Harry Reid Weighs In On Obama's Gay Marriage Endorsement

05/09/12 07:32 PM ET AP

Harry Reid Gay Marriage

WASHINGTON -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman but that states should decide whether it's legal for same-sex couples to marry.

The Nevada Democrat says he believes that people should marry whomever they want, and that, in his words, "it's no business of mine if two men or two women want to get married."

Reid says his children and grandchildren already take marriage equality as a given and that their view is a glimpse of the future.

Reid's home state of Nevada voted to ban gay marriage in 2002.

Reid's comments came in a statement Wednesday after President Barack Obama became the first president to endorse same-sex marriage.

Just a small bit of clarification is needed here, as the first two paragraphs actually have Reid standing on THREE sides of a single issue.
He approves and thinks it's OK
He disapproves and thinks it should be state's rights
He thinks it should have no binding power if the people move to another state and are arrested for practicing their personal rituals.

Of course, it MIGHT be Reid's fault, and not the author of the article.
I mean, Reid IS old, eh?

"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman." Reid then says "he believes that people should marry whomever they want, and that, in his words, 'it's no business of mine if two men or two women want to get married.'"

Aren't those two statements somewhat contradictory? Perhaps Reid is speaking through his Mormon faith.

Has everyone forgotten that reid is also a mormon? What do you expect from those people?

It doesn't matter what old people think about social issues...they had their day. It seems like the level headed ones (Democrats) understand this and realize that the younger upcoming generations will be less violent, less racist and less homophobic !!! Someday there will be equality...someday people of America will finally realize true FREEDOM !!!!

Reid's beliefs are on the same wave as Romney's mormon beliefs...marriage should be between a man and a woman and a woman and a woman...(stolen from another poster :o)

The older politicians of both parties need to get in tune with the 21st century. Their way and beliefs of the traditional way things are done and beliefs show just how out of step they are with reality.

Sorta reminds one of the Catholic Church doesn't it. Very closed-minded, bigotted, discriminatory, full of pedofiles that the hierarchy protects ... All the things Jesus stood for. Right. M. Ghandi once said ... " I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so UNLIKE YOUR CHRIST."

I'm ok with Harry Reid's position. He has the right not to support gay marriage, so long as he doesn't get in the way of people who want it. It's like abortion. If you don't agree with it, fine. But it's nobody's business if a woman decides to make that decision. It's a personal decision for a woman to make, and everybody else needs to get out of the way. I wish the GOP would do the same. Allow people to make their own decisions and stay out of it.

I know harry reid when I lived in Las Vegas... and went to his galas there. when he first became a senator. Al Gore was at that rally also.. He is very involved with his district,, and I still get his emails from Nevada.. I have friends who still live there.. and with the economy is in the downside.... it is slowly coming back... but there are negatives within the house and senate on the state level.. that is holding back Nevada getting back into the swing of being up and going again..

But see the Repulsive/Teabaggers would have to take a good looking hard look in the mirror and see what a fraud they are and that thought is so frightening to them that they can't even imagine it. So they wagg their finger (ala Governor Jan Brewer, Arizona) at everyone else. Yet, when the index finger is pointed, there are 3 fingers pointed back. They claim to be Christians, but I digress.

I'm okay with his position. I think it's one more people who are uncomfortable with same-sex marriage should take. You don't have to like it but please don't restrict my rights because it makes you uncomfortable. When I'm uncomfortable with something or don't agree with something on a personal level, I avoid it. I don't spend hours of my life trying to get it banned. Assuming it's something that doesn't negatively affect me or anyone else.

Why should this issue about supporting human rights even be debated? It shouldn't be based on religious dogma, but it should be about what human rights, nothing else. Religion is not what rules our Democracy.

because it is the way.. the right side likes to get into the moderates faces.. I agree with you.. the female issues were going along fine.. for 50 yrs.. and bingo.. the individual states brought on by the southern right side of the aisle people.. became "concerned" about the female's medical concerns..and started cutting up the rights of women.. and causing more insurance charges to the insurance forms.

ever been in Utah?? if you travel in the state of Utah.. and even driving thru?? Make sure all your medicines are in the original medicine bottle.. because you will be detained at the nearest police station and your prescriptions will be checked out by the police .. believe it.. I happened to a friend of mine.. stopped for speeding..and one thing led to another.. It was proven the meds were prescribed to her.. and she was released. good luck in Utah..

At least one of the political parties should actually be for freedom and justice for all. Most people state their religious beliefs as the reason they do not support equality in marriage. Religion is being used to try to deny many people's rights, including womens' by extremists. I am glad that President Obama came out against DOMA long ago and has finally taken the last step in recognising-that human rights, freedom, and equal protection under the law- should not be dictated by any religious dogma. Proud of you today Mr President!

and I bet 1/2 of those religiously linked marriages should have divorced the first year. but they stay together because they promised their god in church before witnesses..to live together for the rest of their lives... and as the years go on... they are just making themselves miserable.. and hate turns to violence.. and I would say a few of these "Until death do you part" promises did turn into death via murder.
