WASHINGTON — Army investigators said Monday they found no bullet wound or evidence of foul play in the death of a soldier in Afghanistan who died during a Skype video chat with his wife.

Capt. Bruce Kevin Clark collapsed while speaking to his wife on May 1 from his base in Tarin Kot, Afghanistan, southwest of Kabul. His wife, Susan Orellana-Clark, has suggested that Clark was shot, citing a hole visible in the closet behind him that she believed was a bullet hole.

Investigators said an initial probe showed no trauma to the body except that Clark broke his nose when he fell forward. Orellana-Clark said he didn't seem alarmed before he collapsed.

Christopher Grey, a spokesman for the Army Criminal Investigation Command, said Monday that the investigation is still under way.

"But the important thing is that there was no bullet wound, no trauma," except that Clark's nose was possibly broken when he fell on his desk, Grey said in a telephone interview.

"We can positively say that Captain Clark was not shot," Grey later said in a statement.

An autopsy was done Friday but it could take several weeks to get results of toxicology and tissue testing done at that time, Paul Stone, a spokesman for the Armed Forces Medical Examiner, said Monday.

Clark's family released a statement Sunday describing what his wife saw in the video feed recording her husband's death.

"The closet behind him had a bullet hole in it," the statement said, adding that others, including a member of the military who came to Orellana-Clark's Texas home, also believed it was a bullet hole.

The statement says the Skype link remained open for two hours after Clark collapsed as family and friends in the U.S. and Afghanistan tried to get Clark help. Although it was the night of Monday, April 30, at his El Paso, Texas, home, Clark's time of death is officially listed as May 1, the date in Afghanistan at the time.

"After two hours and many frantic phone calls by Mrs. Clark, two military personnel arrived in the room and appeared to check his pulse, but provided no details about his condition to his wife," the statement said.

Despite the trauma of witnessing her husband's death from thousands of miles away, Orellana-Clark said last week through a statement issued by the family that she and her extended family were thankful that husband and wife "were together in his last moments."

Orellana-Clark said the reason for the family statement Sunday on the bullet hole was to provide details of what she saw "to honor my husband and dispel the inaccurate information and supposition promulgated by other parties."

Grey's statement Monday expressed condolences to Clark's family, friends, and fellow soldiers, saying "we know this is a very traumatic and difficult time for all involved."

Family spokesman Bradley Taber-Thomas said Monday the Army has not notified the family of any cause of death.

Grey said investigators will "consider all available evidence" before reaching a final determination.

"Although we have not completely ruled it out to ensure a complete and thorough investigation is conducted, we do not suspect foul play in the death of Captain Clark at this point," Grey said. "We will continue to keep the next of kin updated as the investigation continues."

Clark grew up in Michigan and previously lived in Spencerport, N.Y., a suburb of Rochester, his wife's hometown. He joined the Army in 2006 and was stationed in Hawaii before he was assigned to the medical center in El Paso. He deployed to Afghanistan in March.

Clark's body was returned Thursday to Dover Air Force Base. The body was still there Monday and officials said they didn't have information on when it would be transported to Spencerport for the funeral.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, aged 3 and 9.

Why is the cause of death being covered up in this case. They know what killed him. With all the silence, I tend to think it was a suicide and the military is just trying to save the wife the pain of admitting it.

My question is what condition will his body be in once his wife recieves it? If this is a cover-up, how will they 'hide' a bullet wound? If not a cover-up, then the proof will be what condition he is in once he is returned home. But on another note, my prayers are with this family during this difficult time.

probably a nail hole, maybe a dark colored tack...who knows? People who suffer heart attacks often look "alarmed" when the initial pain strikes. This is a such a tragedy, made more so by the fact that his wife witnessed his death. It's not surprising that she assumed his death was a result of enemy action.

Was it a heart attack? I didn't read the cause of death anywhere.

Why will it take weeks to get toxicology results in this case? Junior Seau committed suicide last week and they had the autopsy results the next day. Is a football player that much more important than a captain? Is all about the paycheck? Or maybe the entertainment value of the individual in question?

There was no cover up in this case. If shot, the results would have been horrific, with blood flying out of the exit hole. If no exit, blood would be seen when he collapsed forward towards the camera and screen.
11:45 AM on 05/09/2012
Not necessarily. There are types of guns that can shoot and not have a tremendous amount of blood splatter. It would also depend on where the person was hit. What you see on tv is all for show..

He's at Dover AFB...remember they have a tendancy to take bodies to the dump, and not put the right one where it is supposed to go to. I hope that doesn't happen in this case.
I think of that often when I go into Dover to shop, I don't live to far from there.

IF he had been shot, wouldn't the wife hear a gun fire?

Being a vet, I am well aware of the way the military distorts the truth when it suits them. Capt. Clark was obviously not in any distress while he and his wife Susan were speaking. Something traumatic occured and Susan saw a bullet hole in the closet behind her husband which hadn't been there previously.

Why did it take hours to get military personnel to respond to her husbands aid? Was there a possibility he could have been saved if help had arrived sooner? The autopsy is waiting for "toxicology results" which means they didn't find he died of a heart attack or other natural cause.

The decision has already been made. Capt. Clark's reputation is going to be smeared by the ME stating that his cause of death wass due to drugs/alcohol use in his body. Whatever the military is trying to cover up will be at Capt. Clark's expense and his widow's right to receive benefits such as - pension, health care, children's education, funeral expenses and more.

You can believe certain members of Congress are involved and 100% behind the cover up!

I find it difficult to believe you were in the military. If you were, you never saw combat, otherwise you'd know, that for him to die instantly, the would would need to be in the upper chest, neck or head, in which case, she would have seen an explosion of blood and gore coat the camera and computer screen.

Your understanding of how a bullet works seems very Hollywood to me. There are a million different scenarios that could have occurred in this situation. One very plausible one is that, IF there was a bullet, it traveled through a wall, a closet, clothes, a door and then into his back, which is where the bullet could have lodged. Just because you’re hit by a bullet doesn’t mean you have to explode (I’ve seen a few lodged into bones).

What the wife should have said was, “I saw what I THOUGHT was a bullet hole.” That hole could have belonged to anything in the world.

luckycur: As ArmyMedic replied to you, there is not always blood and gore with a bullet shot.

As for me, I was a Navy Hospital Corpswave (Medic) and treated the wounded returning from Viet Nam. I saw plenty of explosive wounds, multiple bullet shots and every kind of wound you can imagine.

There's a big difference between wounds received in the field of battle and gunshot wounds. Not all bullet holes are explosive. Depending on the calibre, they could just leave a small bullet hole and no surrounding blood.

The military reports no bullet hole, but can not give us any clue to what has actually taken this man's life? This story has been a mystery since the first moment it was 'reported' if you can call it that. The story was first published with no more facts than we have now. Military statements are always suspect, just because they are often caught in lies. The statement from the family is shrouded in a weird partial silence. This story needs to get a prize for the story being published with the least actual information. Above and beyond all this two children and a mother need our condolence at this sad time in their lives.

Why wasn't an autopsy performed???????????????????????????????

Well I guess if you read the story you would know the answer.

If I were her,I would make them take him out of the casket and I would check his body.Something is not right here. The arm forces like to cover up to much. They don't tell the truth.

Why would the armed forces cover anything up. He died of natural causes like a heart attack or something. What would be so bad they had to cover it up? You people and your conspiracies. You amaze me.

A heart attack could have been confirmed within a few days after his death. It's been 10 days and there don't seem to be any answers. I agree with you, in that it is most likely due to military bureacratic delays as opposed to some sort of conspiracy.
05:28 AM on 05/09/2012
Perhaps he had a heart attack. The bullet hole could be an old one. While it is sad she saw this how fortunate she was able to talk to him prior to this sad event.
