Mariano Rivera ACL Injury: Yankees Closer Tears Knee Ligament Before Game Against Royals (VIDEO)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Mariano Rivera tore a ligament in his right knee before the New York Yankees lost 4-3 to the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night.

The 42-year-old right-hander was carted off the field after twisting his right knee shagging fly balls during batting practice.

Manager Joe Girardi revealed the severity of the injury after the game. Royals team doctor Vincent Key diagnosed a torn ACL after looking at the MRI.

"This is bad, there's no question about it," Girardi. "

Mike Moustakas matched a career high with three RBIs and made a defensive gem in the ninth for Kansas City Royals, backing a strong start by Danny Duffy (2-2). Jonathan Broxton was helped by two stellar defensive plays to finish for the save.

Baseball's career saves leader was tracking down a ball hit by Jayson Nix in deep center field when his right knee appeared to buckle a step before the wall. He fell to the warning track and immediately grabbed his right knee, briefly covering his face with his glove and grimacing in pain.

Bullpen coach Mike Harkey was near Rivera when he went down, and he was the first to whistle for help. Girardi was watching batting practice from behind home plate and started running down, cutting across the outfield to get to his closer.

Near home plate, teammate Alex Rodriguez could be seen saying, "Oh, my God. Oh, my God."

Harkey and Girardi helped to carry Rivera to the cart, gently setting him into the back with his knee propped up. The cart rounded the warning track before disappearing up a tunnel.

Sad way to end his career (assuming he doesn't come back). An all time great. Definitely the greatest closer to ever play the game.

He announced that he will pitch in 2013. As a Yankee fan, I hope he has a great year and gets the final out of the 2013 World Series.

My Red Sox 2004 ALCS Championship shirt is one of my prized possessions, but this makes me ill. Mo is an unbelievable leader, and one of the classiest Yankees of all time.

Very interesting and a testiment to the man that the majority of posts I see so far are from those who freely admit they are not Yankee fans...myself included...and yet feel so badly & wish him a complete recovery. I sense we all hope this doesn't mean the end of his marvelous & honorable career.

I truly hate the Yankees (Angel fan here) but I love Mariano Rivera. I hate how good he's been against the Angels throughout his career, but how can you not love the guy? I would take him on my team any day.

He isn't out yet. It's likely a career ending injury, but none of us really knows how things will work out, so speculation is useless.

The question that many pose is:
Would a great player approaching retirement rather quietly retire or go out due to injury?

It's really up to Rivera to answer that question for himself. It's going to be an agonizing issue for him, but he can take some comfort in the fact that his reputation as the greatest closer of all time is in no danger of being eclipsed any time soon.

He stands as a giant in the history of his chosen profession. He is also an athlete who made his reputation in the old Yankee Stadium (arguably the most memorable of venues) and the new. He is immortal. Everyone salutes him!

I only love the Rays and any team that beats the Yankees, but I have to admit that it's sad to see such a dominant thrower go down simply shagging fly balls.

Damn!!!

Go Rays!

He's a legend, and a class act. This Red Sox fan wishes him well. Hope he returns to the mound and leaves under his terms.

As much as I dislike the Yankees, Mo is just awesome (to put it mildly) and for him to go down like this is horrible and tragic. I know it probably isn't likely, but I wish he could leave this game on his own terms, not because of this injury. That is, if this is a career ending injury. Get well soon!
