Supermoon Photos 2012: Pictures Snapped By Skywatchers All Over (SLIDESHOW)

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: 05/06/2012 1:30 am Updated: 05/06/2012 12:05 pm

Supermoon Saturday has come and gone. But supermoon photos are still here for those who missed seeing the dazzling lunar display in person and those who simply want to see how things looked elsewhere in the world. No matter which part of the planet the photos came from, they look pretty dramatic.

The supermoon was at its most super at 11:34 p.m. EDT, when the moon was about 221,802 miles away from Earth, the Associated Press reported. That's about 15,300 miles closer than average, making the moon appear about 14 percent bigger than it would appear if it were at its farthest distance during its elliptical orbit.

Some people were too busy indoors to see the supermoon. And in some areas, weather got in the way.

"Clouds are more scattered, but still obstructing views in some areas," the Washington Post reported in an 11:10 p.m. blog post. One user commented on HuffPost Science's own live blog:

Our live blog brought in scores of photos from around the globe--from Maine to Florida, from Canada to Scotland and France. And some moonwatchers got lucky:

To all those who shared their snaps and their thoughts, we say thank you!

PALM SPRINGS, CA - MAY 5: A perigee moon, or supermoon, rises behind wind turbines on May 5, 2012 near Palm Springs, California. The moon appears especially big and bright during this once-a-year cosmic event as the full moon is at its closest to the Earth in its elliptical orbit. The perigee side of its orbit is about 31,000 miles closer than the opposite, or apogee, side. It was beautiful! I remember clearly looking at the moon on Saturday when heading to Target to buy my grand daughter Abi (7) a new Kindle Fire..She pointed it out and said, Gami OMG look at Luna! She is so big and bright and I replied...Wow she is beautiful. One of my most favorable moments with her becasue watching the moon is a favorite shared moment that we share together.

This comment could contain incredibly obscene things.

But moderators allowed it to be published.

Why?
02:02 PM on 05/08/2012
You feel this way because??? Because you can't read it. Maybe at Huffigton they have an interpreter-they certainly are quite above the National Equirer. I would also like to think anyone out there who CAN read this and DOES find this incredibly obscene would report it. I've seen some incredibly obscene posts in English lately.

I copied the text and pasted in "google translate"....try it....

It has nothing obscene....
that's kinda like thinking that someone who speaks a different language around you is talking about you...usually not true.

I think my company truck is bugged. during a long night of driving in 2010, during the brightest moon of the year, I jokingly howled at the moon while driving. after howling at the moon sporadically during the long drive, a message buzzed in to the truck's computer system. It read, "so, when do you want to have home time?" the night dispatcher asked my boss to listen to one of his drivers. he probably almost broke down and thought, "my gosh, I pushed one of my best drivers too hard. I might have broken him."

I had no idea it was some spectacular event..."supermoon". I was driving to work that evening and it was huge, and brilliant, then melon colored, later. And, the following morning, it was still visible, huge, and melon colored. I thought it was amazing. How cool!

I'd assume it was just big at sunset. Otherwise pretty typical full moon.
