Knicks Lose To Heat, Eliminated From 2012 NBA Playoffs

By TIM REYNOLDS 05/09/12 09:54 PM ET AP

Heat Knicks Game 5
Tyson Chandler #6 and Amar'e Stoudemire #1 and Landry Fields #2 of the New York Knicks defend LeBron James #6 of the Miami Heat in Game Five of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals in the 2012 NBA Playoffs on May 9, 2012 at the American Airines Arena.

MIAMI — LeBron James decided not to play in New York two summers ago. He won't be playing there any more this season, either.

The Knicks have been put away, and the Miami Heat are headed to the second round of the NBA playoffs.

James had 29 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade both scored 19 points and the Heat ousted the Knicks 106-94 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference first-round series Wednesday night.

Miami won the series 4-1, and will meet Indiana in the East semifinals starting Sunday in Miami.

"We will savor this win tonight," James said. "And then we get to work tomorrow and get ready for Indiana."

Carmelo Anthony scored 35 points for the Knicks, including a spinning jumper over James at the end of the third quarter that pulled New York within 81-67.

It wasn't enough to stave off an all-too-familiar playoff result for Anthony, who was chosen two spots behind James and immediately ahead of Bosh and Wade in the 2003 NBA draft. Anthony has been in 11 postseason series, winning just two, the won-lost record of his teams in those games a mere 17-37.

Amare Stoudemire scored 14 points before fouling out, Landry Fields and J.R. Smith both scored 12 and Tyson Chandler grabbed 11 rebounds for New York.

Stoudemire fouled out with 4:48 left, and the Knicks put together one more run with hopes of saving the season. New York cut the margin to 11 points four times in a 2-minute span, and Miami answered every time, the last of those a 3-pointer by Shane Battier with 54 seconds left.

That sent the white seat covers flying in all corners of the arena, the fans knowing it was finally over. After the final horn, James and Anthony shared an embrace, like many other players.

"It was fun, man," James said. "He's one of the most competitive players I've ever played against in a playoff series."

The first game day salvo came eight hours before tipoff, when Wade sent a verbal jab toward former teammate Mike Bibby.

"I know Mike has made more shots in this series than he made all last year. I know that. Send that to Mike," Wade said, laughing.

Bibby averaged 0.5 points in first-quarter appearances this season. That was before scoring eight in the opening minutes of Game 5, including a jumper over Wade that gave New York a quick 14-8 lead.

It was one of New York's few moments to enjoy. James had 13 points on only six field-goal attempts by halftime, Wade shook off a scoreless first quarter with 12 in the second, and Miami went into the break leading 55-44.

The margin was less than 10 points for only 90 seconds of the third quarter. Stoudemire went to the bench with his fifth foul with 6:41 left in the third, and Miami went on an 11-2 spurt not long after that all but sealed the outcome. It was 67-58 when Fields made two free throws with 4:49 left in the quarter – and then the Heat's "Big Three" needed just 3 minutes to blow the game open.

Bosh and Wade combined for six points in that flurry, James the other five, including a 21-footer with 1:29 left to put Miami up 78-60.

For the Knicks, it was the 12th straight season without a playoff-series victory, extending the second-longest drought in franchise history. The last time New York advanced in the postseason came at Miami's expense in 2000 in the East semifinals.

Of the now five Heat-Knicks playoff matchups, this was the first not to be decided in an ultimate game.

New York's season started with great expectations. Not long after the lockout ended the Knicks acquired Chandler from Dallas, a move made possible by using the amnesty clause on Chauncey Billups.

Those moves were expected. Just about everything else that happened was not.

From the firing of coach Mike D'Antoni to the emergence of Jeremy Lin before he was sidelined after knee surgery, the Knicks had a roller-coaster ride. Interim coach Mike Woodson went 18-6 down the stretch of the regular season, giving the Knicks plenty of hope for pulling off a playoff upset.

Didn't happen. The Knicks wound up ending what was an NBA-record 13-game playoff losing streak by taking Game 4, and that was about it.

Rookie guard Iman Shumpert was lost in the third quarter of Game 1 to a torn knee ligament, Stoudemire sliced his left hand after taking out his frustrations on a metal-and-glass fire extinguisher case after a Game 2 loss, and Baron Davis shredded his knee so badly in Game 4 that he is expected to be out a year – at least.

Notes: Miami went 7-1 against the Knicks this season, including playoffs. The Heat won three of four games against Indiana this season. ... James had seven points, five assists and zero field goals in the first quarter. Only two other players (Billups in 2007 and Jerryd Bayless in 2011, both in fourth quarters) had done that in any quarter since James entered the league, according to STATS LLC. ... Bibby played more than half a game for only the fourth time this season. ... Rapper Rick Ross was among those courtside.

Well, they say if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Well, guess who couldn't take the heat: the KNICKS! ;-)

I said it after Game 1 I will say it again. The NBA is an absolute JOKE. The officiating last night was despicable and David Stern should be embarrased that this was on national TV. Is it a foul EVERYTIME Wade or Lebron leaves their feet on a drive to the basket??!!! No matter what?! How many times do I have to watch the refs call ticky-tack fouls on every play for the Heat but then watch Carmelo get butchered and no whistle? Did you see the dunk Amare had on Battier? He got hacked but NO WHISTLE. And not only do the Heat get every call I have to watch lebron CRY on every play, complaining to the refs. What a joke, it is so obvious David Stern wants Lebron to get his ring. You think Donaghy was the only crooked ref controlling the outcomes of games with biased officiating??!! Pleae don't tell me you fell for the BS Stern told you that Donaghy was the ONLY ref who did that. The refs control this game, if they want you to win they will make sure of it. They have to much power over the outcome.

I have to root for OKC now and the best player in basketball Kevin Durant, a real man who doesn't cry and moan like Lebron does, who wants to take the last shot, not like Lebron who would rather Wade take it.

Yeah, yeah, yeah......whatever! Just go sulk in a corner until next year. :)

Actually it's legit. Now I don't think that is the reason the Knicks lost the series, but to deny the Heat got calls is idiotic. James can complain and no T. But refs were quick with them on the Knicks.

Again that isn't why the Knicks lost, but the Heat got way more calls. It's a fact

Knick fans should secretly root for the Heat now. Lebron and company showed their team the utmost respect with the "gentleman's sweep" #TBJ (4-1) let em down easy. NKY is and will be a dangerous team to contend with once a team leader emerges (it could have easily been BD). I would say that Stat is the Alpha on the team. I hope that J Lin is traded if Woodson stays because I don't think Woodson will construct an offense that utilizes his talents. Perhaps Lin could be reunited with Dantoni on another team or play for a coach who likes to operate with a point guard. Woodson is the best coach for Melo right now the way that Melo likes to play but they need to find a coach that will develop Melo's defense and skill level at facilitating the ball. I hope by some miracle NKY can figure it out so my Heat can beat up a good NYK team next year.

The Heat manhandled the Knicks, but at the same time, there was no need for this series to be this close. They were tripping over themselves to win. Boston looks dangerous before we start talking about OKC/Spurs/Lakers.

Maybe if the refs gave us a chance, but no, Stern wants LeCon toget his ring.

There were terrible calls on both sides. It wasn't THAT close.

A team goes a lowly .067 in playoff winning percentage over the past decade or so....has a near comical parade of failed big name player combinations....makes an instant megastar out of a novelty ethnic player....it's unsophisticated front running fans consider it a major team over the years with 2 measly titles in 65 seasons......let me present " the media's team"...over exposeed qand underachiving - the flailing, failing ultimately boring NY Knicks!

.067 playoff winning percentage, playing the eventual champ or runnerup every time. The media made a star out of Lin.Would have won more titles if not for having to go up against the great Michael Jordan those years.
10:59 AM on 05/10/2012
BS. The media made Lin into a "legend" but Lin made himself into a star -- quite deservedly so.

MJ has single handedly prevented championships for some of the arguably best ever. Stockton, Malone, Barkley, Ewing, Miller and Payton. If Jordan didnt' retire, you would have been able to put the likes of Oljawuan and Drexler on that list as well.

To me, this is the most ridiculous stat of Jordan's career.

It's okay. It's okay. I'll take my dysfunctional Knicks any day over LeBron any day!

Miami might have eliminated a wounded Knicks team, but Heat fans cannot be happy with their play so far in the playoffs. I'm not sure how it will go against Indiana... But if the Heat meet the Celtics in the Eastern Conference series, I can see Boston beating them. Miami seems to think the Championship is already their's. Boston might have something to say about that. And what's up with not playing James Jones???

James Jones doesn't D up as well as the other 3 point specialist. Yes, you're right though, as a Heat fan I must admit that Miami's bench is shallow. And no, I must respectfully disagree with the assertion that we're taking ANYONE for granted. Professional basketball is crazy man, a so-so team can get hot and the momentum can take them over the top before you can blink an eye. As far as teams like Boston and San Antonio goes, I believe that their age will start to show as we go deeper into the playoffs. Anyway, with or without my beloved Heat, the Finals will be off the hook.

I agree. After being humiliated by the Mavs (byebye) last year, I don't feel like the Heat are taking anyone for granted. Boston is playing their collective heart out, there will always be challenges, but the Heat are playing so much more as a team than last year! Go Heat!

I attended every Pacers game this year and let me tell ya, they are deeper than the Heat. They have 5 guys comin' off the bench who could start on just abot any team in the NBA. The 2 big guys in the middle (Hibbet/West) will make it hard for the Heat to score inside. No easy baskets in this series.
