MOUNT SALAK, Indonesia -- Search teams who scaled a volcano's steep slopes found at least 12 bodies Friday near the wreckage of a Russian-made jetliner that crashed in Indonesia during a demonstration flight for potential buyers, an official said.

All 45 aboard the Sukhoi Superjet-100 that crashed Wednesday are feared dead.

"Today we have discovered 12 victims, all dead," Rear Marshal Daryatmo, head of the national search and rescue agency, told reporters Friday.

Many of the bodies found Friday had been torn apart in the crash, said Lt. Col. Oni Juniato of the Indonesian marines, whose search team found eight corpses before returning to base camp further down the mountain.

"We see many other victims ... but the ravines and steep cliffs prevent us from reaching them," Junianto said in a statement.

Local television showed what appeared to be the plane's tail with the blue-and-white Sukhoi logo, part of a wing and bits of twisted metal scattered along the slope like confetti.

About 85 soldiers, police and volunteers used ropes to climb up to the wreckage through jungle on the near-vertical slopes of Mount Salak, search and rescue agency spokesman Gagah Prakoso said by telephone.

Thick fog and the mountain's jagged slopes kept helicopters from landing at the crash site, so the bodies remained there along with the search teams.

The soldiers, police and volunteers fashioned a landing area by hacking down trees, but Prakoso said the helicopters were recalled to Jakarta late Friday because the fog limited visibility to only about 5 meters (15 feet).

The jetliner slammed into the dormant volcano at nearly 800 kph (480 mph) during drizzle. Russian and French investigators have joined the investigation into the cause.

The Superjet-100 is Russia's first new model of passenger jet since the fall of the Soviet Union two decades ago and was intended to help resurrect its aerospace industry.

The ill-fated Superjet was carrying representatives from local airlines and journalists on what was supposed to be a 50-minute demonstration flight. Just 21 minutes after takeoff from a Jakarta airfield, the Russian pilot and co-pilot asked for permission to drop from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet (3,000 meters to 1,800 meters). They gave no explanation, disappearing from the radar immediately afterward.

It was not clear why the crew asked to shift course, especially since they were so close to the 7,000-foot (2,200-meter) volcano, or whether they got an OK, officials have said.

Communication tapes will be reviewed as part of the investigation, but it's unlikely they will be released to the public any time soon.

Did they find that many at the site of the crash at the Pentagon?
Just asking.

The plane that hit the Pentagon had tanks full of the stuff we use to make chemtrails - and who knows how hot THAT stuff burns?

According to the TV news reports I saw, it was so hot that a computer monitor in an office exposed to the world by the Pentagon crash didn't have a scratch. It was still right there on an undamaged desk -- more or less what you see after a wrecking crew takes out a wall in condemned building. No sign of fire, no melted plastic or singed furniture. I saw an office worker crack a monitor like that with a clumsy elbow; an airliner crashing two feet away could conceivably have left that slice of office undamaged, but I wouldn't bet my last unemployment check on it.

Why do you think the plane that hit the Pentagon had 'stuff... to make chemtrails?' I hadn't heard or read that? My question is simple: Did they find more bodies -- confirmed by someone outside the spookaucracy -- at the Pentagon than they did at this extremely remote crash site? I don't know so I'm asking.

Russia was "the worst" Country in the World for Air Travel in 2011 (WSJ). Over 50 Engineers on the "100" had bogus degrees.

I have read most of the commnets below. Most add something to the plane crash. I wish for the passengers they knew nothing was wrong. I send my heartfelt sorrow for the families.

Super planes should have super pilots, who in there right mind would descend to 6,000 feet in bad weather with 7,000 foot mountains, not very smart and unfortunately in aviation they are all good pilots until they become a bad one, and there is no second chance....

How awful. My condolences to the families of all on board. I can't imagine the horror that they are going through, knowing that their loved ones were on this plane, knowing it crashed, and knowing that their bodies are strewn about waiting to be recovered. By the looks of it, I seriously doubt that there were any survivors. My heart goes out to them all, especially the children.

Tell you this, getting smashed into the side of a mountain is definitely a rough way to go.

One wonders how a speed of 480 mph was determined when the aircraft was not in radar contact. Perhaps that was its speed when radar contact was lost. In this country, and I think the rest of the world, the maximum allowable airspeed beow 10,000 ft altitude is 250 knots (288 mph). Something's not right here.
09:53 AM on 05/12/2012
Hmm, a demo flight, media, airline personnel, and potential customers as passengers. I would guess the pilot or someone within authority wanted a low altitude flight so people on board could be impressed with the landscape below. At 500mph obstacles come up fast as if out of nowhere. I believe it will be reported as pilot error.

Bad weather and high terrain is a bad combination. Possibly a CFIT (controlled flight into terrain). His charts would have shown the minimum safe altitude in that sector - not sure why he deliberately descended below it.

Let's see, this would be Aeroflot, right? Performance might be OK but I question reliability. I've been to Russia and thru Moscow and you can't but help notice all the Aeroflot jets lining the taxiways. But you could see through the engine nacelles as there were no engines installed. One must assume they had been removed for lack of spare parts.

It was not Aeroflot. It was a demonstration aircraft owned and operated by the manufacturer, Sukhoi. Further, this accident has nothing to do with the ability to obtain or the availability of parts for Aeroflot's fleet of aircraft. Have you considered that perhaps what you saw was the main maintenance facility for Aeroflot? Perhaps the engines had been removed for overhaul or repair. Perhaps the aircraft you saw had reached their maximum number of flight hours and were in the process of being retired. Perhaps you are right and Aeroflot has a large number of aircraft not in flying status for some other reason. It's easy to speculate.

Perhaps what he really wanted to say but felt that perhaps he should take another route in trying to perhaps say what the problem is that perhaps the Russian Aero industry is Kaput.

You can see places like that in many many parts of the world. Here in the USA you've seen the Mojave Desert and Davis Monthan Air Force Base depot, no?

Considering the circumstances, referring to this new Russian aircraft a "Superjet" seems a little disingenuous.

No more so than Boeing calling one of theirs a "767" or Lockheed calling a P-3 an "Orion."
