Hummus Recipes: 10 Ways To Add New Flavors

If you're like us, you've probably eaten an entire bowl of hummus at one time or another -- it's just that good. Most consumers will buy hummus from the market, where it's available in many different flavors. But if you've ever made hummus at home, you know how easy it is to make -- it's just a combination of a few standard ingredients, starting with a can of chickpeas. But if you want to take your average hummus to the next level, you'll want to try some mix-ins.

See the slideshow for 10 ways you can reinvent hummus -- some ideas riff on traditional Middle Eastern flavors, like tahini or lemon, but others give hummus a Mediterranean flavor (sun-dried tomatoes or rosemary-infused oil) or even Mexican (chipotle peppers). For our base, we use a standard hummus recipe.

How could you not like chick peas (garbanzo) beans? They have a nutty taste and are wonderful. It may be the consistency of hummus you don't like--squashed. Try chick peas in a three or four bean salad made with red wine vinegar, olive oil, onion, green pepper, garlic, green beans, dark red kidney beans and pepper and just a tiny bit of sugar.

My favorite is the sriracha. But I put it on everything so I'm not sure if that counts.

I always add some cumin to my hummus. Just a pinch (at least). Also, I sometimes make a 'curry' hummus by adding some curry powder/indian seasonings and tumeric. Its nice when i am serving many kinds of hummus when entertaining.

Other favorites are already on here: Sun dried tomatos, roasted red peppers, roasted garlic, chopped kalamata olives....

I also always make my hummus from cooked dried beans. If you cook them when they are still a little warm, and use some of the cooking water, it can get really creamy without all of the oil you would need with canned beans. (I have a pressure cooker, so it does not take too long if I soak overnight)

Yes, I am kind of a hummus freak.

Curry powder is a great idea...I will have to try that. I also agree about using the cooking water; it makes a big difference in the consistency.
