U.S. Senate candidate and Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock got choked up on Sunday while speaking at a Republican party event.
"Honestly, as I look at our nation's capital, I feel more frustrated with Republicans than Democrats," Mourdock, his voice cracking, said at the state GOP's annual Lincoln Day Dinner, according to the Tribune.
He continued by decrying bipartisanship, which he said had led the nation toward bankruptcy. "It is not bipartisanship we need, it is principle," he said.
Mourdock, a member of the Tea Party, is challenging incumbent Sen. Richard Lugar in Tuesday's Indiana Republican primary. The campaign between the two has been hotly contested, attracting the highest outside spending of any congressional race. A poll released last week showed Lugar trailing.
The race seems to have generated less interest among Indiana's early voters, who applied for ballots in significantly lower numbers than they had in the 2006, 2008 and 2010 primaries.
