate the bear 200 miles.....Bears are aggressive and dangerous. This guy seems to have staked out his territory. He would have been a nuisance and a threat to humans and pets...

That really broke my heart! I don't think we do enough for the bears in our communities here in Colorado. People need to try harder to keep things that lure them out of reach and maybe we put a few extra dollars towards relocating them

Remember that guy last year that shot a bear in it's den? Awful, just awful and inhuman behavior.

It's VERY human behavior. Far as I know, humans are the only ones that do stuff like that.

But I get your point.

Yes, it is very human but I don't know anyone who would do such a thing so it seems inhuman. I thought about inhumane but it's worse than that.

Well, humans are the only ones to use a gun. But non-human animals can be very mean as well. When a male lion takes over a pride (usually by killing the current male(s), it kills all the young in the pride. Not quite for sport, but it's not for food either, and not what we would consider nice, civilized behavior.

This is a terrible tragedy when bears have to be tranquilized and then they have to suffer its after effects as they fall from trees because they are drowsy. To make matters worse they are hit by speeding cars. These animals have to bear the cost of climate change brought about mostly by anthropogenic causes. It is the responsibility of both the state and the federal governments to make sure that wildlife in America are fully protected from natural climate changes, droughts, floods and other natural disasters. They must be fully protected also from hunters. A certain amount of tax payers' dollars must be diverted towards the environment and wildlife protection. The Obama government has done nothing to this end. I believe the Republican government under the profit-seeking businessman named Romney, if he gets elected, will do even less for the protection of the environment and the wildlife. If a person like Romney gets to occupy the White House, I dare say that the chances of American wilderness and wildlife being protected will be greatly reduced. Romney doesn't care for these things. He will only care to safeguard the opportunities for big business corporations including Big Oil and Big Coal, the ranchers and the farmers and the fracking companies to amass huge profits. He will be running this country like a huge business corporation. It will be a very sad day for the nation then if such a man gets elected.

That IS bad but when in bear country I guess it's a possibility. I hope the driver is ok.
