Chihuahua Costume Party Falls Short Of Record

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Hundreds of tiny tacos, ballerinas and other costumed dogs fell short of a world record Saturday morning in Kansas City, but organizers said they were encouraged by the turnout for the inaugural Cinco de Mayo Chihuahua parade.

Mark Valentine, the president of the group that organized the parade, said 500 dogs showed up in costume – about 200 fewer than what was needed to break the Guinness Book world record. The event, organized by United Entertainment to benefit a local animal shelter, was open to any breed.

Valentine estimated that 80 percent of the costumed canines were Chihuahuas, more than the 50 percent he anticipated.

"We are going to keep doing this until we run out of dogs in Kansas City and have to start shipping them in," Valentine said. "For a first try, we did OK."

Valentine said he was told Chihuahuas were among the most common breeds in animal shelters. Saturday's event raised about $2,500 for The Pet Connection, a local no-kill shelter.

"Chihuahuas get killed in animal shelters almost as much as pitbulls," he said.

Anne Fisher, a food stylist from Stilwell, Kan., about a half-hour south of Kansas City, said her male Chihuahua, Willie, seemed relieved when she slipped off his ballerina outfit after the parade.

"We figured he was going to be the smallest Chihuahua here, but he's not," she said of the 3-pound dog. "We're having more fun than he is. It's hysterical."

Just after 11 a.m., everyone in the crowd with a Chihuahua raised their pets over their heads. The result was a sea of tiny heads adorned with sombreros, cowboy hats, bows and even a Green Bay Packers football helmet.

Afterward, participants lined up and participated in a slow-moving procession along a sidewalk, as dozens of people in lawn chains watched the colorful animals strut past.

Valentine thought it was a little extreme that Guinness required a veterinarian to be on hand to make sure every dog registered for the event was alive. No dead dogs showed, he said, but someone did bring a potbellied pig.

"Apparently, they've had trouble with people sneaking pigs in," Valentine said.

Nippy, yippy Chihuahuas are almost always victims of bad breeding and/or bad owners! Of course, there are exceptions! I have had Chihuahuas since 1960. I have done Chi rescue for the last 8 yrs. Majority were very friendly with everybody. Some were afraid of strangers but were not aggressive, they avoided people. The few grumpies I have had were adopted from people who neglected, abused, or over-indulged them. www.chihuahuarescueandreferrals.com

In Austin the was a pit bull parade. I keep missing all of the fun events. I don't think Chico (my chihuahua) would like being in a costume though. If you want to stop over-crowding in animal shelters, then people need to stop buying animals from pet stores. Go to a local breeder, animal shelter or pound. Pet store get their animals from mills. Evil places. They will lie about it too, or at least bend the truth. The animals are more likely to have health or behavioral problems.

If you can't stop from being mauled to death by a 5lbs Chihuahua, maybe its best you don't go outside. It would take millions of bites for my Chihuahua to kill you IF you are dumb enough to lay there and let him do it.

Considering Chihuahuas don't have the same sweat glands that bigger dogs have, there probably wasn't much smell except for the poopin'. I bathe my Chi every 4-8 weeks and she never has any sort of smell unless she's been rolling around in something stinky.

I was never a big dog fan growing up. Lack of smell was a reason I got a Chihuahua (longevity, portability, litter-trainability and saucy personality were the other reasons).

Those dogs terrify me, they are so aggressive and act so viscious We have two in my neighborhood and the neighbors let them roam around free, I refuse to go out if they are out doors.

All you have to do, normally, is come down to their level and wait for them to come to you. If you were that small, you'd be terrified of the giant waiting to squash you, too.

I have 4 here and 3 in Mobile. They don't go outside - I'm scared something will get them.

Funny story: A hawk and my black and tan female got into a "I'm going to get you" contest through the glass door up here in Birmingham last summer. The hawk threatened. Jasmine responded. It went on for 20 minutes. The hawk finally flew off. Everyone in the house was in tears from laughing so hard.

Jasmine WILL put her teeth on you if you aggravate her enough, but she has NEVER drawn blood on anyone. I do have one that will though. And I always warn people to leave him strictly alone. It just depends on who they are - sort of like people. :o)

Too bad you did not capture that on video. Sometimes when I am driving out in my car, I will barely beep my horn and the little dog jump around like the noise suprised him, which it did i am sure, but they are too funny to watch. Plus i had an encounter with a big black bird (Crow) I guess , when walking at the park. I stopped to look for a a fish on a small bridge over a little river (maybe 50 ft wide), it was a wooden bridge for people and bikes only with metal bar railings going across. I was at one end, and I saw a the black bird land at the other, so I hit the metal bar with both hands and caused it to vibrate to down where the bird was at, the bird fail off the bar and was headed for the water about 10 ft below, i guess the bird finally figured out he could fly, so at the last minute he was able to fly off.

I am pretty sure that bird followed me around for day making a loud sqawking noise when i walked in the park. Birds and dogs are very smart, probably smarter than me. But i love having fun with them and watch their natural reactions to things. I would never hurt either.

Ever try kicking one, I mean really kicking it? I doubt you'll be bothered as much afterward.

:( Because they would likely be dead. My brother kicked my chihuahua once, He flew into the wall. If he had done that when i was older i wold have killed him. (My brother) They act all tough, but they normally don't bite, and even if they didn't, it's not that painful, even if they do draw blood. Not worth killing them over. Fine the owners and make sure the dog is up to date on it's shots.

"I doubt you'll be bothered as much afterward."

Depends on how the owner reacts.

I don't think I'd be very forgiving if anybody laid a harmful finger on my Chi.
If somebody kicked my dog they'd get a facefull of pepper spray, for starters.

Anybody who would kick a small animal would deserve every bit of justice coming to them.

What a goofy headline and lead-in to this story. Proclaiming failure because ONLY 500 Chihuahuas showed up for a parade?!!!
"Oh...how boring...next story please"
Bravo to the organizers and people who care about our canine buddies!

I have a wonderful Basset Hound I adopted through Pet Connection; he's sitting next to me now. Good people, good organization, got me a great companion. No event that helps them "falls flat". Best wishes to all on this thread that have been rescued by their rescues.
