SAN FRANCISCO -- Investigators have located a vehicle that may be connected to the abduction of a Northern California teenager who's been missing for nearly two months, authorities said Tuesday.

Santa Clara County sheriff's Sgt. Jose Cardoza wouldn't say where or when the red Volkswagen Jetta was recovered. Surveillance cameras and witnesses put the car near the area where authorities believe 15-year-old Sierra LaMar was kidnapped in Suburban San Jose on March 16.

"It's still an open investigation," Cardoza told The Associated Press on Tuesday following a briefing in San Jose. "Our investigators do not want to compromise the case. We do not want to jeopardize anything."

Authorities believe Sierra was kidnapped near her home in Morgan Hill while she was walking to a bus stop on her way to school. The car's discovery comes a day after the sheriff's office released a photo of a red Jetta that's similar to the car linked to the disappearance.

Investigators are now looking for anyone who saw the car – which also has a black hood – in the area and who may have been riding in it at the time of Sierra's abduction, Cardoza said.

"We really need the public to come forward and help provide us with any information they may have about this vehicle," Cardoza said. "We want to know if they saw it in Morgan Hill, outside of Morgan Hill during the time she went missing so our investigators can piece everything together."

Cardoza said investigators asked Sierra's family asked about the car, but they have no knowledge of it.

Sierra's mother, Marlene LaMar, told KGO-TV on Monday that the car is just the kind of solid lead her family has been hoping for.

"I know everybody out there is going to do everything possible to report the sighting of this car," LaMar said.

The mother said she is convinced her daughter is still alive, and she had a direct message for anyone involved with her disappearance.

"I am not looking for trouble or a conviction. I just want – we all want her safe return. We all want this nightmare to end, and that's my plea out there," she said.

Despite Sierra being missing for nearly two months, there are no indications that she is dead, Cardoza said.

Dive teams were searching private ponds in rural Morgan Hill on Tuesday and were expected to search in unincorporated reservoirs in south San Jose, Cardoza said.

I know scads of teenage girls from the SF Bay area and that brings it extra close to my heart that one in their midst is missing like this. It could have been any of them. As long as stories like Jacee Dugard's turn up, it will continue to give hope that other missing kids are still alive and may someday be reunited with their families. I so much hope for that to be the case with Sierra.

You say that like it doesn't happen everywhere. In some places these same guys kidnap them and then sell them as sex slaves... it makes me sick how uncaring and cold people in the world are.

Prior to anyone talking about the red jetta, there were two attempted "unrelated" kidnappings in Contra Costa County involving an older red compact car. Just a coincidence. One saw an electrical device (stun gun)? Makes some sense, but we do not know whether this is a stolen car. or where they "recovered" it from. Where I am, there was a man found dead not 300 feet from where I work, and I was so suprised to find that most of the people I work with would not have stopped if they saw someone laying on the sidewalk. They would not get involved. This is sad, in these days of horrible things happening, that we can't count on good samaritans to keep their eyes open. I want to appeal to everyone, from everywhere, get involved, keep watch even over other children, that your child is playing with. Work together to stop this from happening.

I hope they post a picture of it at the local schools. Sounds like either the car had been in an accident w/two tone paint, been recently painted to change the vehicle, or young guys who were working on the car in somebodies garage (buddy of a buddy?)? Maybe changed a piece to throw off the investigators, or changed a piece because if was damaged by blood? Perhaps they got a piece from the junkyard? Hopefully, they will get to her soon and she will be alive; if they hurry.

The article said she went missing in San Jose but it was actually Morgan Hill. Morgan Hill is a small family community where this type of thing never happens. This is why I DROVE my daughter's to school (and back) every day. There are preditor's EVERYWHERE. Any parent that thinks there children are safe walking to school is sadly mistaken. Any parent that thinks their daughter is safe while away at college is also SADLY MISTAKEN. Proven by the MANY abductions of college student's every year.

The difference between San Jose and Morgan Hill is only a few miles. I should know. I lived in the area for a few years.

I've lived in San Jose my entire life. And Morgan Hill is more than just a few miles away. It takes more than 30 minutes to get there; it's completely a different city.

Well, the thing is, if you know how to, and are willing to defend you're self, you'll be fine walking, sometimes you have to kill, in that kind of situation, you can have no remorse, it's a do what needs to be done kind of situation.

We are still talking about our children...You propose that we arm them to send them to school? Should young women carry knives or guns? Should we begin military training for our kids in grade school so they can survive the walk to and from their regular classes? What sort of society has such a cavalier attitude about adopting a kill or be killed mentality rather than focusing on keeping children safe and unjaded? You talk like the thought of having to kill another human being to survive is just the way life has to be. What a sad mindset. SMRH
