Obama Assets Valued Between $2.6M And $8.3M

By KEN THOMAS 05/16/12 12:14 AM ET AP

Barack Obama

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama hold assets worth between nearly $2.6 million and nearly $8.3 million, according to financial disclosure reports released Tuesday by the White House.

The documents show the couple's assets for last year. The first family's assets were valued between $1.8 million and nearly $12 million in 2010.

Obama released the annual report in the middle of a presidential campaign that has brought attention to the wealth of his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney. The former Massachusetts governor is worth $190 million to $250 million, with much of his money coming from investments.

Romney has amended his 2010 financial disclosures during this primary season, and also caved in to pressure to release his tax returns. The returns showed a series of offshore holdings that weren't in the former Massachusetts governor's 2010 financial disclosure, including a Swiss bank account that has received criticism from the Obama campaign.

Obama's disclosure forms show he holds between $500,000 and $1 million in a JPMorgan Chase checking account. The Wall Street firm has faced scrutiny this week after it reported losing more than $2 billion on bad trading bets, prompting renewed calls for more stringent oversight of the nation's top financial institutions.

Obama said Monday that JPMorgan Chase's loss showed the need for Wall Street rules passed by Congress two years ago, many of which are still being written and have not yet gone into effect. He said in an interview with ABC's "The View" that JPMorgan is "one of the best managed banks there is" and CEO Jamie Dimon is "one of the smartest bankers," but even the best-run banks can make mistakes, underscoring the importance of the regulations.

The disclosure form requires public officials to list their assets in broad ranges, for example, between $1 million and $5 million, making it difficult to determine a precise net worth.

The president and first lady's asset mix includes Treasury notes valued at between $1 million and $5 million, Treasury bills worth $500,000 and $1 million, along with retirement and checking accounts.

Royalties from Obama's books, "Dreams From My Father," `'The Audacity of Hope" and "Of Thee I Sing," totaled between $250,000 and $2.1 million.

The Obamas have a 30-year mortgage on their Chicago home worth between $500,000 and $1 million with an interest rate of 5.625 percent.

Vice President Joe Biden listed assets of between nearly $230,000 to $860,000, many of them in investment accounts and insurance policies. The vice president disclosed in his 2011 tax returns receiving $20,900 in rental income on a guest house in Wilmington, Del.

Biden also disclosed receiving an $800 Vulcain Cricket watch as a gift from a Helsinki, Finland, jewelry store owner who has given watches in the past to U.S. presidents who have visited Finland.

To the moderators: Why are you allowing this flood of lies and propaganda from conservatives while censoring so many posts from liberals for no apparent reason? HP is going downhill fast. The success of HP is based on the fact that it has always catered to liberals, or, reality based people. One of the few portals for mainstream news that still does.

lol...just about every media outlet caters to liberal bias. Fact. It's also not reality based people...more like selective moralists.

If your measure is Fox News and Hotair.com which is nothing but propaganda catering to the uneducated, bigot Republican base.

In your own mind maybe people believe it. Free speach still legal in this country. And why should they catered to liberals. Liberals only want the free sandwich, and will vote for anyone who will not take that away. And maybe hp sees through the liberals BS. Reality based people like SURVIVOR, Reality is TV shows for your entertainment. Get a grip the world does not revolve around LIBS, nor you.

I can't see myself voting for a rich Ivy leaguer that had a silver spoon upbringing.
12:19 PM on 05/18/2012
Talking about JFK? Is it the Ivy league part or the silver spoon part? Both Obama and Romney are Ivy League guys. Both are millionaires. Did you know that Romney donated all his inheritance to charity? So all his wealth, is from his own hard work.

No all of his wealth is not from his hard work. His inheritence when his father died in 1995 was $1 million, that's a drop on the bucked for Mitt now and was then. His inheritance from his father's passing was not the only wealth that was ever given from father to son so you cannot say that all of his wealth is a result of his own work simply because he gave a million bucks to BYU in 1995.

That is only a half truth. Romney donated a sum of his inheritance to the University. The "amount" of his inheritance was never told to anyone. And his wealth comes from the connections his father had created. Plus, he also received a high monthly aloowance so that he nor Annwould have to work while going to college. And before he married Annthat allowance was sufficient to pay for numerous trips back and forth to see her via air travel. His father then gave him a car and their first home. PolitiFact.

Only fools ever thought that Obama was for the little guy! He's always tried to be a rock star, and where do you think he spends most of his time? In the homes of mega wealthy, lavish living billionaire hedge fund guys, Wall Street moguls, and Hollywood people. Most people in this country sure have been "dumbed down".

I'm not a fool and I sill think he cares a great deal about the little guy. He doesn't spend most of his time in the homes of mega wealty, lavish living billionare hedge fund guys, Wall Street moguls and Hollywood people. He does that when he needs to raise money to win an election to defeat an opponent who would do the exact same thing given the chance and who would lead America into a worse state than it is now if elected. Who has been dumbed down is you if you thought you could just vomit words from your brain without thinking about their meaning when put together as an entire statement and what that statement implies. You're statement is factually incorrect and misleading at best whereas the one I will be soon to make is demonstrably accurate. Mitt Romney spends considerably more time in the homes of of mega wealthy, lavish living billionaire hedge fund guys than Barack Obama ever has. Please explain how you honestly thought what you said was going to make sense when given anything more than a cursory glance?

Another proof that Obama is a typical Hypocrite.

He is a 1% who is lying to the American people about helping them.

To Obama words are cheap and he does not have the back bone to stand up to his word.
Only results matter and Obama has Failed the Middleclass. But he keeps on saying he is for the middleclass to get their votes. Obama is just an elitist socialist. The bad part is many people still believe in him even after 3.5 years of disaster

If he truly believes the rich people should pay more he should lead by example and send the government 35% of his earning, but no he took all the tax breaks he could.

If he was for the middleclass people then he should not have made fun of the fact that he had to admit there were no shovel ready jobs and then joke about it. There where million of Americans who depended on Obama improving this economy and he has failed.

How? By higher unemployment, not 1 new "net gain" job created, loss of our AAA Credit Rating, by higher food, fuel, gasoline, and clothing prices? Or is it by adding over $5 TRILLION to the National Debt? Don't forget, that the Democrats also controlled both Houses of Congress for the last two Bush years! Prior to that the Bush Administration saw record LOW unemployment and an unprecedented 52 consecutive months of economic growth!

For all of you who like to point out that Mitt Romney has much more wealth than Obama, remember this. Bill and Hillary Clinton were said to be on the brink of bankruptcy at the end of Bill's second term. However, within a few short years of leaving the White House, the Clintons have been able to amass a fortune estimated to be more than 200 million dollars. Book deals, speaking fees, and who knows what else. Don't kid yourself---Obama may have only 5-8 million now, but after his presidency is behind him, the Obamas will cash in and I am very certain will easily pass Mitt Romney in overall worth. And that is there business. Mark my words.

Very true, Obama is still a millionaire and if millionaires or rich people only have their own self interest at heart, than what's Obama going to do next? Well, what ever it is, you can bet your butt it's not going to be for the people.

So prevent former presidents from having a life?
11:19 AM on 05/17/2012
I did not say that. Quite the opposite actually. If you care to review what I have written, I said "And that is their business". Go for it folks. It's always a mad scramble for the big bucks by those who have served the public.
09:12 AM on 05/17/2012
First giving to charity is a personal matter. However a Google study found conservatives give almost twice as much to charity as liberals do. There is no question that Americans who believe in self-reliance are more generous to those in need than folks who espouse a federal nanny state. The importance of this data cannot be underestimated because millions of Americans are now locked into a mindset that the feds will take care of the poor and the sick. And that they themselves don't have to do anything.
10:45 AM on 05/17/2012
Given that your assumption is correct, your conclusion does not automatically flow from your premise. Have you considered that your facts reflect not a generous heart, but rather the wealthy able to donate a disproportionate amount because they hold a disproportionate amount of our nation's wealth? Also, charitable donations also provide tax credits...

When, oh when, will we ever get to see Romney's tax returns. Amended or not. He promised that he would release them.

We probably never will see them, as his tax men are trying to amend to make them look better.

Once again, this guy lies.

Having been in Florida, Dec - through May, I can tell you that we ain't seen nothing yet in negative advertising. Every 15 minutes there was a negative ad ran by Romney against Newt and towards the end geared toward Santorum.

In all my years, never saw anything like it. So I can guarantee you it is going to get bad. The only people in the US making money are the people to make the ads. They are busy day and night.

If you resent Obama for having this amount of money, then you have to resent Romney ten fold more.....for me, I don't resent anyone their money... If someone has sold a product that lots of people have happily bought... Good for them! If someone has performed a service to people that has helped them and they got paid... Good for them! It seems some of these people posting are wishing they were rich and at the same time bashing anyone with money.

It's not the money you have that counts, it's what you did to get it, and what you are doing with it now, and whether you are paying your fair share. Obama would like to pay more taxes... The other: not so much
10:08 AM on 05/17/2012
I don't think anyone resents Obama or Romney for their wealth. Obama's wealth comes from government or taxpayers in his salary and sales from books he wrote. Romney's comes from consulting businesses on how to prosper and venture capitol given to businesses to help them grow and become stronger making them great assets to society, and the market creating jobs and products for consumers. Romney has a 78% success rate. That is remarkable when the companies you are investing in are failing and you are there to restructure them to make them a success. Not many people have the expertise to have such a successful record. Think how many companies would have been left to fail without Romney's bet and belief that they could be helped and his ability to help them. Let me also point out that when Romney worked as a consultant he paid high income tax rates on the salaries he made. The money he makes today is on investments made from savings from his salaries. If those investments have a return he pays additional taxes on those returns at a lower rate. If those investments fail he loses that money he invested. I think Romney would be a much better asset to the people and a better manager over government then Obama because of his experience and success in business.

Your information about Romney is misleading. He has a 78% success rate doing what, specifically? It wasn't creating jobs because that wasn't his job and wasn't the measure of success he was striving for. Did you miss the recent report that out of the jobs created by Romney at Bain were low paying jobs, hardly worth touting to the extent at which you seem to be touting them. I think your understanding about what exactly Romney did at Bain is slightly off. His job wasn't to "save" companies or jobs or any such altruistic endeavor, it was to make a profit for his investors. If that required "saving" a company and its employees then the company was saved but if that required liquidation of a company then that company and ther jobs, ceased to be. Success in business is not any indicator of future success at running a country. You're inserting some moral value into what Romney did at Bain where there is none to be found. That's not say what he did was evil either; it was neutral, he did it because it was his job not because of some greater desire to make the world better or to help anyone other than himself and his company.
