Indonesia Airplane Missing: Russian-Made Plane Loses Contact

CIDAHU, Indonesia -- Search and rescue teams found the wreckage a Russian-made passenger plane on a mountain Thursday after it disappeared during a demonstration flight in western Indonesia. The conditions of the 48 people on board are not known.

Helicopters had resumed a search halted earlier because of bad weather. They saw the wreckage along a cliff on the mist-shrouded mountain, Maj. Ali Umri Lubis, of Atang Sanjaya Air base, told Metro TV.

"The helicopter just informed us that they spotted the wreckage about 10 minutes ago," Lubis said. "It was at about 5,000 feet. The condition of the wreckage is still unclear."

The Sukhoi Superjet-100, Russia's first new passenger jet since the fall of the Soviet Union two decades ago, left Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta on Wednesday afternoon for what was supposed to be the second demonstration flight of the day. Potential buyers and journalists were on board.

The jet dropped off the radar 21 minutes later, immediately after the crew asked air traffic control for permission to drop from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet (3,000 meters to 1,800 meters), said Daryatmo, chief of the national search and rescue agency.

They didn't explain the change of course, he said. Drizzle was falling at the time, but it was not stormy and there was no obvious signs of trouble.

More than 800 people, including soldiers and police, were taking part in the search and rescue operation.

Though weather was clear Thursday, they were battling rugged and often steep terrain.

Russia's aerospace industry was badly undermined in the economic turmoil following the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

The Superjet - developed by the civil aircraft division of Sukhoi with the co-operation with Western partners - was widely considered the country's chance to regain a foothold in the international passenger plane market.

It's "Welcome Asia!" tour, which also included stops in Pakistan, Myanmar and Kazakhstan, was intended to drum up support.

Sunaryo from PT. Trimarga Rekatama, the company that helped organize Wednesday's event, said 48 people were on board.

Among them were eight Russians, all from Sukhoi companies, none of them diplomats, he said, correcting reports earlier by search and rescue officials.

The passengers included one American, a consultant with PT. Sriwijaya Airline, and a Frenchman with aircraft engine-maker Snecma, he said.

The Superjet - a 75- to 95-seat plane - was being touted as a challenger to similar-sized jets from Canada's Bombardier Inc. and Brazil's Embraer SA.

It made its inaugural commercial flight last year.

So sad.....

Can you imagine how the people on the first demonstration flight feel?

Lucky, for sure, but that good fortune comes along with a hefty dose of survivor's guilt.

This is no way to treat your buyers. AND if the pilot requests to drop to 6000 ft you might inform him the mountain is 7,200 feet tall.

Might be a control tower issue here.

I've heard this comment 10,000 times here, this was a very experienced pilot who just flew this route, and there is a good possibility the avionics failed and that is why the pilot was calling the tower.

Super no more. Very sad indeed. And it was all being done for the best of intentions. I pray for the victims and their surviving loved ones. Life is very fleeting indeed.

Like you were really there? Sounds like a mechanical error, for which the pilot did have time to make the necessary corrections and why he notified the tower for guidance.

oh, I suppose you were really there.......Pilot error.

yes, the "error" consists of agreeing to fly anything "made in Russia"

"This plane looks like a cheap knock off of the Boeing 737-100. A plane that was first designed and flown nearly 50 years ago."

This one is 40% more fuel efficient than a Boeing 737-100.

Those people that are gleeful of the fact that a Russian plane failed should keep in mind that there is still an investigation going on, so plane quality may have nothing to do with this tragedy.
Also, for those of you remarking how you should 'fly boeing, never fly a Russian plane, etc.' keep in mind that boeing (as well as other european companies) participated in the building of this plane: http://www.aerospace-technology.com/projects/sukhoi/

So maybe the problem wasn't that the plane was Russian made, but that it was internationally made. Too many cooks in the kitchen so to speak.

The point I'm making is no matter how tempting it is to gloat let's at least wait until the official results of the investigation before we mock the dead.

This stinks to high heaven. Another corporation building something american corporations want to sell for has a serious accident with buyers on board. No one can convince me that was coincidence. A BP oil well blows up 11 hours after Halliburton worked on that exact spot where it blew, a russian plane drops out of the sky with buyers on board, we invade Iraq four weeks after they sign a contract to sell their oil to Russia and France - we even told France to fight AGAINST THEIR OWN ECONOMIC INTEREST to destroy Iraq and massacre a million innocents for profit.

This nations has turned to fascism. But this time it is not a goverment that commits the crimes but the force that was behind the German's rise of fascism too: the corporations.

Since they were below the altitude they were cleared for, and there was no SOS, it appears to be a case of pilot error. Could it have been a mixup between feet and meters? This shouldn't spoil the sale. Remember, the first B-17 crashed just beyond the south end of Boeing Field in 1935, but they went on to build over 12,000 of them.

A military accepting a 5(?) mission lifespan for aircraft and crew has a bit more tolerance for crashing than civilians.
02:19 AM on 05/10/2012
Actually, that plane, a 299, crashed due to locked controls, pilot error. The Boeing Co. didn't build the B-17 with an eye toward a limited lifespan, nobody does, but some parts are replaced after a certain time in use, like helicopter rotors.

All I meant was that this crash is unlikely to dampen enthusiam for this airplane.

Are you serious? I would put my money on faulty avionics, the pilot just flew this route.
12:33 AM on 05/10/2012
anybody else bothered by the fact that all these new stories about this event always stressed the fact that it was a Russian plane that crashed? As if, because it was a Russian plane, it was just a give-in and was going to crash?

Yes it's horrible but the plane crashed, and I feel for the families of the people who were on the plane, but I'm also really bothered out every new site, the Associated Press, Huffington Post, CBC, NBC, CNN, everybody!, Makes a big deal out of the fact that it was a Russian plane.

Again, I note that it was a very important Russian plane. This was supposed to be there big comeback in the worldwide commercial aviation business. And like I said it's horrible that it. But if it was an American plane, say from Boeing, or European plane from Airbus, or even a Canadian plane from bombardier, would all these news organizations be made a big deal out of nationality that the plane came from? probably not.

The fact that Boeing and Airbus dominate the commercial airplane market means that it is a story when someone else's new aircraft crashes. But you can bet it would be a huge story if Boeing's new 787 or Airbus's A380 crashed.

Btw, Russian civil aircraft and airlines have a pretty terrible safety record. They are much more likely to be involved in a crash.

That is untrue, just a popular misconception. There are probably more Russian/Soviet made planes crashing, but not for the reasons you think. 3rd world countries usually buy Russian/Soviet made planes (not Boeing or Airbus), and they have a pretty dismal record of craft maintanance. As a result, neglected aricraft then crash. Or they simply keep using Russia/Soviet planes that should have been decommissioned long ago. There are very few plane crashes in Russia itself, and those that do happen, are usually related to human error (icing, not enough speed on takeoff etc.) and not the quality of the plane.
