ORANGE, Calif. — The blood-stained carpet was the first clue Arlet Contreras and her two young sons had not just abandoned their apartment in a gated Orange County complex.

Police began looking for them and Contreras' boyfriend, Shazer Fernando Limas, after a cleaning crew discovered the old stains on the walls and under the carpet they were pulling up.

When an observant officer spotted Limas in a parking lot in a nearby city, however, the 31-year-old fled, leading police on a high-speed chase that ended with his arrest on three counts of murder.

Prosecutors now believe that Limas, who works for a commercial cleaning supply company, stabbed his girlfriend and their 3-month-old and 1-year-old sons, on April 14 – nearly three weeks before police responded to the bloody apartment.

Investigators subsequently found Contreras' body in a Los Angeles County morgue where it had been lying unidentified for 10 days. The children have still not been found but are also believed dead, and authorities searched a nearby landfill Tuesday using a bulldozer and cadaver-sniffing dogs.

No one filed a missing report on Contreras or her children and there was no sign of trouble before the cleaning crew called police, he said.

"This is like something you'd see on TV, you know, and then you add in a car chase," said police Sgt. Dan Adams. "We were actively looking for all four of them because when our officers were at the apartment, it was evident that something had happened there and something was wrong. We definitely wanted to check on the welfare of all four of them, but when he led us on a high-speed chase, it raised our suspicion level very much."

Limas made a brief court appearance Monday in Santa Ana. His public defender asked that the arraignment be postponed to provide more time to review evidence in the case. The arraignment was continued until May 23. Limas remained in custody without bail.

On Monday, prosecutors laid out a timeline for the killings but acknowledged they have more questions than answers.

Authorities believe Limas stabbed his family to death April 14, in part because he reported to Long Beach Memorial Hospital the following day for surgery for a cut on his hand, Senior Deputy District Attorney Scott Simmons said.

Also, Contreras' body was found with stab wounds under a tarp in a gutter in La Puente, a city more than 20 miles north of the couple's apartment, according to police.

Ten days after Limas killed the three, prosecutors said, he purchased a tarp at a Home Depot and dumped Contreras' body the next day.

More than a week later, on May 3, the cleaning crew called police to report the bloody carpet and within a day, Limas was under arrest and police had found Contreras' body.

"There's a lot of things that we're still working on. I don't know what he was doing specifically between the date of the murder and the date of the body dump. I don't know where he stored the body. I believe it was at the apartment somewhere," Simmons said after the court hearing.

Limas was recently ordered by an Orange County Superior Court judge to pay $284 a month in child support to Contreras starting April 1, and that could be a possible motive, Simmons said.

Limas has been cooperative and has talked to investigators but has not provided the location of the children's bodies, he said. Authorities would not say whether he had confessed.

"We're just doing due diligence and doing everything we can to locate these two children," Simmons said. "But I'm confident in the case even if we don't find the children."

Limas has no known criminal history but has a handful of cases in family and civil court, according to court records.

In 2007 court filing, one of Limas' ex-wives said that he grabbed and wrestled her to the door and pointed an air gun at her and pulled the trigger. The gun was empty but the attack aggravated the woman's back injury, according to the request for a temporary restraining order filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.

A judge issued the woman a one-year protective restraining order requiring Limas to stay at least 100 yards away and not call her, records show.

She and Limas filed for divorce days later.

Limas also was ordered to pay $302 a month to support a daughter from another relationship, according to court files.

Probably all abt money, some men are resorting to extreme measures to get out of child support payments, but what a coward and villian. Sad also the young mom had no other family to report her missing.

When I read stories like this one, I further acquaint myself with the under belly of man's evil nature and it's utterly contemptible disdain toward human life. Shazer 'Fernando' Limas serves as a quick study.

In the name of $284.00 a month child support, Limas savagely took the lives of his two precious and innocent children, ages 3-months and 2-years and their mother!

He and those like him, represent ALL that is despicable in human beings! He greatly deserves NOTHING LESS than a NEEDLE!

Murder has become all to frequent today. Don't like someone, murder them, don't want to pay child support, murder them, Mom and Dad say no, murder them, children get on someones nerves, murder them, get fired, murder them and on and on and on. Life is precious, it should be respected. They say that the day of recollection is near, from what I am witnessing I am beginning to believe it.

I do lots of historical research, and end up reading lots of old newspapers, its not really new, in fact is
07:26 PM on 05/09/2012
It may not be new but the incidents of these things have increased in an alarming rate.

No wonder he went crazy how could anyone live with paying $586 a month to two different monthers.
04:56 PM on 05/08/2012
maybe the creep should have thought of that before procreating so many times... Also it takes more $$ than that to raise a child...

We need to find a way to save Tax payer money. These killers should be sent off to some way off island to fend for themselves. Why have them keep mooching off the tax payer? Keep them away from soicety and isolated for life.

My sentiments exactly but the justice system thinks that would be inhumane.

How sad! The fact that no one missed a mom and her two babies for ten days is sad enough and then for their lives to be snuffed out-It probably WAS for child support! I know my ex was never more crazy than when the child support was awarded. They see it as a payment to women for women to have fun with. I KNOW there are women who abuse child support but most of us need it because children aren't exactly cheap! I hope they find those poor babies and lay them to rest, properly.

The article stated that no one had reported the mother and children missing. That is not unusual in today's society, since families are more separated and not very close.

The way things are going, with so many killings and body dumpings, perhaps we need to create government authorized facilities for body disposal. Maybe large, red metal containers in conspicuous locations. Instead of dumping bodies in gutters, wooded areas or bodies of water, make it convenient for killers to leave them in a secure place. Identification of remains would be easier. Survivors wondering what happened to missing loved ones would be comforted. We have to change with the times, and murder seems to be a growth industry.

how about this, the goverment treat mental illness and pay for medical care for all people.. i think crime would drop a lot if more people got help with their problems. murder sucks and i don't think violence against women and children will stop any time soon. do you know that in third world countries like venazwala they publish a newspaper on mondays that reprots the murders from friday night until sunday night every week? i was there one time and the murder rate for the weekend was 55, this country could be so much worse.

Hey Limas, here's an idea, instead of making children you obviously do not want and will not take care of, stop having them!! It can not possibly be that difficult for you to use a condom to prevent this from happening and I swear if I hear one more person say they were victims of child abuse and that is what is causing all of this, I'm going to scream!! I was the victim of every kind of abuse you can possibly think of starting at age 3 and I haven't killed anyone (yet!!) but you know what, I survived it and I chose to live my life as a survivor not a victim.

That's true I was a victim of child abuse since the day I was born by my mom. Got married at 21 got married to my only son's dad which abused me like an animal, than remarried twice after that and the abuse has never stopped. I am 60 now and promised I would never pass the way I was abused down to my only child. Never killed my mom god knows I wanted to but, I chose not to dirty my hands on abusive moms like her. Instead even though she still lives I just keep my distance and I promised myself that I would never, ever abuse my child. I also survivd the abuse and chose to live my life and let God take care of all those who have so badly abused me in the past and now. I live for my child the only good thing God gave me, (that's what I cling to) no regrets.

I applaud your sense of direction and showing that you, despite all we have been through, do have a moral compass. I was abused by my husbands as well (it's called learned behavior) but I swore I would never, ever pass on what happened to me to my son and like you I didn't. He is a doctor, married, with children of his own and has no idea what I went through growing up and through any of my marriage, and I hope he never will. I think it's great that not only did we come out ahead as refusing to continue to be victims, we broke the cylce that has handed down throughout our family. Congratulations to you and God Bless you.
