"Casablanca" and Facebook: the beginning of a beautiful friendship? (Couldn't help it.)
To celebrate the 70th anniversary year of "Casablanca" -- and the recent release of a special edition "Casablanca" Blu-ray set -- Warner Bros. Digital Distribution will "screen" the classic Hollywood drama for Facebook users on Wednesday, May 16.
Per the press release, while the screening might not amount to a hill of beans, "movie fans across the United States are invited to microwave some popcorn and gather by the warm glow of the computer monitor to enjoy a complimentary showing this timeless love story at 7 p.m. ET and 7 p.m. PT."
Last March, Warner Bros. made history when it became the first studio to allow digital rentals on Facebook. The first film offered was "The Dark Knight," which Facebook users are able to rent for 30 Facebook credits, or $3 dollars.
"Facebook has become a daily destination for hundreds of millions of people," president of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution Thomas Gewecke said at the time. "Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts. It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world's largest social network."
