New Libertarian Nominee Gary Johnson Slams Republicans For Gay Staffer Flap

Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson officially became the Libertarian Party's nominee for President on Saturday with 70 percent of the vote, and one of his first acts as an official candidate was to issue a strong indictment of the Republicans for the situation surrounding Mitt Romney's gay former foreign policy spokesman.

Mr. Johnson seems to be a rarity in his own party. As long as that intolerant faction drives the party's mesage and how they are perceived then the republican party will always have to carry that baggage. But because there are so many areas of intolerance within the party the question needs to be seriously asked and answered about whether the intolerance is truly small and localized or a common quality among conservatives.

But by definition, conservative means reticent to change. So it will be difficult to even have that conversation within the party, let alone consider change.

I wish Gary Johnson would have gained more traction in the primary. I definitely don't agree with his more radical ideas of slashing the government, but at least from a social perspective, he isn't nearly as bad as even some so called "Moderate" Republicans.

Libertarians are what the GOPt should strive to become. Instead the GOPt pretends to use Libertarian ideals (especially via ARand philosophies) while exposing the GOPt's twisted application of logic surrounding stringent social control issues, like anti- women's health and anti- gay rights positions. The Libertarians seem to have more thought behind their philosophies, and sadly, that is why they tend to lose to the parties that appeal to the emotions of the mob.

At some point the republican party is going to have to choose between embracing religious absolutism and winning over new members by dropping the religious bigotry. When that happens, the religious kooks may not have anywhere to go. And the country will be the better for it.

The Republicans pissed me off so much last election, I became a Libertarian. They have gone to the insane end of conservative. Neither side is protecting our freedom. They are all power hungry idots. They don't care about us! Time to add a new party or two.

Read up on libertarianism and it's impact on American politics. All you have to do is look it up on Wikipedia and do a little independent thinking on your own.

World-wide it is a leftist and even an anarchist outlook. In the US, conservatives use it to knock the monopolistic two-party system, which is a big distortion and impediment to more open and honest elections.

The US is unfortunately tied down to having only two parties. It is a historical accident because of the way national elections were designed and have been modified.

Many well-intentioned commentators do not realize this and some of them end up advocating reforms through third parties. But in general all this does is to result in wasted organizing and preventing reforms, the opposite of what many of these reformers intend.

With these conservative attitudes, I cannot understand how any LGBT person could consciously support the republican party. I'm incensed that this outright discrimination is legal.

What's really pathetic is how this party that supposedly champions individual rights can condone this behavior. Not a single "Name" republican has the huevos to stand up to the Evangelicals on this matter. If they did, the votes republicans would gain from independent voters would make up for what they lost in the church vote. Besides, who would the church people vote for as an alternative? Surely not democrats.
