  In August 2011, Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries were married in an estimated <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/kim-kardashians-wedding-cost-by-the-numbers-227691" target="_hplink">$6 million wedding</a>, though Kardashian's wedding planner has said that the <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/kim-kardashians-wedding-cost-by-the-numbers-227691" target="_hplink">reality star received discounts</a> from vendors. The couple separated in October after 72 days of marriage.

• Liza Minnelli & David Gest: $3.5 million

  Liza Minnelli and David Gest reportedly spent <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/story/2011-11-01/cost-of-celebrity-weddings/51019708/1" target="_hplink">$3.5 million</a> on their March 2002 wedding, which featured a twelve-layer wedding cake and performance by Tony Bennett. The couple divorced in July 2003 after a year of marriage.

• Elizabeth Taylor & Larry Fortensky: $2 million

  Elizabeth Taylor and Larry Fortensky were married in a <a href="http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20111095,00.html" target="_hplink">$2 million</a> celebration in 1991, though <a href="http://www.ivillage.com/elizabeth-taylors-ex-husband-larry-fortensky-gives-last-interview/1-a-343349" target="_hplink">they split in 1996</a> after five years of marriage.

• Paul McCartney & Heather Mills: $3 million

  Paul McCartney and Heather Mills' June 2002 wedding cost an estimated <a href="http://www.forbes.com/2007/07/12/celebrity-media-weddings-biz-media-cz_lg_ts_0712celebweddings_slide_20.html?thisSpeed=30000" target="_hplink">$3 million</a>. They split in May 2006.

• Elizabeth Hurley & Arun Nayar: $2.5 million

  Elizabeth Hurley and Arun Nayar reportedly spent <a href="http://www.elistmania.com/juice/10_most_expensive_weddings/ http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20061684,00.html" target="_hplink">$2.5 million</a> on their week-long wedding in 2007. Hurley filed for divorce in 2011 after four years of marriage.

This is ridiculous and sad, money that could be use to feed the hunger, set up a low income clinic, help restore a community, donate to "Wheels on Meals", help the Humane society for animals and many other thing to do with all that money. So sad.

I remember when Johnny Carson's was one of the biggest divorce settlements at the time. It didn't make this Top 10 list.
NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon's ex-wife went for a big bundle but Jeff said that she didn't deserve half as it wasn't her butt in the racecar risking her life out there on the track and the judge agreed. She wasn't popular in the pits or motorhome lot either as the other racer's wives didn't like her either.

Years and years ago, I used to work a coffee cart in a family law court house. It was the most interesting work ever only because of the divorce arguments I would hear in the hallway. I can't even tell you how many people I would hear arguing over their Nintendos. Sometimes it would be furniture, etc, but the Nintendos always came up. Always. Seems kind of funny in comparison to the above settlements!

That is a disgustingly obscene amount of money. If ever there was a good reason to never get married it is the intrusive and evil laws and governments that make this possible. It seems to me that there is so much incredible government intrusiveness and legal extremism that it makes having a family and just living a regular, calm and down to earth life an impossibility in this country. What a friggin nightmare. Marriage and family in the United States seems to be legally prohibitive. What a harsh and punitive society this has become. Scary.
