Let’s get rid of indefinite detentions and the patriot act. Close down homeland security. The only reason we have a homeland is because those in Washington think we are an empire.

I find this laughable, the only reason the TEA PARTY is against this law, is because of who's president....A puke president, we would not have heard a peep........

By that logic that would mean that you support the law because of who is in the white house

I think Adam Smith's bill should be put up for vote immediately, passed, sent to the Senate, passed, and signed by the Prez.

In the spirit of our Constitution, no one on our land should be held without a charge or a trial.

Why is it so hard for these politicians to veer away from what they took an oath to protect and defend? The constitution guarantees a right to due process. The Congress who voted for this travesty and the administration that exercises it have exceeded their collective authority. This subject should never have come up, but it seems that they never give up and they don't give a fig for what the American people want. This is a reason, irrespective of what else a politician has done, to vote him out of office. Do we really want anyone in government to have the authority to imprison anyone indefinitely, much less American citizens supposedly protected by our Constitution? Or as Bush said is it just "a piece of paper? It is time for a law that makes it grounds for impeachment to violate their oath of office and get rid of these guys, while serving as a warning to the rest.

So the politicization of judges done blatantly and on a massive scale under dubya is now coming to harm us. And our President goes along with it. Even when it is unconstitutional.

Yes, what were they thinking? This appalling legislation goes to prove, however, that the American constitution provides less protection to the American people than they might have imagined. And why did Obama sign this bill into law?

No politician of either party that voted for or signed a law that allows for the indefinite detention and/or killing of American citizens without due process deserves another term.

That the detention sections of NDAA passed at all should tell us all we need to know regarding Congress's lofty view of itself, and its contempt for the people and the people's Constitution.

I am surprised, but thankful, political pressure can still incite movements to amend. Still and yet, the fact that it passed is a frightening indicator of the state of checks-and-balances protecting liberty.

I'm thinking prison corporations have a hand in the NDAA.  They are the only ones who would benefit from this outrageous legislation.

There are others who would benefit in addition to private prisons.

Politico's who want the keep the populous in fear would benefit greatly.

Plutocrats with access to personal/private information who, at times, need a problem to just....'disappear'.

Just to name a couple.

It's an old story. First they came for our money by shifting the tax burden on the working man, but we didn't protest because we thought that we too might aspire to that lofty preferred treatment and were patriotic about supporting our government. Next they came for our environment and jobs with free trade, deregulation and off shoring. We didn't complain because we thought the other guy would lose his job, not us. We believed the job creators would continue to create jobs here. Then they came for our money with bailouts accompanied by bank and mortgage deregulation with a "get out of jail free" card attached. We didn't complain because some of us were making money and our house values were climbing and we didn't think of the impact on out economy and we trusted the politicians. Lastly they come for our freedom with unconstitutional legislating and we start to complain but it is too late. They want to keep their ill-gotten gains.

The Democrat bill and Ron Paul's bill seem to be pretty decent.  I'm not surprised that the republicans came up with a bill that does nothing.  The republicans are obviously trying to preserve the essence of the NDAA while pretending to be against it.

That's ridiculous. Republicans are trying to strike down NDAA also. Obama has actually used it already, while weakly protesting it. I'm thrilled both Democrats and Republicans are trying to get rid of this despicable legislation, no thanks to Obama.

The republicans are not trying to strike down the NDAA.  First of all, it was a republican idea, passed by a republican Congress.  The republicans held the US military hostage in order to ram their outrageous and unconstitutional legislation down our throats.   Second, the republican bill currently being proposed does NOTHING to strike down the NDAA.  Third, Obama has issued a signing statement saying he won't detain people indefinitely, and he hasn't used it yet.  He could not veto a massive defense bill without risking the lives of military personnel.  The republicans FORCED him to sign it.  This is a typical republican tactic.  They are holding every important bill hostage in order to ram their ideology down everyone's throat.  They did it with the debt ceiling, they did it with the annual budget, and now, they did it again by holding the military hostage.

What is new there? Why any working man would be a Republican is beyond me. For what they represent they should forever be in the minority party.
