As part of an effort to "create a fun-filled afternoon" and "get people out of their houses," gourmet ice cream maker Häagen-Dazs will be offering free cones today at 250 store locations across the country between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., according to a company press release.
Customers can get one scoop each of one ice cream flavor; the full list of participating stores can be found on Häagen-Dazs' Facebook page.
If past Häagen-Dazs free cone days are any indication, ice cream fans better line up fast if they want to beat the rush. According to The Examiner, last year 41,300 free cones were served in New York City alone and the most popular flavor -- vanilla -- ran out first.
Individual stores could expect thousands of customers -- a Häagen-Dazs store in Orange County, Calif. reported serving 1,331 free scoops in 2011 and predicts they'll serve 1,500 this year.
