'Jerry Thomas,' Airport Security Supervisor, Allegedly Used Dead Man's ID

NEWARK, N.J. — A Nigerian man used the identity of the victim in an unsolved murder to hide his status as an illegal immigrant while working undetected for two decades as a security guard and then a security supervisor at one of the United States' busiest airports, authorities said Monday in announcing his arrest.

The arrest of Bimbo Olumuyiwa Oyewole came on the day a federal report found the Transportation Security Administration's handling of security breaches at the airport, Newark Liberty International, deficient. Newark has had a number of high-profile security beaches, the most notorious being the case of a Chinese graduate student who slipped past an exit checkpoint to say goodbye to his girlfriend in 2010, shutting down a terminal and causing huge delays affecting domestic and international traffic.

Oyewole, 54, worked at the airport, starting in 1992, under the name of Jerry Thomas, who was killed that year in New York City. He was arrested, after an anonymous tip, at his home in Elizabeth on Monday and faced charges including identity theft, authorities said. It wasn't immediately known how Thomas' personal information was acquired.

Police in New York didn't say whether Oyewole was a suspect in the July 20, 1992, killing of Thomas in Queens.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the area's main airports and other transit hubs, said Oyewole entered the United States illegally in 1989 and had worked under several contractors at the airport, most recently FJC Security Services, and supervised about 30 guards. The agency said its investigation found no indication that he used the fake identity for any reason other than to live in the United States.

Port Authority leaders had spoken with FJC officials "and will meet with them in the coming days to take every legally permissible step to recheck their security personnel on a regular basis and to protect our customers, employees and facilities," agency spokesman Steve Coleman said.

A message left Monday on Oyewole's home phone was not immediately returned, and no one answered the door at the apartment. The Port Authority said it wasn't sure if he had retained an attorney.

FJC Security, which received an airport contract in 2003, said it conducted a background check on the guard as had New Jersey state police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

"In all cases, he passed the background checks," FJC spokesman Michael McKeon said. "During his time with FJC, he had nothing in his record or his performance to indicate a cause for concern or a reason to question the state police and federal government's background checks."

McKeon said Oyewole, in his position as tour supervisor, didn't have access to employees' personal information.

In a statement, the TSA said it was reviewing the Port Authority's procedures for validating employee and contractor documents.

"This investigation indicates that the individual's identification documents were presented to the Port Authority for verification about a decade before TSA existed," the statement said.

State police spokesman Lt. Stephen Jones said New Jersey requires security guards to undergo training under the Security Officer Registration Act and be fingerprinted. The fingerprints are run through the state police criminal history database before a guard is certified.

A candidate is disqualified if he or she has a conviction for a fourth-degree offense or higher or a drug offense of any level, Jones said. Oyewole, as Thomas, was certified under SORA, he said.

A spokesman for Customs and Border Protection didn't immediately return a message seeking comment Monday.

An airport employee who was familiar with Oyewole as Thomas said the private security guards he supervised are responsible for manning TSA security checkpoints after passenger gates close for the evening and before they reopen in the morning. The guards also inspect delivery vehicles for possible unauthorized cargo, he said, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the matter.

A search of public records found evidence of a Bimbo Oyewole and a Jerry Thomas living at the address where Oyewole was arrested.

A report released Monday by the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General found that only 42 percent of reported security breaches from January 2010 to May 2011 led to corrective action, though it also found TSA had worked to improve its response.

Here’s the rub, the Jerry Thomas fake identity went “undetected” in background checks by FJC Security, New Jersey State Police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection for 20 years. These background checks are usually very thorough and having your background checked by 3 different entities should have revealed some sort of irregularity that would have tripped a red flag, but in this case, didn’t. Which leads me to believe that if the fake Jerry Thomas ID passed the scrutiny of these 3 different agencies, then I would think that there would be other individuals working in areas with high security clearance, that are also working under assumed names and background identities. And, perhaps these others don’t necessarily have to be working exclusively at airports, but may be working at other U.S. Government high security, sensitive and perhaps classified installations. This case may turn out to be an isolated incident of its own kind, but others who commit this type of crime for a reason and specific intention are the most dangerous and may be sitting in key positions in key locations watching this whole incident play out. Hell, for all I know, there might be imposters in charge of running background checks for the different Government Law Enforcement Agencies.

We are definitely in need of a nationwide ID program that prevents this kind of crime. Just think how many crimes this one man could have committed with just one action: murder-theft-illegal status-fraud-perjury- threat to national security...
I vote for a national ID system with fingerprints as the main form of identificaiton.

I live in a south central Tx city and am familiar with how people buy fake ID. Although I personally have never seen any Nigerians at the flea market I sell at, mostly those from Mexico and South and Central America looking for ID. Many times these IDs are stolen and it can really mess up the life of the legal person when someone is using their ID.

"Feinberg said document fraud is an agency priority because it could potentially involve a "national security vulnerability" if someone who is a "high threat" assumes a false identity."

I only found out a few yrs ago about the counterfeit safety inspections and vehicle registrations. We have a huge problem in Tx with people driving without licenses, no safety inspections, no insurance, no vehicle registrations, etc, etc, etc.

Just last week there was a huge accident where a guy was driving an SUV with a woman and her kids and it crashed and the kids were killed. The boyfriend ran off because he didn't have any papers, leaving the Mom on the road with her dead/dying children.

True. But if you've never been arrested & fingerprints aren't on file nothing will come up.

An illegal immigrant who stole a US citizen's ID worked in security at Newark for how long?

Fire everyone involved. Everyone above him. Clean that place out.

In case you haven't been through security in NYC metro area airports, this is not really that much of a shock. Walk into the terminals at JFK and you think you are already in a third world country before you've even left the ground.

It's 2012 and nobody has thought of doing a background search on the security employees ? Wait a min, the guy who has his hands all over you, in every nook and cranny, is using a phony ID and might be suspect in a NYC murder ? Hey, COOOOLLLLLLLL.

Detain him until you find what his motivations are he was there for a reason. I don't buy the standard BS about coming to America looking for a better life either.

It looks as he didn't do any type of crime while here so it seems he really was just coming here to work... Whatya know an actual immigrant that actually did what they came here to do
