John Edwards Trial: Defense Continues To Refute Charges

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The John Edwards corruption trial appears to be winding down without testimony, so far, from the former presidential candidate or his one-time mistress.

Defense lawyer Abbe Lowell has said the defense still could close out its case Wednesday by calling Edwards, his oldest daughter Cate and Rielle Hunter, the woman with whom he had an extramarital affair while running for president in 2008.

They also could recall Edwards' former aide Andrew Young.

Edwards is charged with masterminding a plan to use about $1 million from two wealthy donors to hide his pregnant mistress as he ran for the White House.

He has pleaded not guilty to six criminal counts including conspiracy to violate the Federal Election Campaign Act, accepting contributions that exceeded federal limits, and filing false campaign-finance statements.

Will someone please help me understand. Was there not a limit on campaign cotributions,by individuals ? and if that is correct , why was the lady not charged also, could it be that she would have told them to to f... themselves its her money and she can gift it to anybody she pleases. where was there any testimony that it was campaign money , any whatsoever, the man who gave money to hide the mistress , was he not the one hiding, her moving he arround so she would not be found , so how can his money be campaign money?

I'm a die hard Republican and generally despise people who have made a living from personal injury lawsuits. So, I've never been a fan of Edwards. However, being a bad husband doesn't make the guy a criminal. The public opinion should not be a factor in the outcome of his trial.

I think it would be cruel to put Cate on the stand. It would be for sympathy only. What could she possibly have to offer in testimony. Surely JE did not confide in her about hiding his mistress and the lengths he would go to.
