Vandalized Holy Cross Church In Sant Cruz, California

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Vandalism at a historic Central California church that held artifacts from the 1700s is being investigated as a possible hate crime because anti-church graffiti and symbols were scrawled on the walls, police said.

Vandals struck at the Holy Cross Church in Santa Cruz before dawn Sunday. Windows were shattered by rocks, and paint was sprayed and poured on doors, walls and statues, according to Santa Cruz police spokesman Zach Friend.

The Roman Catholic Parish of Holy Cross is the home of Mission Santa Cruz, which was founded in 1791 as the 12th link in the chain of 21 Franciscan missions stretching from San Diego to Sonoma.

Among the damaged items was a baptismal font brought to Santa Cruz by Father Junipero Serra, who founded the mission system in California. The artifact was broken into several pieces, and it's unclear if it can be repaired, said Warren Hoy, spokesman for the Diocese of Monterey.

Phrases scrawled by the vandals, including "This is Ohlone land" and "This was made by slaves," appeared to refer to the history of the missions, many of which were built on land native to the Ohlone Indians. The culture clash decimated Ohlone power and the population in the region in the late 18th century.

The damage from the vandalism spread across the main church, the church museum, an adjacent home serving pregnant women and a garden area. Someone also climbed on a roof to spray-paint the church's bell tower.

The Holy Cross Church has been the target of minor vandalism in the past because of its mission history, but nothing on this scale, Hoy said.

Staff and volunteers have managed to clean off much of the paint, and officials were waiting Tuesday for repair costs on damage to statues and the baptismal font, he said.

Police are reviewing surveillance footage, which caught at least one person on video.

As an atheist I find all forms of vandalization abhorrent and regardless of who is to blame for this, it is simply wrong.

And to iamfirmin's comment against the President, grow up!

It's one thing to dislike someone or something or to disagree with someone or something, but it's quite another to attack someone or vandalize their property. It doesn't matter who the target is: Black, White, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, atheist, Buddhist, gay, straight, man, woman. Doesn't matter. I hope the authorities find the guilty party/ies and that the guilty party/ies pay for their crime

Jesus vandalized a Temple. The really important one. In Jerusalem. During Passover.

He was seized shortly afterward, whereupon the authorities found him guilty and made him pay for his crime.

So, I really think you're on to something there.

/You cannot imagine how much I would love it if this vandal's name turns out to be Jesus.

The pyramids weren't built by slaves. The first recorded labor strike happened during the construction of the Great Pyramid.

(Cecil B. DeMille wasn't a historian.)

This doesn't surprise me, the hostility toward Catholicism, in a secular increasing world. Hate is not from God.

If god created all things then Hate is chief among them. The bible is full of stories where god mandates the slaughter of entire civilizations, that is pure hate.

Then you are not a believer, because according to your fantasy, god created everything, including Satan. You do know that Satan was an angel that fell right? You christians always are whining about how you are percieved, but yet you know nothing about the history of your own faith. Albeit a fairytale.

Christians believe that God created all of us with free will. Satan (which means "enemy") chose to reject God and place himself above Him. We don't believe God created puppets and is behind the scenes pulling strings all the time. That appears to be what the atheists believe about God however. No wonder they reject Him. I don't believe in a puppet meister either.

Yeah, because it was an expression of rage, not a reasoned argument.

They've probably already discovered how the Catholics respond to reasoned arguments.

Hence the rage.

The White House was also built by slaves,
are you going to "burn it to the ground?"

If the Church would stop their mission of hate and cramming their medieval beliefs down the throats of others, other would not react in an unacceptable way. It is very sad that the history was damaged. But, if Christians don't start being loving and tolerant, more of this will occur throughout the U.S.....and eventually there will be real violence. Christians have GOT to let go of the belief system that their way is the only way....or at least that we all have to follow it....and learn to live in a tolerant and open community without cramming their nonsense down everyone's throat. Whatever the reason, the vandalism was very wrong, however.

The Church is not "cramming their medieval beliefs down the throats of others". No one is forced to go to church or believe. What mission of hate ??? The Church upholds the teachings of Christ. Jesus said, they will hate you as they hated me.

Keep your medieval beliefs OFF of our bodies, OUT of our laws and in your little churches, and we'll all get along just fine. Keep legislating your questionable morality, and bad things will happen.

Please! Christianity is "in the water" in America, and is continually assumed, preached, etc. everywhere. It interferes with rational laws and has to be taken into account with virtually every move. The whole South is a Christian Theocracy.

Although these vandals probably felt strongly and were correct as to the roots of the Mission System, vile desecration of historical monuments is not the way to convey one's point.

I'm no fan of the Catholic church,it's history, or it's policies BUT this makes me angry. The California Missions are a part of our history and deserve to be preserved, not destroyed.

I hope they catch these vandals and put them where all vandals belong:In Prison.
