Kobayashi Coffee Stunt: Competitive Eating Legend Downs 42 Cups Of Joe (VIDEO)

Kobayashi Coffee

Those that follow the competitive eating circuit know that Takeru Kobayashi is a serious contender when it comes to eating large amounts of food in short periods of time. (This is despite his various kerfuffles with the Major League Eating organization).

His newest stunt, in partnership with Eight O'Clock Coffee and comedian Jim Breuer, is right up there with some of his other epic food accomplishments such as eating 337 wings or eating a ton of hot dogs in 10 minutes. In the clip below, he drinks FORTY TWO cups of coffee in just a couple of minutes. The clip feels a little orchestrated, and is clearly meant as PR for Eight O'Clock Coffee, but Kobayashi still manages to pull off yet another crazy feat.

Kobayashi shows no signs of being full, or being overly caffeinated for that matter. We just can't help but wonder what happened after they turned the camera off...

Sixteen years ago Mary Allen Lindemann and Alan Spear opened this tiny coffee shop in Portland, Maine with the idea of building a place for the community. Over the years, the shop has grown from their original Congress Street location to three other shops and a micro roaster where they process all their beans. But despite their mini-expansion, the independent store remains homey and popular for Mainers as they continue to serve the community one cup of Fore Street coffee at a time.

I hope it was decaf. I know how jittery I get after just two cups...

When he was drinking the cups from the round table, there were only one or two he actually finished. 42 sips of coffee is more like it.

He did appear to be actually drinking the pots of coffee, though.

Kobayashi must have an exceptional metabolism. An ordinary man will be "caffein drunk" after drinking that many cups of coffee.

I love to watch Kobayashi. It fascinates me how such a tiny guy can eat all that food. I would love to see him with his own show like Man vs Food. I know he would win every time.

I faved you -- and then, I went to read some references and do some math.

An average coffee has about 20 milligrams of caffeine per fluid ounce.

Kobayashi drank 42 cups. Those cups look pretty small, I'm guessing 4 ounces. So he ingested about 4 x 42 x 20 = 3,360 milligrams of caffeine.

Hey, look, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Psychiatric Disorders has a section on caffeine overdose (quoted at http://coffeefaq.com/site/node/12):

"The LD_50 of caffeine (that is the lethal dosage reported to kill 50% of the population) is estimated at 10 grams for oral administration. As it is usually the case, lethal dosage varies from individual to individual according to weight. Ingestion of 150mg/kg of caffeine seems to be the LD_50 for all people. That is, people weighting 50 kilos have an LD_50 of approx. 7.5 grams, people weighting 80 kilos have an LD_50 of about 12 grams. In cups of coffee the LD_50 varies from 50 to 200 cups of coffee."

Kobayashi's a pretty lightweight guy. I'd say he hit half the dosage that was 50% likely to kill him.

People who engage in gluttony are not "champions." They are gluttons and should be publicly shamed.

No one should be publicly shamed. This isn't medieval England.

I disagree. People who act irresponsibly in a way that influences the behavior of others in negative ways (a glutton being touted as a champion during a time of rapidly rising obesity) certainly should be open to public censure and ridicule.

That's a pretty sick way of messing up with your nervous system. All the competitive eating/drinking events should be banned. So stupid.
