Prince Harry Dead: Baby Pygmy Hippo Dies After Surgery In South Africa

Baby Hippo

The Cango Wildlife Ranch in Oudtshoorn, South Africa has announced that Prince Harry, the adorable baby pygmy hippo that became an Internet star after he was born last month, died around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday morning due to complications from surgery.

According to a press release issued on the ranch's website today:

Prince Harry the pygmy hippo was operated on today to repair an umbilical hernia, which had the potential to cause gut strangulation. Unfortunately at the conclusion of the operation he went into respiratory arrest and ultimately heart failure. Despite repeated attempts to resuscitate him, Harry passed away on the operating table.

Prince Harry's birth shed light on the endangered species of hippo, which live in West Africa and are threatened by the bushmeat trade, according to the South Africa Star. Wildlife experts estimate there are only 3,000 pygmy hippos left in the wild.

But Harry's birth on April 2 also captured the world's attention because the little hippo almost didn't make it: his mother Hilda rejected him and staff members at the Cango Wildlife Ranch had to care for him around the clock in order to ensure his survival.

The little hippo was reportedly doing well earlier this month, and discussions were under way to make him the face of South Africa's tourism campaign, according to NBC News.

For now, the Cango Wildlife Ranch is urging mourners to remember Prince Harry's accomplishments.

"In Harry’s short life, he managed to raise much needed awareness for his species and their plight in the wild, and Cango Wildlife Ranch will continue to fly the flag of awareness for this species in honour of Harry’s life," the ranch said in the press release.

What a darling pygmy hippo with his cute little pink tongue hanging out. The picture
of the young hippo licking the girl's face in the photo is adorable. I'm sure the vets
did everything in their power to keep Prince Harry, the young pygmy hippo alive.
Rest in peace, darling little Prince Harry.

Umbilical hernias that are patent are very dangerous. I doubt they would have done the surgery if it was only herniated fat. Depending on how large the hole is, a loop of intestine can get trapped and strangulate, so there's a good chance he would not have lived long without the surgery.

I got on the phone and called out vet. He could hear Coley crying and all he said was I will be right there.
I sat in the kitchen floor and stroked his head while the Vet gave him a shot to end his life.
The Vet told him, Coley you were my favorite. This little fellow was so strange looking, but he had a heart of gold.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Coley. He sounds like a wonderful and very special dog.
I know what it's like to lose a pet to cancer. It's happened to me twice and one feels
so helpless because there's nothing you can do. So sorry for your loss.

Thank you, we have lost three to cancer.
Different types and places but cancer none the less. Coley was my Vets favorite. It seemed no matter how bad Coley felt he was always ready for a little bit of play.
When I would take him to the vets office, the vet would slap his legs with his hands and Coley would slap the floor with his front paws and give him a playful growl.
The day the Vet had to put him down he told him, Coley you have always been my favorite.

My wife and I rescue Shar-Pei. Several years ago the rescue group ask if we could help one in a kill shelter in NC. We made arraignments and went down and got him. The poor little guy was in awful condition. He smelled to high heavens. I took him straight to our Vet.
After checking him out he said the good thing was he didn't seem to have any disease that could be spread to my other two dogs. I bought shampoo that cost me 110 dollars a gallon. The vet said we should bathe him every other day. We did and in a few weeks he was looking so much better. He had lesions all over him and we had them removed. He was one of the most un-pretty shar-pei I had ever seen. But he was happy and a pretty good boy.
About a year later we noticed he was getting some new lesions. We took him back to the vet to see about removing the new lesions. When they did a biopsy, they found he had melanoma
cancer. The vet said there was nothing they could do. That the cancer did not respond to chemo or radiation. He gave us some pain pills and for a couple of months he did pretty good.
Then one morning we were awakened by Coley crying out in pain.

So Sorry..........
We adopted our Roxanne after she was abandoned by the owner. She was a pup and we nursed her ( with vet) through Parvo. The next year she started yipping in pain if she jumped off the couch or anything.....the Vet found cancer in her front leg. He said she would die in a very short time if we did not have her leg and shoulder removed. Poor baby, she had the surgery and chemo. Today, 17 years later, she is still getting around and has been a good friend...........our $2000 rez dog has been a sweetie.

That is great. Right now has been the longest we have been able to keep the Shar-Pei. They have a short life span, and many of them we just have to guess at their age. Two of them that we have now were only two years old when we got them so we still have several good years with them.
WE have one old boy, we don't really know how old he is but he looks old. He is doing good right now but our experience with these dogs tell us that just any time it could go bad for him.
He will have it good however long that is.
We say he is a SOB, a sweet old boy.

There is a drug the vet can prescribe that helps a lot with joint pain. If it gets too bad for asprin. I think it's called Deramaxx.
A friend of mine has a Jack Russel that has some joint problems. I am not sure if it is Arthritis or something different. But you can discuss it with your Vet.
