CBGB Reemerges: Plans Music Festival, New Venue, Biopic Starring Alan Rickman

In 2006 one of the most renowned music venues in the country shut its doors.

But now it looks like CBGB -- the venerable East Village hard rock institution founded in 1973 that launched acts like Patti Smith, Blondie, the Ramones and the Misfits -- is making a physical comeback. And not just on t-shirts.

The club originally shuttered due to rent disputes with their landlord, after their rent was raised from $19,000 a month to $35,000 a month.

Last week the club's newest investors -- an unnamed group of six who have acquired the rights to the club's intellectual property and assets from the previous owners --announced they are on the lookout for a new venue somewhere in downtown Manhattan. Original founder Hilly Kristal's daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman, told the New York Times she was relieved to know the club could be "reborn" and that "it's not going to die."

This news came on the heels of an announcement that CBGB would be hosting their first rock festival -- a three day spurt from July 5-8 featuring hundreds of indie bands playing a variety of venues across New York.

And now -- howabout this? -- The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Alan Rickman will play CBGB founder Hilly Kristal in a biopic about the origins of the club. Randall Miller, who also directed Rickman in "Bottle Shock," co-wrote the script and will direct the film.

Is punk dead? Or does it live on in the spirits of these mysterious investors and Severus Snape? Let us know what you think.

The important question to me is what/who will play there? Probably overpriced reunions for the most part.

Just another example of pop culture nostalgia.

CBGBs was really tiny, and completely filthy, especially the bathroom. Thousands of bands, most of them completely unknown now except to their members, rocked in that place. But it was deservedly legend. Now that the Mars Bar, the Lakeside Lounge, and even the Hotel Chelsea have closed, there is not even a ghost of that great period in rock left. If the new CBGBs is run down and covered with bad graffiti, they serve 2 dollar 16 oz, pounders, the bathroom smells like roadkill, every night is all ages, you can smoke, and cover charges never exceed 10 dollars, then there might be hope that they can recover some of that old magic. But what is the chance of that happening?

People buy CBGB shirts at Target now. Once I asked said wearer of one CBGB shirt (at a bar) If he had been to it before the closing. He didn't know what CBGB was.....

American music needs a new life. Rap has been corporate pablum for two generations and Rock seems to have died with the Grunge generation.

Today's young people are so boring and healthy. And their club scene is the same.

As a San Francisco punker who spent years at the CW Saloon and other sundry dive clubs I can only hope that some edge will be brought back to the music scene.

But it seems sex and drugs and rock and roll doesn't sell to the iPod Yoga material gadget generation. A little rebellion is good for you! You all ought to try it some time.

Punk will never die!!! Investors and hipsters will try to ruin it from time to time and try to ride the wave but we eventually shake em off and run em out of town. There will always be an underground punk scene, always!

2 things...

1. The article doesn't mention. CBGB was the first gig for the TALKING HEADS! They opened for the Ramones in '75.
2. Of course it wont be the same..... Nothing ever is.

Anyone who knows anything about CBGB's should be well aware of all the trivial details. This article is about it reopening, not about Talking Heads or The Ramones.

Trivial details? Are you joking. Music history was made there. The new owners are capitalizing on the name, nothing more.
03:47 PM on 05/16/2012
I meant in the sense of "trivia," not that it was insignificant. Poor usage lol. Still doesn't relate to the article one bit. Just because David Byrne's 60th was the other day doesn't mean that HuffPo has to do an obligatory shoutout.

If it's not in the original location on The Bowery, then it can never be the same.

There's only ONE CBGBs as we've always known it.
10:20 AM on 05/16/2012
Yeah if they put it in Midtown or Chelsea they may as well just not do it. Just go get more shows at Duffs if that's what they plan on doing.

They tried to move the Peppermint Lounge too...didn't work. Though even back then nobody would have had the hubris to close it for however many years and then try to salvage the brand name. Why stop at CBs? Why not open Mudd Club and Danceteria side by side in some Rockefeller Center basement concourse storefronts? I mean how many more "luxury" gift shops does Manhattan need?

They'll make it into a Hard Rock Cafe Nonsense Destination. They shouldn't degrade the namesake.
