Maya Painting At Xultun, Guatemala: Glyphs Describe Mayan Calendar But Not End Of World (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: 05/10/2012 2:21 pm Updated: 05/11/2012 4:03 pm

"For the first time we get to see what may be actual records kept by a scribe, whose job was to be official record keeper of a Maya community. It's like an episode of TV's 'Big Bang Theory,' a geek math problem and they're painting on the wall. They seem to be using it like a blackboard."

That's Boston University archaeologist William Saturno talking about a new excavation of an ancient Mayan structure hidden in a rain forest in Guatemala's Peten region, according to a written statement released by the National Geographic Society. The society supported the excavation, which Saturno led.

The walls of the structure, believed to be a house, are adorned with unique red and black glyphs unlike those seen at other Maya sites, according to the statement.

"We've never seen anything like it," David Stuart, professor of Mesoamerican art and writing at the University of Texas-Austin, said in the statement. He deciphered the glyphs.

Some of the glyphs relate to various Mayan calendars. But guess what: there's no sign from the glyphs that the Mayans believed the world would end in 2012--only that the world would begin a new cycle.

"It's like the odometer of a car, with the Maya calendar rolling over from the 120,000s to 130,000," Anthony F. Aveni, professor of astronomy and anthropology at Colgate University, said in the statement. "The car gets a step closer to the junkyard as the numbers turn over; the Maya just start over."

The structure is part of a region called Xultun, the largest Mayan site yet to be fully investigated by archaeologists. It was first spotted in 2010, according to the statement.

The discovery of the glyphs is reported in the June issue of "National Geographic" and in the May 11 issue of the journal "Science."

  • Three male figures, seated and painted in black. The men, wearing only white loincloths and medallions around their necks and a head dress bearing another medallion and a single feather, were uncovered on the ruined house's west wall. The painting recreates the design and colors of the original Maya mural. Excavation and preservation of the site were supported by the National Geographic Society. Painting by Heather Hurst

  • A Maya king, seated and wearing an elaborate head dress of blue feathers, adorns the north wall of the ruined house discovered at the Maya site of Xultún. An attendant, at right, leans out from behind the king's head dress. The painting by artist Heather Hurst recreates the design and colors of the original Maya artwork at the site. • A vibrant orange figure, kneeling in front of the king on the ruined house's north wall, is labeled "Younger Brother Obsidian," a curious title seldom seen in Maya text. The man is holding a writing instrument, which may indicate he was a scribe. The painting recreates the design and colors of the figure in the original Maya mural. Excavation and preservation of the site were supported by the National Geographic Society. Painting by Heather Hurst

  • Four long numbers on the north wall of the ruined house relate to the Maya calendar and computations about the moon, sun and possibly Venus and Mars; the dates may stretch some 7,000 years into the future. These are the first calculations Maya archaeologists have found that seem to tabulate all of these cycles in this way. Although they all involve common multiples of key calendrical and astronomical cycles, the exact significance of these particular spans of time is not known. • The painted figure of a man -- possibly a scribe who once lived in the house built by the ancient Maya -- is illuminated through a doorway to the dwelling, in northeastern Guatemala. The structure represents the first Maya house found to contain artwork on its walls. The research is supported by the National Geographic Society. Photo by Tyrone Turner © 2012 National Geographic

  • Conservator Angelyn Bass cleans and stabilizes the surface of a wall of a Maya house that dates to the 9th century A.D. The figure of a man who may have been the town scribe appears on the wall to her left. Excavation and preservation of the site were supported by the National Geographic Society. • Never-before-seen artwork -- the first to be found on walls of a Maya house -- adorn the dwelling in the ruined city of Xultún. The figure at left is one of three men on the house's west wall who are painted in black and wear identical costumes. • Archaeologist William Saturno of Boston University carefully uncovers art and writings left by the Maya some 1,200 years ago. The art and other symbols on the walls may have been records kept by a scribe, Saturno theorizes. The idea that Mayans predicted the end of the World was never based on the facts presented by Mayan archaeological finds, it was created by contemporary humans.

The only thing that can be factually stated is that the Mayans created an elaborate calendar system, which positions the end of their Great Year at around December 21 2012. Any attempt to find meaning in this date is entirely subjective and unprovable.

While precession is real, there is as of yet no evidence that it portends changes.

Some have suggested that the Mayans were one of the lost tribes of Israel. I guess someone would have to be very familiar with ancient Judaism to be able to suppose something like that. Anybody here an expert on ancient Judaism or the ten lost tribes?

Assyria and Babylon moved many groups around their empires, it was a customary way to obtain advantage in the various areas they took over, if you weren't going to just put them all to the sword.
The ancient Jewish diaspora was pretty widespread, probably the people of the lost tribes ended up all over the Mideast and Mediterranean. The Mayans? They don't look the part, and their language is very different, they don't have the Hebrew alphabet, it would be tough to cross the Atlantic in those days, although one must never say never.

Well put. Thanks.

You forgot the most important trait to base lineage on: genetics. Jews have a genetic marker which is very well preserved, if it is present in Mayan genes, I would have expected it to be found already.

"there's no sign from the glyphs that the Mayans believed the world would end in 2012--only that the world would begin a new cycle."

This is corroborated when one notes the precessional cycle of the stars.

"The approximate 2150 years for each age corresponds to the average time it takes for the Vernal Equinox to move from one constellation of the zodiac into the next. This can be computed by dividing the Earth's 25,800 year gyroscopic precession period by twelve, the number of Zodiac constellations used by astrologers."

We are entering the mythical Age of Aquarius, moving out of the Age of Pisces, signified by the fish (Christians, take note) . According to astrological mysticism, there will be unusual harmony and understanding in the world. Those who follow that belief system see it as a turning point in human consciousness in which balance is restored by consciously moving beyond the physical body.

The Mayans, stargazers that they were, knew of these cycles and that such events foretold change, not necessarily turmoil...

.. jest you may, but astonomical progression is true. -- only when pople decided this observable natural phenonena must MEAN something, was astrology born!

Both astronomy and astrology are based upon the serious observation of celestial movement/events over time . .I'm more in awe of how the Mayans figured this all out! I guess it shows what pople can accomplish if they don;t tweet, post to Facebook, and game constantly! Just saying. . . ;)

No, the Mayans had never heard of Pisces or Aquarius. And such events foretell nothing. Change is a constant.

Man, you've got at least another 6,000 years to watch Dancing with The Stars and American Idol. Buck up brother. The effects of those two shows alone will drive you completely insane long before you have to end it all

Now really, this should have been the simplest and most rational conclusion. There had never been anything suggesting the world would end, it was just some loony looking for attention that started the whole mess.

So, what's the record of the doomsday prediction (including the numerous "Jesus is coming" goofs so far? 0-12, 0-46, 0-157, 0-7012? I'm not sure how many times they've been wrong (athough I do know that they've always been wrong), but I am sure how many times they've been right, a solid zero. I wonder if these idiots call "on it's rim" instead of heads or tails when they make a coin toss.
11:27 AM on 05/21/2012
That's cause Hollywood put the idea in their heads.

The entertainment industry pretty much determines all on their own what people want or are afraid of, which is why there are right now thousands of people who believe they are vampires or werewolves, or believe that the planet has been taken over by meta-morphing lizard monsters.

In all fairness, most websites which I came across never claimed 2012 would be the end of the world, just that it was a turning point for human evolution.

Don't worry about waiting too long for the next doomsday. Some kooks will be saying that Jesus is on his way anytime now. In fact Jack and Rexella van Idiot are already telling anybosy who is ignorant enough to listen to them that he'll be here before Jack passes away, and Jack doesn't look like he'll be around for much longer. Then again, Ernest Angely looked like he had one foot in the grave when I was thirteen, and he's still around.

Isn't it ridiculous how some people are so self-deluded as to think the end of the world pertains directly to their existence? It's almost as if their telling you that THEY are the truth, the way and the light. Can man be so arrogant? (don't answer that question). But for those sheeple that you call 'ignorants' there must be a wolf to lead them.. relative isn't just a kin.
