PHOTOS, PLAYLIST: Riot Fest Chicago Lineup Unveiled

With the unveiling of the first wave of the eighth annual Riot Fest's 2012 lineup, the Chicago summer festival scene officially welcomes yet another impressive addition to an already packed season.

In years past, Riot Fest has been largely geared toward the punk genre, but in its latest Chicago iteration, to be held Sept. 14-16, festival organizers are pumping up the volume. The lineup is loaded and the event is heading outdoors -- two of the festival's three days will be held in the city's Humboldt Park -- and incorporating carnival-like attractions, like a ferris wheel, food trucks and even tattoo vendors.

The 2012 lineup in Chicago, announced Tuesday, includes headliners Rise Against, The Offspring, Iggy and the Stooges and Elvis Costello, in addition to a number of other acts including a number with strong local ties, such as Alkaline Trio, Deal's Gone Bad and White Mystery. Additional acts will be announced next month.

In a statement, Riot Fest promoter Michael Petryshyn -- who founded the festival with Sean McKeough -- said that a trial run of an outdoor version of his event in Philadelphia proved that the 2012 event in Chicago should go aire fresco as well.

Tickets for the festival are also a bargain: Just $90 for a three-day pass, which includes entry to two days of festivities on the Humboldt Park grounds plus admission to the Congress Theater on Sept. 14. For a limited time, two-day, Sept. 15-16 passes are available for a $36 early-bird special.
