PORT ST. JOHN, Fla. — A Florida mother who fatally shot her four children before killing herself Tuesday called three of the kids who had sought help from a neighbor back to the house before firing the fatal shots, authorities said.

Tonya Thomas, 33, fatally shot her four children, who ranged in age from 12 to 17, said Lt. Tod Goodyear, a spokesman for the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

Three of the children had gone to a neighbor's front door before dawn to say their mother had shot them. The mother then called the children back to the house and killed them, Goodyear said.

"From what the neighbors said, she was very calm. She walked out and called them back. They turned around and walked back to the house," Goodyear said.

The neighbor then heard gunshots and called 911.

Another neighbor told deputies that Thomas sent a text message in the middle of the night saying she wanted to be cremated with her children.

"He didn't see the text until he woke up this morning," Goodyear said.

Deputies identified the children as Pebbles Johnson, 17; Jaxs Johnson, 15; Jazzlyn Johnson, 13; and Joel Johnson, 12.

The shooting happened in Port St. John, about 15 miles west of Cape Canaveral in an area known as the "Space Coast" because it is the home of NASA's Kennedy Space Center, the location of numerous famed shuttle launches.

A spokesman for the Department of Children and Families wouldn't immediately comment on whether the family had a history with the agency.

Dispatch records released Tuesday show that authorities responded to Thomas' house on three successive days in April.

In the first visit, on Easter Sunday, Thomas reported that her son had thrown a bicycle through a window at the house. The next day, Thomas called to report that her son had kicked and punched her when she tried to wake him up for school. The following day, child welfare investigators visited the house to look into allegations of inadequate supervision of the children.

Records also showed that Thomas was arrested in 2002 on a misdemeanor battery charge for striking the father of her children. The charge was later dropped. Two years earlier, she filed a domestic violence complaint against Joe Johnson, but that was dismissed after a hearing.

Jamie Hudson, whose mother lives two doors down from the family, said the boys in the family were known to shoot BBs at a home across the street and had threatened to set it on fire.

"It has been an ongoing problem on our street with them," Hudson said.

Goodyear said Jaxs Johnson had recently been arrested on a domestic violence charge. He said he didn't know if the boy had been accused of hitting his mother or causing damage at the house.

Austin Lewis, a 16-year-old classmate of Pebbles Johnson, said the family "had problems like everybody else but nothing that drastic."

He described Pebbles Johnson as "very loving and caring."

"Always with a smile," Lewis said. "Didn't let anything affect her. She was always in a good mood."

A pastor at the church the family attended described it as "normal stuff."

"I think he was punching some walls or something," said Jarvis Wash, pastor of the Real Church in Rockledge, Fla.

Wash said the family attended services last Sunday but had been absent for a few weeks before that.

"I don't know what could have happened in the past couple of days," Wash said. "It's a tragedy to the church and the community."

R.I.P. to the 4-kid's that lost their life after reading this story i am sad at the fact that 3 of the kid's made it to a neighbors house and they still ended up loseing their life.I'm just trying to understand how someone could have let those kid's go back into that house after the kid's told them they had been shot. These kid's could have been saved but i know they are in God's hands now.

God help the neighbor....she could have saved them all and she turned them away. I personally couldn't live with that.

Interesting that someone said there was virtually no crime there yet the one family that was black caused this. Too bad there weren't more of the same to be disposed of here,

What's "interesting" is that a someone with a 2nd-grade education has access to the internet.

I live less than a mile from where this happened. For the record, the neighbor was on the phone with 911 when the mother called the kids back over. He did not say the kids could not come in. He thought the shooter was trying to come in. When he realized the kids were not the ones shooting and they were injured he was trying to help them. You have to realize this happened at 5 in the morning. He was woken up by gunshots and someone banging on his door. And the mother did not say come home I won't shoot you anymore. She simply told them to come home. From what the neighbor said, the kids were really confused at that time about who shot them. And for people implying this happened because of where the mother and children lived, piss off. This is a very nice quiet community. Crime is rare here. Also for the people saying it seems like there's a lot of domestic violence going on in the family, yes there were a few incidents but nothing major. The parents were together up until a few months ago. The separation was probably a big factor in the bad behavior of Jaxs. Grow up people. Stop JUDGING and just start praying for these poor children that lost their lives and for their father who has to try and find a way to live without them.

What a shame.

The mother was 15 when she had her first child, then another every ~2 years until she had 4. Children's father never married mother, and was in prison for drugs.

Being a parent, if done well, is the hardest job most people will ever undertake. When it is entered into in such a cavalier and irresponsible manner, bad things can happen. That this type of parenting is culturally acceptable is a sad commentary on that culture, and on the political powers that gave it rise.

Do you mean those white Americans who murder their children? Like Damion Morine, Andrea Yates, Casey Anthony, Susan Smith, Jerry William Jones, Caro Socorro, Josh Powell, Dena Schlosser, Deanna Laney, Christina Marie Riggs, Julie Powers Schenecker?

It is tragic what happened to these children and whatever mental problems the mother must have been suffering to be able to ever do anything like this. But the children's treatment by the "neighbors" was no better. To tell a terrified, bleeding, dying child, "No!, Your're not coming in here" and just let them die on your porch and in your front yard . . . Wow, I don't know the last time I have ever heard of anything so dirty and so hateful. Between what the mother did and how the "neighbors" treated these children under the circumstances, and the fact that we read about things like this (people killing their own children, gun violence, domestic violence) on a regular basis, there are too many Americans now that need to look in the mirror and try to assess or reassess their humanity.

For Florida to be dubbed "the happiest place on Earth ..." children sure are not safe from their parents. Jeez!! Maybe it's all that heat and humidity ... but I swear, I could not imagine killing my own children.

Mother knows best or what? It seems that the family was deep into domestic violence of some form or another and this end seemed inevitable.

Its shows how critical is human life when a mother who gave birth to childs shot them by her own hands, humanity is defeated and will be again again in future yes Tommorow we disappear!!

O.K. So, here's what I don't get...the kids escaped to the neighbors house because their mother SHOT THEM...hum...why in the world would any intelligent teenager GO BACK to her when she was telling them to come home???????? And, as for the neighbor, hum...why not call 911 and baracade them into the house with you? They let these dumb, scared, kids go back into harms way because their insane mother said ,sweetly, "Come home kids, I won't shoot you anymore....."
Such a needless tragedy...Even though some have speculated that the mother must have been coping with the pressures of raising her teens alone by boozing, or taking drugs, it may also be something less obvious. Some people who go to their doctor and complain of depression, are prescribed an anti-depressant, like Zoloft, or Paxcil.....these drugs come with a black box warning on them, as they can trigger suicides and homicides in certain people, especially if the person has undiagnosed bi-polar illness. (It can set off a manic incident)

After the way they were treated by these evil hateful neighbors, they probably felt they had no other choice. Did you read what the "neighbor" said to the terrified, bleeding, dying child, and her husband was walking around "outside" with a gun? These "neighbors" were not afraid, they were just evil.

You are right about anti-depressants (and anti-psychotics). Too many people are prescribed these drugs when they really don't need them and people that do need them are prescribed this medication with little or no supervision. Too many are prescribed these medications on an out-patient basis without ever being evaluated by a psychologist, and mental health facilities are prescribing psychotropic drugs to patients and not keeping them in a mental health facility long enough for them or the patient's system to acclimate/adjust to the medication, and too many doctors, etc., downplay the worse-case-scenario side affects of these drugs or don't tell the patient what to do or how to handle any extreme side affects. Doctors and psychologists, counselors, downplay the possibility that the drugs can make a person even more psychotic, or depressed, or suicidal or that they could induce a homicidal mentality in some people.

There's ALOT of money to be made by pushing these drugs...billions...whistle blowers can be bought off, or silenced with enough $$$..it's sad...

Hope the poor children RIP, so sorry for the rest of the family left behind, to mourn. To the gun haters: She would have killed them any way she could, it's just a tool like everything else at hand.

Wow, I am surprised again! I have not been that surprised since I found out who the D.C. sniper was! Sad situation! I just wish these so called parents would stop killing their kids! If you have a death wish then leave the kids out of it! So many people in the world wish they could have children, and you have people who have them and do things like this... so sad...

For those desperate enough to seriously consider taking their own lives it's a short leap to
thinking they are protecting their kids by 'taking ' them out of this cruel world. My heart goes out to all of those involved.

Just stating my surprise is all...we all know that this is not a usual for black people or African Americans or anyone of color for that matter just like like no one assumed the DC sniper was a man of color...was not being racist at all...
