Sony Q1 2012: More Awful Losses Blamed On Flooding, Earthquake, Tsunami And More

By YURI KAGEYAMA 05/10/12 02:01 PM ET AP

Sony Q1 2012

TOKYO — Sony Corp. racked up a record annual loss of 457 billion yen ($5.7 billion) in its fourth straight year of red ink as the once-glorious maker of the Walkman and PlayStation struggles toward a turnaround under a new president.

The electronics and entertainment company, which also makes "Spider-Man" movies, reported Thursday a loss of 255 billion yen ($3.2 billion) for the January-March period – its fifth straight quarterly net loss to round out a fiscal year that was the worst in its 66-year corporate history.

The latest red ink was worse than 1995, which followed Sony's ambitious but disastrous purchase of Hollywood studio Columbia Pictures.

Sony's recent troubles were worsened by factory and supplier damage in northeastern Japan, ravaged by the earthquake and tsunami last year. Sony also suffered production disruptions from the flooding in Thailand.

Quarterly sales inched up 1.2 percent on-year to 1.6 trillion yen ($20 billion). Annual sales plunged nearly 10 percent to 6.5 trillion yen ($81 billion), as unit sales slipped in flat-panel TVs, video and digital cameras, game machines and personal computers.

Sony has bled money for eight straight years in its core TV business, bashed by competition from Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea and other Asian rivals.

And consumers are flocking to products from Apple Inc. like the iPhone and iPad instead of Sony gadgets.

A soaring yen that erodes the overseas earnings of Japanese exporters like Sony has also added to the damage.

Sony is aiming for a comeback under Kazuo Hirai, appointed president last month, who has headed the gaming division and built his career in the U.S.

Sony forecast a return to profit for the fiscal year through March 2013 at 30 billion yen ($375 million), banking on the growing smartphone and tablet business, as well as a recovery from last year's disasters.

Last month, Hirai said the company will cut 10,000 jobs, or about 6 percent of its global work force, and turn a profit in TVs in the next two years.

The job cuts come on top of a couple of rounds under Hirai's predecessor, Welsh-born Howard Stringer, who remains chairman and was the first foreigner to head Sony.

Yasunori Tateishi, author of "Farewell Our Sony," believes the long-sought boon Sony executives promised from exploiting its electronics and entertainment operations has been illusive.

He said Sony was in a bind because, even when its electronics segment fared well, its results would be pulled down by entertainment problems – or the other way around.

"Synergy is something that might happen, but it's not something a company should go after," he said. "It instead turns into an obstacle."

Sony had recorded a 260 billion yen loss the previous fiscal year.

The latest results were better than the 520 billion yen ($6.5 billion) annual loss the Tokyo-based company had projected. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had estimated a more optimistic 430 billion yen ($5.3 billion) loss.

Sony said sales improved in its film business, lifted by TV shows it produced and home video sales of movies, but profits fell slightly, despite the popularity of "The Smurfs" and "Bad Teacher," offsetting the failure of "Arthur Christmas."

Sales and profit both dropped in its music business. Best-sellers included Adele's "21" and Beyonce's "4."

Chief Financial Officer Masaru Kato said fixing the electronics business remains critical, as revenue improves in entertainment this year with "The Amazing Spider-Man," "Men in Black 3" and the new James Bond film "Skyfall," and music downloads start to make up for dropping CD sales.

"This year remains crucial for a recovery in our electronics business," Kato said, adding that the effort to reduce TV business losses was on track. "A fifth straight year of losses should never be tolerated."

Analysts say it remains to be seen whether Hirai can steer Sony's turnaround.

Prices come down so fast that the initial year or so – when an innovative product is taking off – is crucial. Sony fell behind when digital music players and flat TVs became hits.

Tateishi, the author, says Sony still has the lead in digital broadcasting, 3-D camcorders and other imagery technology and should pioneer new categories of products, if it hopes to survive.

Sony shares, which have lost about half their value over the past year, dipped 1.2 percent to 1,213 yen in Tokyo. Trading ended shortly before earnings were announced.

In the 1980's, the pundits were terrified that Sony was going to take over the world.

Oops!

In the 1970's, there was a "global freezing" scare. The scientists thought perhaps the Earth was getting colder.

But, without 24 cable news and the internet, such stories came and went. Wish that were the case today.

First of all, there are apples, than there are oranges.

Wood has a lot to do with it also.

But, why are you comparing purple to 1.

Back in the 1970s some scientists were making predictions of a mini ice age, but their views were not widely accepted, very much different than the consensus view now as the warming trend is clearly supported by data.

Here's where Sony started to lose it: the Sony Memory Stick Walkman – NW-MS7.

Read the section on "checking in" and "checking out" songs. And you thought Apple was a control freak.

Paying ANYONE $60 million for 3 albums probably isn't doing Sony much good either. They are their own tsunami.

The PS3 is a far superior product to the xbox and the wii. Anyone who says differently is a fanboy.

did you enjoy getting your account hacked twice? and far superior to wii in graphics not sales The xbox is easier to make games for. Also Sony doesn't have near the amount of first party content as nintendo. Uncharted is great and all pushing x is fun i suppose. And now the Wii U will be far superior to the ps3(ps3 only plays 720p games unlike the Wii U which will play 1080p games natively) Oh and if you want superior games build a pc
07:12 PM on 05/10/2012
Um I am pretty sure the PS3 plays 1080P native games as u have a few. I would be more interested in rendered triangles at the same resolution. PCs being the latest chips will beat all 3 of the consoles.

nothing screams fangirl like saying something is far superior and then calling anybody who disagrees with you a fanboy. Xbox is way more easy to program for.(skyrim) Nintendo has sold almost double that of the PS3 and has more first party support, Uncharted you just push x five billion times and then watch a cut scene . Modern gaming PC have it over ps3's what 7-8 year old tech. In fact sony itself is no longer pursuing its own tech in and is going with more traditional graphics cards for its next gen system. Also sony has been hacked twice. I guess you have a blu ray player but who cares when netflix and other companies like it are taking over fisical media.

"Synergy is something that might happen, but it's not something a company should go after..." And therein lies the problem. Each of Sony's divisions is like a separate company and refuses to cooperate with any other division. Sony could have done an iPod like device long before Apple did, except the entertainment division wouldn't cooperate with the hardware division and Sony wasn't willing to engage other distributors to create an iTunes like store. So, today Apple owns the digital music business and Sony is going broke.
07:16 PM on 05/10/2012
Yes good point it was easier for an outsider, Apple, to say here's how it is take it or leave it. Two independent business units can say no to one another but cannot engage the enemy to force the others hand.

When the next gen systems came out I bought all of them. My wii still works fine and has never had any issues. But both my xbox360 and my PS3 crapped the bed within a month of each other. Microsoft replaced my xbox with a brand new one for free, and then extended the warranty another year. They replaced in three more times, each time extending the warranty and picking up the tab for shipping, and giving me a free month of xbox live gold membership. Sony on the other hand gave me two options. Get a replacement that was half the gigs, and had no backwards compatibility (I had already bought about 10 PS1 and PS2 games at that point), or pay them $150 to fix their mistake. At that point I traded in all my games and kissed off Playstation. Then Sony went and sent letters to MY government trying to convince them to take away MY freedoms by passing SOPA. Every American should boycott Sony, and I hope this is the final nail in the coffin for those clown shoes. Not even Spiderman can save them now.

Typical of large corporate grown outfits, the company has become afraid of new ventures and lacks imagination in the face of routine adversity. It is the historical fate of all such massive bureaucratic organizations. They grow on agressive, risk taking strategies, reach the smooth bell curve's top, establishing a bureaucracy, become careful, timorous and starts the down side of the bell curve.

As a Sony alum, this is so sad to hear, I was once very proud to have been a Sony rep. But a fish rots from the head down.

Absolutely the worst management corps possible for a large global company. Fear ruled management. Managers had no training or matriculation for advancement, and no authority. The sales team had a saying "the nail that sticks out from the board will be nailed down" in other words no criticism, no innovation, no outside the stale routine ideas tolerated. Short -sighted planning by the quarter, Poorly planned product launches, tepid marketing, umdermanned campaigns, poor product managment, "fiefdoms infighting and not communicating among the many "silos' within the ocmpany. It is really more like 20 small companies that talk more with their competition than among themselves.

Too bad, because a lot of great, talented, and intelligent people work for Sony and they want to give the public good products and service. a lot of lip-service to "customer-centric" but in practice it's about wall street centric, and that's a whole 'nother hornets nest.

But the higher up you go in Sony, the more arrogant the attitude is. "Hey we're Sony! people are lucky to be able to buy form us! screw them if they don't realize that!" And they REALLY believe it! Via Con Dios Sony colleagues

the ps vita was a terrible idea. the era of dedicated portable game systems is almost over. they are being replaced by smartphones and tablets that offer convergence such as not just a game system but a phone, surf the net etc. people need those things. a dedicated portable game system (and very expensive at that.) with horribly over priced memory cards and games (angry birds cost 1 buck as an app for smartphones but 15 bucks for vita) is a death sentence.
Nintendo is in deep doo-doo as well since they have essentially rejected convergence from day one. the day of these dedicated hand-helds are pretty much done already.

wasn't there a phone not too long ago that did what you're saying? It was a better gaming system than a phone and predates all tablets and I'm pretty sure all smartphones, and it failed miserably. Engage or something? Regardless Sony lost me as a customer years ago when they flubbed the PS3
