Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer Signs Planned Parenthood Funding Ban

05/04/12 10:31 PM ET AP

PHOENIX -- Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday signed into law a bill to cut off Planned Parenthood's access to taxpayer money funneled through the state for non-abortion services.

Arizona already bars use of public money for abortions except to save the life of the mother. But anti-abortion legislators and other supporters of the bill say the broader prohibition is needed to ensure no public money indirectly supports abortion services.

Planned Parenthood Arizona claims a funding ban would interrupt its preventive health care and family planning services for nearly 20,000 women served by the organization's clinics. The organization says it will consider a legal challenge.

The measure targeting funding for Planned Parenthood for non-abortion services was one of several approved by Arizona's Republican-led Legislature related to contentious reproductive health care issues this session.

How's business Jan?

Why should taxpayers be responsible for someone else to have an abortion? It was their bad choice not to use protection, so they could have easily prevented getting pregnant in the first place. I don't think I should pay for their mistake.

Good job on totally not reading the article. You wouldn't have to pay for it not matter what - not just because you're too stupid to have a job.

Why did n't Jan Brewer's parents have an abortion?

I have to give Gov. Brewer credit, she did not cave into feminist or let political correctness dictate her position.
Who else has notice they never mention men and women and healthcare in the same sentence. Shouldn't we address the issues of both genders, or is it politcle incorrect to address mens issues along with womans issues

Let me explain something to you, mdipary2004. Planned Parenthood does serve men. But simply because their role in reproduction is small, so are the services offered. Men do not get short-shrift in medical care or research. I don't know what you know about anatomy, but men don't have such a separate reproductive tract like women have. The male reproductive tract is also part of the urinary tract. That's why men see a urologist for their sexual health matters. Urologists also treat women, but they do not treat their reproductive needs. So when people think of a urologist they mainly think of them as a "man's doctor." Only women are served by a gynecologist, because there is no real male equivilent of a gynecologist. Women's reproductive tracts are completely separate from the urinary tract, unlike in the male. So try not to get all bent out of shape when there's a discussion of WOMEN'S healthcare. Biology dictates that they are not the same.

The word "Women" appears in Obamacare over 137 times. The word "men" twice, as in "women and men", never just men alone.

Postate cancer affects men and men only, and there is very little research and funding for it.

That goes for male birth control as well.

Men are not allowed to petition for free care when they have breast cancer (yes, men get breast cancer) because they are men. Only women are allowed free care for breast cancer.

Boycott Arizona. How can you take away medical services for the less fortunate? All you MACHO people who carry concealed weapons, ask for "papers please", are afraid of women taking birth control, and can't stand women "choosing" what do with their vaginas. You are a State who should be ashamed of what you support and become.

Thanks for callin' it like it is, Numnuts. Is it too harsh to say Jan Brewer is a traitor to women and the poor?

Both my sisters live in Arizona and both carry concealed weapons.

What does concealed weapons have to do with the price of tea in China?

Women have enjoyed continually improving birth control options for the past 5 decades, while men's options have not changed in two hundred years.

Why is that?

Never said "concealed weapons" had anything to do with the price of tea in China. Too many guns, too many crazy people carrying guns, too many deaths from guns. Why do you need to carry them? On the off chance someone will try to murder you? My best friend lives in Arizona and doesn't carry one, nor does she want one in her purse or in her house. I also don't know what you're asking me about men's health options not changing. This is about women's reproductive rights being taken away from them and the state wanting to regulate Vaginas. If men ejaculate and don't procreate, then I can only assume they are baby killers. That's according to the rules of Arizona and that seems to NOT be regulated. Why is that???????????

Well there you go. You can thank the Tea Party and the one issue, take my ball and go home, I 'm not supporting Obama because he didn't save the spotted owl, liberals for this glimpse into America's future. Obama is not perfect and if all you lefties think some magical third party candidate is going to descend from the heavens or if you'll sit this election year out because "Obama's in bed with wall street" or some other hippie rambling talking point, get ready for Tea Party 2.0 in 2012. I have no sympathy for anyone from Arizona complaining. This is what you voted for.
08:26 AM on 05/08/2012
It's a harsh truth, Blackjack572: if people don't want candidates like Jan Brewer in office ~ where she can wreck havoc on their lives ~ they need to make sure they don't get voted in.

*sigh* because they don't let it trickle down.....

I don't always agree with the man but I firmly believe he is the lesser of the two evils by an exponetial factor. The GOP will try and reinstate trickle down economics and if they are allowed to it will finish off our struggling economy.

What in the H-E double toothpicks has happened to AZ? I don't know much about the history of AZ, but in 2012 that state is beyond reason. I will not visit or spend any $ there until it shapes up.

AZ has joined the list of States I will not spend a dime in. Not in person, or over the net, or in any way, as long as I can discern where the business is located. Pretty much the entire former CSA are on that list.
If we starve them, who would care?

I'll never understand that as long as I live. I don't know whether women voted her in, or whether not enough women bothered to vote. It could be either one. I'll bet they won't be making THAT mistake again.

Does it matter?

More women need to be in politics. If we've heard it once, we've heard it a million times.

Well, this is what you get, so give yourself a big pat on the back and support your sister!

Men are just as welcome as women at PP. They provide contraception, counseling and STD testing for men who care to go there. There are reproductive needs women have that are not the same as men's needs. But they don't discriminate on the basis of gender, so I don't see what your issue is.
The fact is that more women than men concern themselves with family planning, which makes sense. After all, a man would never be pregnant.

You would have thought that Gov. Brewer would have learned from the mistakes of Gov. Perry. Doing the same failed thing over and over again in an attempt to reach different outcomes...oh, wait, that's the definition of insanity! What can I say: a mind is a terrible thing to waste!

I don't like this legislation or the ideology behind it but you get what you invest in democracy. Activist and voter opposition to these laws has been pathetic. Republicans are counting on a common failing of women, a lack of assertiveness. Bitch and moan all you want on TV and in blogs but until you take the fight to them you can expect your rights and dignity to be whittled away.
10:07 PM on 05/07/2012
Maybe we should talk about both men and women and healthcare
10:33 PM on 05/07/2012
What exactly is your point? Planned Parenthood is an organization that serves women's unique health needs. Last I checked, no one is trying to legislate and/or control the kind of health care, medication or medical procedures to which men have access.
