Audiences assembled in record-breaking numbers to see "Marvel's The Avengers" in theaters last weekend, and while some might see this as evidence of writer/director Joss Whedon's expert superhero capabilities, Whedon credits the film to his "insanely massive ego."
“I was out of my mind," Whedon told The Hollywood Reporter. "There was many times when I was writing, when I was filming, that I thought, a grown-up should be doing this!”
Fans of Whedon's TV shows -- "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Firefly," "Dollhouse" -- know that he has a knack for taking a group of fractured characters and creating a dynamic family unit. In "The Avengers," Whedon had to make sure that each character was given their due.
In the video interview, Whedon revealed that the most difficult challenge he faced was finding a balance among all of the characters and their flaws. Of course, his years as a TV showrunner must have come in handy for this challenge. “It’s all about figuring out just enough for everyone, because too much is going to throw people, and at the same time, you don’t want to leave anybody in the cold," Whedon said.
Judging from the overwhelming positive reviews and smashing box office numbers, it looks like the only people Whedon left out in the cold were the fans who waited until midnight outside of their local theater -- and that's a very good problem to have.
