Yasuaki Onishi, who is known for his art throughout Japan and internationally, currently has an installation on exhibit in the Rice Gallery in Houston titled, ‘Reverse of Volume RG’. On display until June 24, he uses plastic sheeting and black hot glue to create a monumental, mountainous form that appears to float in space. In using these simple materials, he is able to successfully meditate on the nature of the negative space, or void, left behind.

The process that he calls ‘casting the invisible’ involves draping the plastic sheeting over stacked cardboard boxes, which are then removed to leave only their impressions. Onishi wanted to create an installation that would change as visitors approached and viewed it from outside of the glass wall to inside the gallery space. Seen through the glass, the undulating, exterior surface and dense layers of vertical black strands are primarily visible.

At first glance, standing in the center of the gallery’s foyer, it appears to be a suspended, glowing mass whose exact depth is difficult to perceive. Upon entering the gallery and walking along the left or the right side, the installation transforms into an airy opening that can be entered. Almost like stepping into an inner sanctum or cave-like chamber, the semi-translucent plastic sheeting and wispy strands of hot glue envelop the viewer in a fragile, tent-like enclosure speckled with inky black marks. Visitors can walk in and out of the contemplative space, observing how the simplest qualities of light, shape, and line change.

a puckish satire on contemporary morays. a droll spoof aimed more at the heart than the head. I was never interested.

This is proof-positive that negative space is uplifting. It is not what is there, but what isn't that you may have thought you didn't sense.

That's how I felt when I went to the Grand Canyon for the first time, and every other time!

watching the video, with the lighting changing like that, i couldn't help but to feel as if i were in the middle of a storm...you know...where the rain was black. that is to say, i found it to be interesting and engaging. i think i'll go see it.

As a scientist, I would say God's pretty cool too. But aren't we all? Though I do shy away from religions - they just seem to be hawking politics rather than helping those suffering.

Very interesting. I'd love to see the real thing.
Art like this places me in the briefest of moments in time without predefined meaning or use. It temporarily commandeers my attention allowing me to develop a creative interpretation of the power of the individual vision. Next to our scientific and social accomplishments, art represents humanity's greatest achievements. That may sound silly, but that's what art does to me.

If that floor tile contains asbestos, it could almost be legally removed now. All they need is a decon unit on the opening. I'd rather go outside and look at an actual mountain.

15 minutes of fame - enjoy it, Yasuaki.

There is a calming quality about it. I wish I could see it live. A beautiful piece of work.
