Phil Bryant, Mississippi Governor, Responds To North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue's Jab

JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant said Friday it was "petty" for North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue to insult Mississippi while bemoaning that voters in her state approved a ballot measure banning same-sex marriage.

Bryant, a Republican who became governor in January, said he intends to write to Perdue about her comments. She is a Democrat who isn't seeking a second term.

Perdue was in Greenville, N.C., on Friday when she responded to questions from WITN-TV in Washington. She said she was disappointed voters in her state on Tuesday approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage as only between a man and a woman.

"People around the country are watching us and they're really confused, to have been such a progressive, forward-thinking, economically driven state that invested in education and that stood up for the civil rights of people, including the civil rights marches back in the `50's and `60's and `70's," Perdue said. "Folks are saying what in the world is going on in North Carolina. We look like Mississippi."

In Jackson, Miss., Bryant said Perdue's comments were "very disappointing."

"To be able to use Mississippi in a disparaging way on a popular vote in her own state is, I think, something that's certainly petty and something I think she will reflect on and hopefully apologize for those types of remarks," Bryant told reporters after an unrelated news conference in Jackson.

Messages left with spokespeople for Perdue were not immediately returned Friday.

In the November 2004 general election, 86 percent of Mississippi voters approved an amendment banning same-sex marriage.

Bryant said he has met Perdue at National Governors Association meetings.

"She's a very nice lady," Bryant said. "It's just disappointing to be able to use Mississippi as she is in some way to disparage a popular vote in her own state. It's just very, very disappointing. And I think she'll regret that after she's had some time to reflect on it."

Bryant said in a written statement: "Apparently, North Carolina's voters are much more in line with Mississippi's traditional values on marriage than those of Gov. Perdue."

Mississippi's Republican lieutenant governor, Tate Reeves, and the head of the Mississippi Republican Party, Joe Nosef, both issued statements criticizing Perdue's comments.

"Thirty-two states have voted on the issue of defining marriage. Thirty-two states have voted in favor of traditional marriage," Nosef said. "Gov. Perdue is obviously out of touch with the voters of her own state and is trying to change the subject by attacking Mississippi. We are proud to stand with North Carolina and the majority of other states in our country who have supported traditional marriage."

Reeves did not mention same-sex marriage but said Mississippi has a better business climate than North Carolina.

"I would invite any North Carolina-based company wanting to move to a lower-taxed, less-regulated state to look at our business-friendly opportunities," Reeves said.

Dear Governor Bryant,

I apologize for pointing out Mississippi's regressive performance in the areas of education, women's health and immigration. I grieve for your state's lack of compassion and enlightenment, and of course for your lack of will to upgrade the skills of your citizens or embrace the needs of all minorities in your state. The citizens of North Carolina more recently have come to  Read More...

Mississippi does not have regressive history in education, civil rights, women's health or immigration issues. The hard working, intelligent and compassionate people of Mississippi have nothing to regret in their voting down same sex marriage. I only wish all the states would have the courage to do so, my state of California has struggled with this issue. Many of us here are not listened to and pushed aside by all the extreme Liberals now in power.

Perhaps Gov. Bryant you should be working to solve Mississippi's many real problems, then you would have no need to umbrage when someone simply tells it like it is?

The blue states should completely cut off the money these parasite red states suck in from us. There is no reason California taxpayers should be receiving 60 cents for every dollar they pay in tax. New York taxpayers receiving 70 cents for every dollar they pay, while Mississippi taxpayers get over 2 dollars for every 1 dollar they pay in. This needs to stop, and if Mississippians die in the gutter from lack of funds, so be it. Enough is enough.

I don't get it? Mississippi is and has been, the “Poster Child” of racism and bigotry, since time began......What in Gov. Beverly Perdue's comment does he deny? She is only pointing out the obvious. Not to lessen South Carolina's role in the history of Bigotry and violence against people that were born different in color, gender and sexual orientation.........The entire South, Mid West and a few Western states hold this distinction now! There are evil people everywhere. This is when the Supreme Court steps in and corrects the “wayward” states in our “United” Union under our great Constitution….

Did it even occur to Governor Bryant why Governor Perdue would reference Mississippi in her remarks? The reference actually makes a lot of sense.

The unemployment rae in nc is 9.8, the unemployment in Miss. is 9.4, what part don't you get, do not throw stones at people who work for a living and people who can't find a job. The liberals will never get it, no matter how hard they are hit on the head. this is the war of the week the democrtes are waging, since they have such a lousy record on everythging but blaming president bush.

Your unemployment rates may have been affected by the efficiency of your education system. Your education system's efficiency may have been affected by your tax base. Your tax base may have been affected by the political choices made by the dominant political party. Hint: it begins with "R"...

Only 149 years ago the blood of Mississippi boys and blood of North Carolina boys flowed in the "sunken road" near Sharpsburg, Maryland. They had been shot full of holes by boys from New England. Both Mississippi and North Carolina were on the were on the wrong side of history then, as they are now.

If we keep this guy in the white house, we will all be living in states that resemble NC and Miss. It is an election time, why are we not hearing about the president changing only 3 weeks ago to his new policy of the week, while he has made it illegal to hold a sign against him when he rides arfound the country. He has removed our first admendment rights and you give a damn about 8 percent of the people and not the other 92 percent.
06:06 PM on 05/13/2012
I didn't know that "he has made it illegal to hold a sign against him when he rides arfound the country." This is a diminishing of our 1st ammendment rights. I remember when G.W. Bush was President, Cindy Sheehan was allowed to set up a makeshift camp in a ditch by the side of the road about three miles (5 km) from G.W.'s ranch. Only three miles. I quess now she couldn't do it at all. And yes, I give a damn when In 2007 the richest 1% of the American population owned 34.6% of the country's total wealth, and the next 19% owned 50.5%. Thus, the top 20% of Americans owned 85% of the country's wealth and the bottom 80% of the population owned 15%. So why do you give a damn for the 20 percent and not the other 80 percent?

Stop using the word traditional when describing bigoted views of marriage. Unless you mean a man selling his daughter to another man for land, station, or political gain, the original purpose of marriage. Religion was nothing but a convenient cover story for condoned sexual slavery.

agreed "traditional marriage" gave a man chattel rights over his wife and daughters. Not a very good model of marriage is it? They can keep their "traditional" marriage. It may have been good for Abraham but not for modern America.

Maybe thats how you are being tought in the liberal schools, but I got married because I love my wife and wanted to have children and raise them with some morals. seual slavery is the welfare people with 8 kids and no fathers.

How about the muslims that the presidents father had 5 kids besides his other born out of wedlock.

Why do you define any school as "liberal" or "conservative"? Because of what you've been told, not from what you've personally experienced. A school is where, ideally, a person is taught to think critically and define values for themselves. If you really cared for education, your state wouldn't constantly find itself at the very bottom of the scholastic ladder year in and year out. A bigot is a bigot, no matter what state they call home, but it's also obvious that the least educated people are the most bigotted.

I'm for marriage equality and was disappointed in the vote outcome in NC. (I'm a former NC resident--an initially skeptical relocated northerner--who grew to love the state.) But Gov. Perdue's anti-Mississippi comment was uncalled for.

"Thirty-two states have voted on the issue of defining marriage. Thirty-two states have voted in favor of traditional marriage,"...and thirty-two states have decided that not everyone is created equal. Is this 2012 or 1812?
